Remediation of aristolochic acid-contaminated soil by an effective advanced oxidation process.

Aristolochic acids (AAs) are persistent soil pollutants in the agricultural fields of the Balkan Peninsula that are endemic for Aristolochia clematitis L. This class of carcinogenic and nephrotoxic phytotoxins is taken up by crops through root absorption and contaminates staple foods across the peninsula. Human exposure to AAs via dietary intake has recently been recognized as a cause of Balkan endemic nephropathy. For the sake of public health, human exposure to AAs from all sources should be minimized in a timely manner. However, currently, there is no available remediation method to remove

The role of oxidation of low-density lipids in pathogenesis of osteoarthritis: A narrative review.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic joint disorder that causes degeneration of cartilage, synovial inflammation, and formation of osteophytes. Aging, obesity, and sex are considered the main risk factors of OA. Recent studies have suggested that metabolic syndrome (MetS) disorders, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and obesity, may be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of OA. MetS disorders are common diseases that also result in atherosclerosis. Researchers believe that OA and atherosclerosis have underlying similar molecular mechanisms because the prevalence of

Arsenite induces testicular oxidative stress in vivo and in vitro leading to ferroptosis.

Ferroptosis is a newly identified form of cell death characterized by accumulation of intracellular iron and requirement of lipid peroxidation. However, whether arsenite triggers testicular cell death via ferroptosis remains unclear. In this study, after administrating of adult male mice with 0.5, 5 and 50 mg/L arsenite for six months via drinking water, the results showed that arsenite caused the pathological changes in mouse testis and significantly reduced the number of sperm. Mitochondrial injuries were observed as the major ultrastructural damages induced by arsenite, and these damages we

Reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) and oxidative stress in arthroplasty.

The interplay between implant design, biomaterial characteristics, and the local microenvironment adjacent to the implant is of utmost importance for implant performance and success of the joint replacement surgery. Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) are among the various factors affecting the host as well as the implant components. Excessive formation of ROS and RNS can lead to oxidative stress, a condition that is known to damage cells and tissues and also to affect signaling pathways. It may further compromise implant longevity by accelerating implant degradation, primarily thro

Effects of Fluoride on Oxidative Stress Markers of Lipid, Gene, and Protein in Rats.

Endemic fluorosis is a systemic chronic disease caused by excessive intake of fluoride. It is widely accepted that oxidative stress is closely related to fluorosis; however, molecular mechanism of oxidative stress in fluorosis remains unclear. This study investigated the effects of fluoride (F) on oxidative stress markers of lipid, gene, and protein in rats for revealing molecular mechanism of oxidative stress in fluorosis. The results showed concentration and exposure time of fluoride both had a significant effect on MDA and 8-OHdG. Fluoride concentration significantly impacted AGEs level, bu

Resveratrol reduces oxidative damage and inflammation in mice infected with Trichinella spiralis.

Trichinellosis is a serious food-borne zoonotic infection of cosmopolitan distribution. Currently, treatment for trichinellosis is far from ideal. Given the important role of oxidative stress and immune-mediated inflammation in the pathogenesis of trichinellosis, this study was designed to evaluate the possible protective effects of resveratrol (RSV) during the intestinal and muscular phases of Trichinella spiralis infection in mice. The oral administration of RSV at a dose of 20 mg/kg once daily for two weeks resulted in significant reductions in both adult and larval counts; significant impr

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of oxidative stress: We should treat it that way.

Periodontitis is a highly prevalent disease. As it progresses, it causes serious morbidity in the form of periodontal abscesses and tooth loss and, in the latter stages, pain. It is also now known that periodontitis is strongly associated with several nonoral diseases. Thus, patients with periodontitis are at greater risk for the development and/or exacerbation of diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular diseases, among other conditions. Although it is without question that specific groups of oral bacteria which populate dental plaque play a causative role in the dev

Antioxidant Therapy against Oxidative Damage of the Inner Ear: Protection and Preconditioning.

Oxidative stress is an important mechanism underlying cellular damage of the inner ear, resulting in hearing loss. In order to prevent hearing loss, several types of antioxidants have been investigated; several experiments have shown their ability to effectively prevent noise-induced hearing loss, age-related hearing loss, and ototoxicity in animal models. Exogenous antioxidants has been used as single therapeutic agents or in combination. Antioxidant therapy is generally administered before the production of reactive oxygen species. However, post-exposure treatment could also be effective. Pr

Cross talk between alcohol-induced oxidative stress and HCV replication.

Alcohol consumption exacerbates the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and aggravates disease consequences in alcohol-abusing patients. Although the exact reasons by which alcohol consumption affects several cellular pathways in liver cells are not clear, they might be partially attributed to the ability of alcohol to further suppress the innate immunity, modulation of autophagy and also its relationship with reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. To evaluate these issues, Huh7 cells harboring HCV replicon and Cytochrome p450 (CYP2E1) plasmid were exposed to ethanol and mRNA

Graphene Oxide-Silver Nanoparticle Nanohybrids: Synthesis, Characterization, and Antimicrobial Properties.

Drug resistance of pathogenic microorganisms has become a global public health problem, which has prompted the development of new materials with antimicrobial properties. In this context, antimicrobial nanohybrids are an alternative due to their synergistic properties. In this study, we used an environmentally friendly one-step approach to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) decorated with silver nanoparticles (GO-AgNPs). By this process, spherical AgNPs of average size less than 4 nm homogeneously distributed on the surface of the partially reduced GO can be generated in the absence of any stabili

Effects of resveratrol on intestinal oxidative status and inflammation in heat-stressed rats.

Heat stress, experienced by humans and animals under high ambient temperatures, is known to induce oxidative stress and inflammation, which endangers human health as well as animal welfare and production. The gastrointestinal tract is predominantly responsive to heat stress and compromised intestinal functions can contribute to multi-organ injury under heat environment. Resveratrol (RSV) has significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential effects of RSV on intestinal function (digestion and barrier), oxidative stress and inflamma

Proapoptotic effects of 2,5‑hexanedione on pheochromocytoma cells via oxidative injury.

N‑hexanes are prominent environmental pollutants that are able to cause neurotoxicity in vivo and in vitro. Central and peripheral neuropathies induced by n‑hexane exposure are a major health concern. 2,5‑Hexanedione (2,5‑HD) is the most significant neurotoxic metabolite of n‑hexane; however, little is known regarding the underlying mechanism of its neurotoxicity. Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate the damaging effects of 2,5‑HD on pheochromocytoma PC12 cells, and to explore the underlying mechanism. Cell viability was tested using a Cell Counting Kit‑8 method, and the leaka

Upregulated PDK4 expression is a sensitive marker of increased fatty acid oxidation.

Fatty acid oxidation is a central fueling pathway for mitochondrial ATP production. Regulation occurs through multiple nutrient- and energy-sensitive molecular mechanisms. We explored if upregulated mRNA expression of the mitochondrial enzyme pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 (PDK4) may be used as a surrogate marker of increased mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, by indicating an overall shift from glucose to fatty acids as the preferred oxidation fuel. The association between fatty acid oxidation and PDK4 expression was studied in different contexts of metabolic adaption. In rats treated with

Nitric oxide and peroxynitrite trigger and enhance release of neutrophil extracellular traps.

Despite great interest, the mechanism of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release is not fully understood and some aspects of this process, e.g. the role of reactive nitrogen species (RNS), still remain unclear. Therefore, our aim was to investigate the mechanisms underlying RNS-induced formation of NETs and contribution of RNS to NETs release triggered by various physiological and synthetic stimuli. The involvement of RNS in NETs formation was studied in primary human neutrophils and differentiated human promyelocytic leukemia cells (HL-60 cells). RNS (peroxynitrite and nitric oxide) eff
