Experiences of the diagnosis and treatment of 41 patients with intussusception are presented. The most common signs and symptoms upon presentation were vomiting (83%), colicky pain (83%), rectal bleeding (66%) and abdominal mass (51%). All four features occurred together in only 20% of cases. Ultrasound was the primary mode of investigation in four children, giving a finding characteristic of intussusception. 27 patients were examined with barium enema, and hydrostatic reduction was tried. A retrospective study of 98 patients representing 104 instances of intussusception is reviewed. Criteria for inclusion in the study were: the patients primary admitted to the department of diagnostic radiology, plain abdominal radiographs performed prior to barium enema (BE) and/or surgery and diagnosis confirmed by BE or surgery. A success rate of BE reduction of 58.6% was achieved. The clinical features are described and the value of plain abdominal radiograph in ruling out the diagnosis of intussusception is discussed.

An own case of a primary mediastinal endodermal sinus tumour (yolk sac tumour) is presented that was transformed under therapy into an AFP-negative process and occurred combined with an arcus aortae dexter. This is followed by a description of the clinical and diagnostic patterns of signs and symptoms and of the treatment of this very rare dysontogenetic tumour.

Examination of the intestine by computed tomography can supply additional information on diseases of the intestinal wall. However, the successful interpretation of the bowel wall by CT requires a special technique by which normal structures are opacified, identified and not mistaken for abnormal masses. The rectal administration of water improves the visualisation of the bowel wall and the diagnostic accuracy. This safe, reliable and acceptable method for opacifying the colon and rectum is described. Its value is demonstrated by means of normal and pathological examples.

The results of 27 percutaneous transluminal angioplasties (PTA) of the subclavian artery are reported in 25 patients. 13 patients complained of claudicatio brachii, 7 also demonstrated symptoms of vertebral-basilar insufficiency. Gallstone ileus is a rare complication of cholecystolithiasis with a high mortality and a high rate of postoperative complications caused by the advanced age of the patients and the often delayed diagnosis. A new study is presently being conducted on the exposure of the Swiss population to radiation by diagnostic measures. This study is performed by the Department of Medical Radiation Physics of the University of Berne in collaboration with the Federal Health Bureau and the Swiss Institute for Health and Hospital Matters. In earlier studies the genetically significant exposure of the population and subsequently the median exposure of the red bone marrow had been investigated, whereas now the risk exposure to radiation of as far as possible practically all the risk-relevant organs will be studied.

Distal knotting of a pulmonary artery catheter that had been introduced via the subclavian or jugular vein, is a possible complication. To avoid venous dissection in the thoracic or cervical regions, removal via a transfemoral approach should be considered as a feasible alternative. PTA was employed in 19 patients with impotency caused by vascular disorders. In 16 (84%) of the patients, potency was successfully restored. PTA treatment was applied only to those patients under 50 years of age in whom moderate and limited arteriosclerotic stenoses were diagnosed via DSA. Ureteral ectopias, which mostly occur in ureteral duplications, become noticeable in women quite early by characteristic clinical signs (dribble, or urinary incontinence). In males, it is usually only a stenosis-conditioned dilatation of the ureter that results in an uncharacter-istic pattern of complaints. The article presents the clinical pattern of signs and the x-ray findings in a man of 42 year of age, who had not reported any complaints until then, with an excessive dilatation of an extopically discharging single ureter.

This is a report on a patient suffering from a progressive ulcerative tumour of the vault of the cranium with accompanying osteolytic destruction. The disease pattern was interpreted first after a biopsy from the marginal wall of the inflammation as a case of pyoderma. It was only on postmortem examination that an angiosarcoma of the ulcerative type was correctly diagnosed. The ulcerative type of angiosarcoma is sometimes difficult to differentiate from inflammatory skin diseases.

A case of a fully developed hereditary onycho-osteo-arthrodysplasia (nail-patella syndrome) is presented. The typical signs, such as the iliac horns or variations of the knees, cubitals and nails should be familiar to every radiologist. The associated nephropathy seems to be caused by typical changes in the glomerular basement membrane seen in electron microscopy. Asymptomatic proteinuria is found in about 60% of the cases, in 5.5-8% the disease leads to the necessity of haemodialysis because of renal insufficiency. Hence, early diagnosis is very important.
