Machine learning-based COVID-19 diagnosis by demographic characteristics and clinical data.

INTRODUCTION: To facilitate rapid and effective diagnosis of COVID-19, effective screening can alleviate the challenges facing healthcare systems. We aimed to develop a machine learning-based prediction of COVID-19 diagnosis and design a graphical user interface (GUI) to diagnose COVID-19 cases by recording their symptoms and demographic features. METHODS: We implemented different classification models including support vector machine (SVM), Decision tree (DT), Naïve Bayes (NB) and K-nearest neighbor (KNN) to predict the result of COVID-19 test for individuals. We trained these models by data

Predicting Persistent Renal Failure Necessitating Dialysis in Patients Undergoing Elective, Open Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair.

BACKGROUND: Acute renal failure remains a significant complication after open thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair and is associated with high mortality. Rigorous risk estimation for this complication is vital for these patients. METHODS: Data were analyzed from 2809 patients who underwent elective, open TAAA repair between 1986 and 2024 at a single practice. Persistent renal failure was defined as the need for dialysis at time of operative discharge (including any hospital transfer) or death. The effectiveness of 4 predictive models-multivariable logistic regression, random forest,

Predicting clinical progression trajectories of early Alzheimer's disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Models for forecasting individual clinical progression trajectories in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) are needed for optimizing clinical studies and patient monitoring. METHODS: Prediction models were constructed using a clinical trial training cohort (TC; n = 934) via a gradient boosting algorithm and then evaluated in two validation cohorts (VC 1, n = 235; VC 2, n = 421). Model inputs included baseline clinical features (cognitive function assessments, APOE ε4 status, and demographics) and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures. RESULTS: The model using clinical featur

A computational framework for predicting obesity risk based on optimizing and integrating genetic risk score and gene expression profiles.

Recent large-scale genome-wide association studies have identified tens of genetic loci robustly associated with Body Mass Index (BMI). Gene expression profiles were also found to be associated with BMI. However, accurate prediction of obesity risk utilizing genetic data remains challenging. In a cohort of 75 individuals, we integrated 27 BMI-associated SNPs and obesity-associated gene expression profiles. Genetic risk score was computed by adding BMI-increasing alleles. The genetic risk score was significantly correlated with BMI when an optimization algorithm was used that excluded some SNPs

Machine Learning-Based Identification of Petroleum Distillates and Gasoline Traces Using Measured and Synthetic GC Spectra from Collected Samples.

Ignition cases involving arsons are typically handled by forensic experts who examine spectra of samples collected from scenes of fire to test for the existence or absence of ignitable liquids. This is tedious work, since many cases do not involve such liquids. To facilitate this process, we have developed in this work a Machine Learning (ML)-based workflow for samples' classification based on their gas chromatography (GC) chromatograms (i.e., spectra). To this end, annotated spectra of 181 samples containing three groups of liquids (petroleum distillates, gasoline, and an assortment of other

Prediction of good functional outcome decreases diagnostic uncertainty in unconscious survivors after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

PURPOSE: To explore modifications of the 2021 European Resuscitation Council/European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ERC/ESICM) guideline algorithm for neuroprognostication after cardiac arrest to improve its prognostic accuracy. METHODS: Post-hoc analysis of four prospective multicentre studies (TTM, TTM2, KORHN and ProNeCA). We raised the Glasgow Coma Scale motor (GCS-M) inclusion threshold at 72 h after cardiac arrest from the current GCS-M < 4 to GCS-M < 6 (all unconscious patients). Secondly, we included good outcome predictors (GCS-M 4-5, neuron-specific enolase < 17 µg/L, benign e

Extracting Features from Poincaré Plots to Distinguish Congestive Heart Failure Patients According to NYHA Classes.

Heart-rate variability has proved a valid tool in prognosis definition of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Previous research has documented Poincaré plot analysis as a valuable approach to study heart-rate variability performance among different subjects. In this paper, we explored the possibility to feed machine-learning (ML) algorithms using unconventional quantitative parameters extracted from Poincaré plots (generated from 24-h electrocardiogram recordings) to classify patients with CHF belonging to different New York Heart Association (NYHA) classes. We performed in sequence

MSCA: a spectral comparison algorithm between time series to identify protein-protein interactions.

BACKGROUND: The interactions between pathogen proteins and their hosts allow pathogens to manipulate host cellular mechanisms to their advantage. The identification of host proteins that are targeted by virulent pathogen proteins is crucial to increase our understanding of infection mechanisms and to propose new therapeutics that target pathogens. Understanding the virulence mechanisms of pathogens requires a detailed molecular description of the proteins involved, but acquiring this knowledge is time consuming and prohibitively expensive. Therefore, we develop a statistical method based on hy

Predicting depression in middle-aged adults using kidney deficiency questionnaire: an exploratory machine learning study.

In Korean medicine (KM), kidney deficiency represents age-related physiological decline theoretically linked to depression. However, its empirical predictive value in modern clinical frameworks remains underexplored. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model predicting depression in middle-aged adults by integrating kidney deficiency with psychosocial variables. We analyzed baseline data from 1000 community-dwelling adults aged 50-65 from the Korean Medicine for Aging Cohort study. Depression was defined using the Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF-K ≥ 5). Pr

Interpretable machine learning model for predicting early recurrence of pancreatic cancer: integrating intratumoral and peritumoral radiomics with body composition.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with a high rate of early recurrence (ER) after radical resection, which significantly affects long-term survival. Currently, no reliable system exists for predicting ER in these patients. This study aimed to develop a machine learning (ML) model combining intratumoral and peritumoral radiomic features with body composition to predict the ER risk in patients with PDAC following radical resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included patients with PDAC who underwent upfront surgery at four hospitals between June 2014 and D

Diagnostic Accuracy of Spleen-Dedicated 100 Hz Transient Elastography to Predict High-Risk Esophageal Varices.

INTRODUCTION: The Baveno VII consensus suggested different splenic stiffness measurement (SSM) cut-offs to predict High-Risk Esophageal Varices (HREV) and clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) in patients with cirrhosis. Few studies have validated these cut-offs using spleen-dedicated 100 Hz transient elastography (TE). We have assessed the diagnostic performance of SSM in predicting HREV and CSPH using a spleen-dedicated 100 Hz TE and compared it with other noninvasive algorithms. METHODS: This is a single-centre prospective study including patients with cirrhosis. Endoscopy, spl

Single-cell and bulk RNA-sequence identified fibroblasts signature and CD8 + T-cell - fibroblast subtype predicting prognosis and immune therapeutic response of bladder cancer, based on machine learning: bioinformatics multi-omics study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) are found in primary and advanced tumours. They are primarily involved in tumour progression through complex mechanisms with other types of cells in the tumour microenvironment. However, essential fibroblasts-related genes (FRG) in bladder cancer still need to be explored, and there is a shortage of an ideal predictive model or molecular subtype for the progression and immune therapeutic assessment for bladder cancer, especially muscular-invasive bladder cancer based on the FRG. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CAF-related genes of bladder cancer were id
