High-performance bioelectronic tongue for the simultaneous analysis of phenols, sugars and organic acids in wines.

BACKGROUND: Electronic tongues have been widely used to analyze wines. However, owing to the complexity of the matrix, the problem is not completely solved and further improvements are required. RESULTS: A high-performance potentiometric bioelectronic tongue (bio-ET) specifically devoted to the assessment of wine components is presented. The novelty of this system is due to two innovative approaches. First, the improved performance is obtained through the use of potentiometric biosensors based on carboxylated polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes, where enzymes (glucose oxidase, tyrosinase, lacc

Endoscopic Sphenopalatine Artery Cauterization in the Management of Recurrent Posterior Epistaxis.

Background and Objectives: Endoscopic sphenopalatine artery cauterization (ESPAC) has become a reliable and effective surgical procedure for managing posterior epistaxis. The objectives of our study were to evaluate the effectiveness of ESPAC in the management of posterior epistaxis and the possible factors that lead to the failure of the procedure. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients who underwent ESPAC between 2018 and 2022. We retrospectively reviewed the demographic data, patients' co-morbidities, medical treatment conditions, whether other surgical

Lip-Shortening Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Many changes are associated with the aging face. Upper lip lengthening with atrophy, lip thinning, and diminution of the lip margin are commonly seen. METHODS: Lip-shortening surgery over a 32-year period by a single surgeon is reviewed. A direct surgical excision of the upper lip skin at the base of the nose with an irregular or curvilinear incision was used. RESULTS: Facial aesthetics were improved with this direct surgical approach. A more youthful vermilion border and an increased lip projection were achieved. Lip asymmetry and an improvement in lip dynamics were also observe…

Lateral Transorbital Approach for Repair of Lateral Sphenoid Sinus Meningoencephaloceles in Proximity to Foramen Rotundum: Cadaveric Study and Case Report.

BACKGROUND: The repair of lateral sphenoid sinus cerebrospinal fluid leaks is routinely accomplished through the use of the endonasal endoscopic approach (EEA) with a transpterygoidal extension. This approach can incur sinus morbidity, damage to the vidian, palatine and trigeminal nerves, and the contents of the pterygopalatine fossa, particularly if the encephalocele is lateral to the foramen rotundum (FR) and V2. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of the lateral transorbital approach (LTOA) as an alternative approach for repair of lateral sphenoid sinus encephaloceles that avoids the potenti

Habitat partitioning, co-occurrence patterns, and mixed-species group formation in sympatric delphinids.

Numerous species have been reported to form mixed-species groups, however, little is known about the interplay between niche partitioning and mixed-species group formation. Furthermore, it is often unclear whether species come together by chance due to overlapping habitat preferences, by shared attraction to resources, or by attraction between them. We assessed habitat partitioning, co-occurrence patterns, and mixed-species group formation of sympatric Australian humpback (Sousa sahulensis) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) around the North West Cape, Western Australia, w…

How Does Climate Change Affect the Upper Airway?

There is mounting evidence that climate change is having a significant influence on exacerbations of airway disease. We herein explore the physical factors of carbon dioxide, temperature increases, and humidity on intensifying allergen and fungal growth, and worsening air quality. The direct influence of these factors on promoting allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, and allergic fungal rhinosinusitis is reviewed.

Rhinological procedures result in minimal generation of aerosols.

In contrast to other chromatographic methods for purifying proteins (e.g. gel filtration, affinity, and ion exchange), hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) commonly requires experimental determination (referred to as screening or "scouting") in order to select the most suitable chromatographic medium for purifying a given protein (1). The method presented here describes an automated approach to scouting for an optimal HIC media to be used in protein purification. HIC separates proteins and other biomolecules from a crude lysate based on differences in hydrophobicity. Similar to affinit

Anatomical determinants of upper airway collapsibility in obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Upper airway (UA) collapsibility is one of the key factors that determine the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Interventions for OSA are aimed at reducing UA collapsibility, but selecting the optimal alternative intervention for patients who fail CPAP is challenging because currently no validated method predicts how anatomical changes affect UA collapsibility. The gold standard objective measure of UA collapsibility is the pharyngeal critical pressure (Pcrit). A systematic literature review and meta-analysis were performed to identify the anatomical factors with the strongest correla

Rhinoplasty as an Adjunct to Orthognathic Surgery:: A Review.

Orthognathic surgery is a well-recognized method to correct dentofacial deformities. The main goal of orthognathic surgery is to improve soft tissue change. Soft tissue changes to the nose have been well documented. Simultaneous rhinoplasty during orthognathic surgery can be performed to correct existing inherent nasal deformities and also the unfavorable changes that arose from the maxillary surgery. Challenges for concurrent nasal surgery with jaw surgery include preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative which can be overcome with meticulous planning and experience. In complex cases, rh…

Anatomical, histochemical and surface ultrastructural characteristics of cavum nasi of the common quails (Coturnix coturnix. Erlangeri).

Ten normal, mature and common quails were used to study in detail the gross anatomy, histochemical and surface ultrastructural characteristics of the nasal cavity. The relationship between the structure and function of the nasal cavity also were assessed. The quail nasal cavity was divided into the vestibule, nasal cavity proper and fundus. The nasal cavity began rostrally by two slit-like external nares located laterally in the middle third of the upper beak. A previous authors stated that no rostral concha but the current study record that the rostral nasal concha was located opposite the no

Comparison of rhinomanometric and computational fluid dynamic assessment of nasal resistance with respect to measurement accuracy.

PURPOSE: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based calculation of intranasal airflow became an important method in rhinologic research. Current evidence shows weak to moderate correlation as well as a systematic underprediction of nasal resistance by numerical simulations. In this study, we investigate whether these differences can be explained by measurement uncertainties caused by rhinomanometric devices and procedures. Furthermore, preliminary findings regarding the impact of tissue movements are reported. METHODS: A retrospective sample of 17 patients, who reported impaired nasal breathing

Prolactinoma: Medical and Surgical Considerations.

Prolactinomas are the most common secretory tumor of the pituitary gland. Clinical symptoms may be due to prolactin oversecretion, localized mass effect, or a combination of both. Although the mainstay of prolactinoma management is medical therapy with dopamine agonists, endoscopic endonasal or transcranial surgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of these is an important treatment option in select cases. This article discusses prolactinoma phenotypes, clinical presentations, and clinically pertinent medical and surgical considerations when managing these tumors.

Using a V-Y Advance Flap for Alar Rim Defect After Human Bite: A Case Report.

A human bite is a traumatic injury that often occurs in the recipient's nasal area. In this report, we describe the case of a 38-year-old man who was bitten by his roommate and sustained an alar rim defect. After reviewing the literature and professional recommendations for managing human bite wounds in the nasal area, we found both were unclear as to whether it is best to implement primary reconstruction or to defer reconstruction to a later date. We utilized a V-Y flap for secondary reconstruction in our patient.

Effects of different monochromatic lights on umami and aroma of dried Suillus granulatus.

Dried edible mushrooms have a unique flavor which is worth exploring to preserve and improve their flavor.Light can improve flavor for dried edible mushrooms, but there are few reports about monochromatic light. In this study, effects of red-light, yellow-light, green-light, blue-light and white-light on the umami taste and aroma of dried Suillus granulatus were investigated. The results showed that contents of umami amino acids and 5-nucleotides, equivalent umami concentration (EUC) and electronic tongue umami scores were higher under blue-light treatment. Endoscopic Endonasal Resection of a Cavernous Malformation of the Third Ventricle: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Suprasellar and third ventricle cavernous malformations (CMs) are uncommon. Conventional approaches such as interhemispheric and translamina terminalis approaches are often used to resect these lesions. Here we demonstrate the use of the endoscopic endonasal approach for a third ventricle CM. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 31-year-old man presented with progressive symptoms of headache and visual disturbance as well as short-term memory deficit over a 6-month period. Neurologic examination revealed bitemporal hemianopsia. Radiologic images showed a suprasellar lesion extending into the third

Posterior nasal neurectomy for intractable rhinitis: A systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis affects up to 40% of the population worldwide and can significantly reduce quality of life. Some patients remain symptomatic despite maximal medical therapy. In refractory cases, posterior nasal neurectomy (PNN-the endoscopic division of the intranasal nerve branches containing postganglionic parasympathetic fibres) is postulated to reduce symptom burden. OBJECTIVES OF REVIEW: To establish whether PNN is effective and safe in the management of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis. TYPE OF REVIEW: Systematic review. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was undertaken
