Neurological soft signs and olfactory dysfunction in patients with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2.7-5.9% and is thought to correlate with altered neuroplasticity. The aim of the present study is to investigate possible associations of BPD (-severity) and alterations in neurological soft signs (NSS) and olfactory function. METHODS: For the monocentric observational study, 39 female subjects with a BPD diagnosis and 19 female healthy control subjects were recruited. The groups were matched by age. Olfactory functions were examined using Sniffin' Sticks. NSS were assessed by a standardized

The status of MRI databases across the world focused on psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Neuroimaging databases for neuro-psychiatric disorders enable researchers to implement data-driven research approaches by providing access to rich data that can be used to study disease, build and validate machine learning models, and even redefine disease spectra. The importance of sharing large, multi-center, multi-disorder databases has gradually been recognized in order to truly translate brain imaging knowledge into real-world clinical practice. Here, we review MRI databases that share data globally to serve multiple psychiatric or neurological disorders. We found 42 datasets consisting o

Neuro-regeneration or Repair: Cell Therapy of Neurological Disorders as A Way Forward.

The human central nervous system (CNS) has a limited capacity for regeneration and repair, as many other organs do. Partly as a result, neurological diseases are the leading cause of medical burden globally. Most neurological disorders cannot be cured, and primary treatments focus on managing their symptoms and slowing down their progression. Cell therapy for neurological disorders offers several therapeutic potentials and provides hope for many patients. Here we provide a general overview of cell therapy in neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Alzheimer's disease (AD), amy

Neurological and orbital complication of acute sinusitis in pediatric patient: A case report.

Sinusitis is a common condition that can lead to various neurological complications due to the spread of infection to the intracranial and orbital regions. Fortunately, the availability of antibiotics has significantly improved the prognosis of sinusitis-associated intracranial complications. As a result, the overall incidence of neurological complications arising from sinusitis remains low. We present a rare case of a 13-year-old male who developed epidural empyema and orbital cellulitis as a complication of acute sinusitis. The patient initially exhibited signs and symptoms of orbital cellul

Increased frequency and mortality in persons with neurological disorders during COVID-19.

Determining the frequency and outcomes of neurological disorders associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is imperative for understanding risks and for recognition of emerging neurological disorders. We investigated the susceptibility and impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among persons with premorbid neurological disorders, in addition to the post-infection incidence of neurological sequelae, in a case-control population-based cohort. Using health service data collected between 1 March 2020 and 30 June 2021, we constructed a cohort of S

Long term functioning with poor neurologic outcome after cardiac arrest.

AIM: Around six percent of comatose patients after cardiac arrest have a Cerebral Performance Categories score of three (CPC3) at six months after the arrest, classified as severe neurological disability. There is limited knowledge regarding the likelihood of further recovery in the cognitive, emotional, and quality of life domains. We aimed to estimate the probability of recovery towards independency. METHODS: From a prospective Registry on comatose cardiac arrest patients admitted between 2013 and 2017 in two Dutch hospitals, we included patients with a CPC3 at six months after cardiac arre

Drug protection against radiation-induced neurological injury: mechanisms and developments.

In daily life, individuals are frequently exposed to various forms of radiation, which, when adhering to safety standards, typically result in relatively minor health effects. However, accidental exposure to radiation levels that exceed these safety standards can lead to significant health consequences. This study focuses on the analysis of radiation-induced damage to the nervous system and the mechanisms of pharmacological protection. The findings indicate that radiation can adversely affect neural structures, memory, and neurobehaviour. A range of pharmacological agents, including traditiona

Brain death/death by neurologic criteria: What you need to know.

Since the beginning of time, man has been intrigued with the question of when a person is considered dead. Traditionally, death has been considered the cessation of all cardiorespiratory function. At the end of the last century a new definition was introduced into the lexicon surrounding death in addition to cessation of cardiac and respiratory function: Brain Death/Death by Neurologic Criteria (BD/DNC). There are medical, legal, ethical, and even theological controversies that surround this diagnosis. In addition, there is no small amount of confusion among medical practitioners regarding the

Neurological manifestations of ehrlichiosis among a cohort of patients: prevalence and clinical symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichiosis is a potentially fatal tick-borne disease that can progress to involve the central nervous system (CNS) (i.e., neuro-ehrlichiosis), particularly in cases where diagnosis and treatment are delayed. Despite a six-fold national increase in the incidence of ehrlichiosis over the past 20 years, recent data on the prevalence and manifestations of neuro-ehrlichiosis are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of all patients tested for ehrlichiosis at University of North Carolina Health facilities between 2018 and 2021 and identified patients who met epid

Multiple dimensions of neurological injury in a liver transplant recipient with cryptococcal meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Meningitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality in victims of this infection. Worldwide, immunosuppression due to uncontrolled HIV disease is the main risk factor. In the United States, however, a substantial percentage of cryptococcal meningitis cases occur in people with non-HIV immune compromising conditions such as solid organ transplantation. Neurological damage in cryptococcal meningitis can be caused by direct fungal-induced injury, as a consequence of elevated intracranial pressure, and by immune-mediated injury. An understan

Functional Neurological Disorder Presenting After Concussion: A Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: Although a majority of individuals recover from a concussion within weeks of the index injury, a substantial minority of patients report persistent postconcussion symptoms. Some of these symptoms may reflect a diagnosis of functional neurological disorder (FND). The authors evaluated the relationship between persistent postconcussion symptoms and FND symptoms. METHODS: In this retrospective chart review, the authors characterized demographic and clinical information from 50 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of FND whose functional neurological symptoms started after a concussion.

Biallelic NDUFA13 variants lead to a neurodevelopmental phenotype with gradual neurological impairment.

Biallelic variants in NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) + hydrogen (H))-ubiquinone oxidoreductase 1 alpha subcomplex 13 have been linked to mitochondrial complex I deficiency, nuclear type 28, based on three affected individuals from two families. With only two families reported, the clinical and molecular spectrum of NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase 1 alpha subcomplex 13-related diseases remains unclear. We report 10 additional affected individuals from nine independent families, identifying four missense variants (including recurrent c.170G > A) and three ultra-rare or novel predic
