On the time dependent diffusion of macromolecules through transient open junctions and their subendothelial spread. 2. Long time model for interaction between leakage sites.

In Part 1 of this study (Weinbaum et al., 1988) a short time model has been proposed to describe the initial time dependent leakage of macromolecules at short distances (5 microns or less) from the exit of a transient open junction which the authors have hypothesized as a characteristic feature of endothelial cells in the process of turnover (Weinbaum et al., 1985). This open junction pathway has also been proposed (Weinbaum et al., 1988) to be the primary ultrastructural correlate of the 20 nm diameter large pore suggested by Renkin et al. (1977) using the predictions of cylindrical pore theo

Youth risk behavior surveillance--United States, 2007.

PROBLEM: Priority health-risk behaviors, which are behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults, often are established during childhood and adolescence, extend into adulthood, are interrelated, and are preventable. REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: January--December 2007. DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM: The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) monitors six categories of priority health-risk behaviors among youth and young adults, including behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence; tobacco use; alcohol and other drug u

Magnetic resonance imaging of the genitourinary tract.

MRI is in its infancy as a clinical imaging tool. It is undergoing intensive investigation in various areas of the body. Evaluation of the brain and spine is superb, and in some areas of the brain, like the posterior fossa, it is thought to be superior to CT. Evolving indications for body scanning include staging of pelvic malignancies, evaluation of liver malignancy, evaluation and staging of musculoskeletal problems, and, to a lesser degree, staging of renal malignancies and evaluation of vascular disease. The main problem in body imaging stems from image degradation because of respiratory m

Fronto-limbic white matter microstructure, behavior, and emotion regulation in survivors of pediatric brain tumor.

PURPOSE: After treatment, pediatric brain tumor survivors (PBTS) face emotional and behavioral challenges, perhaps due to tumor or treatment-related changes in brain structures involved in emotion regulation, including those with fronto-limbic connections. We hypothesized that relative to healthy controls (HCs), PBTS would exhibit greater difficulties with behavior and emotional functioning, and display reduced mean fractional anisotropy (mFA) in white matter tracts with fronto-limbic connections including the cingulum bundle (CB), inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), and uncinate fasc

Effects of the Co-occurrence of Anxiety and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on Intrinsic Functional Network Centrality among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) present with a high co-occurrence of anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, it remains unclear how the co-occurrence of anxiety and ADHD in children with ASD alters whole-brain functional networks. Here, we aimed to examine anxiety- and ADHD-related brain network centrality in children with ASD separately and their relationships with ASD symptoms. Clinical anxiety and ADHD levels in children with ASD, aged 6-13 years old, were assessed. Participants were categorized into four groups: ASD only (n = 28), ASD + anxiety (n

The effectiveness of problem solving therapy for stroke patients: study protocol for a pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Coping style is one of the determinants of health-related quality of life after stroke. Stroke patients make less use of active problem-oriented coping styles than other brain damaged patients. Coping styles can be influenced by means of intervention. The primary aim of this study is to investigate if Problem Solving Therapy is an effective group intervention for improving coping style and health-related quality of life in stroke patients. The secondary aim is to determine the effect of Problem Solving Therapy on depression, social participation, health care consumption, and to det

Treating alcohol problems with couple therapy.

Couple therapy for treating alcohol use disorders (AUDs) results in less drinking and greater relationship stability and satisfaction in both men and women with AUDs. The theoretical tenets, treatment methods, and research evidence for Alcohol Behavioral Couple Therapy (ABCT) are summarized. The application of ABCT is illustrated through the treatment of a 42-year-old woman with an AUD and her 56-year-old husband. During 12 sessions over a 6-month period, the woman attained abstinence from alcohol and learned cognitive and behavioral coping skills to deal with drinking antecedents. Her husband

Adjustment trade-offs of co-rumination in mother-adolescent relationships.

The current study examined co-rumination (i.e., extensively discussing, rehashing, and speculating about problems) in the context of mother-adolescent relationships. Fifth-, eighth-, and eleventh-graders (N=516) reported on co-rumination and more normative self-disclosure with mothers, their relationships with mothers, and their own internalizing symptoms. A subset of mothers (N=200) reported on mother-adolescent co-rumination and self-disclosure. Results from the adolescent-report data indicated greater mother-adolescent co-rumination with daughters than sons and also adjustment trade-offs of

Gambling behaviour and the prevalence of gambling problems in adult EGM gamblers when EGMs are banned. A natural experiment.

In this article, findings of a panel study among former EGM gamblers are discussed. The data were collected in two waves during 2007, and 1293 people, 18 years or older, participated. The background for the study was the Norwegian ban on EGMs from 1 July 2007, and the aim was to investigate how this ban affected gambling involvement and problem levels in the sample. The analysis shows that gambling participation, gambling frequencies and gambling problems were reduced after EGMs disappeared from the market. There was no indication of the development of an illegal EGM market, or of substitution

Impact of ambiguity and risk on decision making in mild Alzheimer's disease.

Decisions under ambiguity and decisions under risk are crucial types of decision making in daily living at any age. This is the first study assessing these two types of decisions in patients with mild dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) by means of the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and a newly developed, Probability-Associated Gambling (PAG) task. While rules for gains and losses are implicit in the IGT, in the PAG task rules are explicit and winning probabilities, which change from trial to trial, can be estimated. Results of the IGT indicated that DAT patients made more disadvantageous decisions t

Impulse control and aggressive response generation as predictors of aggressive behaviour in children with mild intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence.

BACKGROUND: A growing interest exists in mechanisms involved in behaviour problems in children with mild intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence (MID/BI). Social problem solving difficulties have been found to be an explanatory mechanism for aggressive behaviour in these children. However, recently a discrepancy was found between automatic and reflective responding in social situations. We hypothesise that low impulse control and aggressive social problem solving strategies together may explain mechanisms involved in aggressive behaviour by children with MID/BI. METHOD: In a cli

The relation between social problems and substance use in adolescent boys: an investigation of potential moderators.

This study investigated the relation between social problems and adolescent male substance use in the context of other potential moderating variables. Two hundred eighty adolescent boys completed measures of social problems, cognitive distortions, constructive thinking, affiliation with delinquent peers, and multiple aspects of substance use. Results revealed that social problems were not directly related to most substance use variables. Cognitive distortions moderated the relation between social problems and substance use in social situations, such that the relation was significant only at hi

Maternal interaction style in affective disordered, physically ill, and normal women.

Affective style (AS) and communication deviance (CD) have been suggested as markers of dysfunctional family environments that may be associated with psychiatric illness. Studies have focused mainly on parental responses during family interactions when an offspring is the identified patient. The present study is unique in examining AS and CD in mothers with unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, or chronic physical illness, and in normal controls. The sample consisted of 64 mothers with children ages 8 to 16. Unipolar mothers were more likely to show negative AS than were any other maternal gro

Joint associations between gestational environmental chemical mixtures and child behavioral outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Gestational exposure to environmental chemicals contributes to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. We aim to evaluate the joint associations between gestational chemical biomarkers and behavioral functioning in preschool-aged children. METHODS: We pooled data from 695 mother-child dyads (female, n = 353; male, n = 342) enrolled in the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) & Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) Studies. We assessed concentrations of 29 EDC biomarkers at gestation and assessed the child's behavior and executive fu

Cohort Profile: The Tokyo Adolescent Mental Health Study (TAMHS).

The Tokyo Adolescent Mental Health Study (TAMHS) is an ongoing, school-based longitudinal cohort designed to elucidate the developmental trajectories of mental health among adolescents in Japan and to inform evidence-based strategies for promoting adolescent well-being. Since its inception in 2009, TAMHS has annually tracked adolescents aged 12-18 from a Tokyo secondary school known for its tradition of enrolling twins and triplets. Participants are followed for up to 6 years. As of 2024, 2,435 adolescents (1,211 boys, 1,196 girls, 28 unspecified), including 551 twins and triplets (22%), have

Case Report of Hemomania: Recurrent Bloodletting and Blood Consumption From Self and Others.

Hemomania is a proposed term for incontrollable urges to see, release, or ingest blood which is not a formally recognized diagnostic entity. This behavioral phenomenon overlaps with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), impulse control disorders, and elements of clinical vampirism. We present the case of a 22-year-old female with a longstanding history of bloodletting using syringes, blood ingestion, and collection. The patient collected blood in vials, sometimes mixed them with water and drank it. She also collected and consumed blood from other individuals and animals occasionally. These behaviors

Efficacy of sialic acid supplementation in early life in autism model rats.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, the etiology of which remains elusive. Sialic acid (SA) is an essential nutrient for nervous system development, and previous studies reported that the levels of SA were decreased in the blood and saliva of ASD children. However, it is not clear whether SA supplementation can alleviate behavioral problems in autism. We administered SA intervention in the VPA-induced autism model rats, evaluated behavior performance, and measured the levels of Gne and St8sia2 genes, BDNF and anti-GM1. At the same time, untar

ERP Indicators of Phonological Awareness Development in Children: A Systematic Review.

Phonological awareness is the ability to correctly recognize and manipulate phonological structures. The role of phonological awareness in reading development has become evident in behavioral research showing that it is inherently tied to measures of phonological processing and reading ability. This has also been shown with ERP research that examined how phonological processing training can benefit reading skills. However, there have not been many attempts to systematically review how phonological awareness itself is developed neurocognitively. In the present review, we screened 224 papers and
