The Association Between Serum Neurofilament Light Chain and Inflammatory Markers in Psychiatric Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have found mild elevations of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) - a marker of neuroaxonal injury - in vario … tected. At the subgroup levels, the associations remained statistically significant in the mood and psychotic disorders groups, and only for IL-6 in anxiety disorders group. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence of an association between levels of inflammation (IL-6 and TNF-α) and neuroaxonal injury (sNfL) in PD.

Feasibility of a Supportive Cancer Care Intervention for Patients With Pre-Existing Severe Mental Disorders-The CASEMED Model.

BACKGROUND: Patients with pre-existing severe mental disorders (SMD) face barriers to optimal cancer treatment. Structured interventions may … moderate to severe depression (65%), bipolar affective disorders (26%), or schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (9%). Overall, the intervention was feasible and well-accepted, with minimal burden reported. It facilitated a multidisciplinary approach, patient-centered care and cross-sector collaboration. The main implementation barriers included difficulties i …

Neuroanatomical and Functional Correlates in Bipolar Disorder (BD): A Narrative Review.

The incidence of mood disorders in the general population is quite high. Among the most common is bipolar disorder (BD), often associated with severe mood disorders, psychotic changes (e.g., delusions, hallucinations), impulsivity, and self-harm. However, its correct diagnosis is challenging, primarily due to the heterogeneity of clinical and symptomatic features, as well as individual differences among patients, such as comorbidity with other disorders (e.g., borderline personality disorder). Therefore, to improve understanding of its etiology and pathogenesis, refining the diagnosis must be

Neuroanatomical Deficits in Visual Cortex Subregions of Individuals with Psychosis Spectrum Disorders linked to Symptoms, Cognition, and Childhood Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: The visual system is a significant site of pathology in psychosis spectrum disorders. However, there is limited research investig … is study demonstrates that the visual cortex is among the most profoundly affected brain regions in psychotic disorders. Different patterns of area and thickness changes across early and mid-level visual subregions, along with their varying associations with clinical measures, suggest distinct developmental and disease-related influences.

Restorative properties of chronic lurasidone treatment on emotional dysfunction in rats exposed to chronic unavoidable stress: A role for medial prefrontal cortex - nucleus accumbens network.

Anhedonia, a transdiagnostic symptom prevalent in depressive and psychotic disorders, poses a significant challenge for pharmacological intervention due to its association with impaired motivation. Understanding how psychotropic drugs can modulate this pathological domain and elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying such effects are crucial endeavors in psychiatric research. In this study, we aimed to investigate the pro-motivational properties of lurasidone in a rat (Sprague Dawley males) model of anhedonia and to unravel the interplay between lurasidone and the brain regions critical …

Toxoplasma gondii infection in people with schizophrenia is related to higher hair glucocorticoid levels.

INTRODUCTION: Toxoplasma gondii (TG) is a common protozoan parasite infecting approximately one third of the human population. Animal studies have shown that this parasite can manipulate its host behavior. Based on this, human studies have assessed if TG can be involved in mental health disorders associated with important behavioral modifications such as schizophrenia. However, results have been discrepant. Given that TG has a strong impact on fear and risk-taking processes in animal studies and that fear and risk-taking behaviors are associated with the human stress response, we tested whethe

Case report: 10 years follow-up of psychosis due to Fahr's disease complicated by a left temporal stroke.

Fahr's disease (FD) is a rare disorder, characterized by basal ganglia calcification and presenting with movement disorders, speech impairment, cognitive deficits, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Psychotic disorders related to FD are barely described in the literature, and knowledge is missing concerning pathophysiology, course, and management. Here, we report on the long-term follow-up of a patient who had three acute episodes of FD-psychosis characterized by bizarre delusions and behavioral disorganization, without hallucinations. Genetic and metabolic causes of FD were ruled out. In all thre…

Aspects of Additional Psychiatric Disorders in Severe Depression/Melancholia: A Comparison between Suicides and Controls and General Pattern.

OBJECTIVE: Additional and comorbid diagnoses are common among suicide victims with major depressive disorder (MDD) and have been shown to increase the suicide risk. The aim of the present study was first, to investigate whether patients with severe depression/melancholia who had died by suicide showed more additional psychiatric disorders than a matched control group. Second, general rates of comorbid and additional diagnoses in the total group of patients were estimated and compared with literature on MDD. METHOD: A blind record evaluation was performed on 100 suicide victims with severe dep

The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome as a window into complex neuropsychiatric disorders over the lifespan.

Evidence is rapidly accumulating that rare, recurrent copy number variants represent large effect risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders. 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) (velocardiofacial syndrome or DiGeorge syndrome) is the most common known contiguous gene deletion syndrome and is associated with diverse neuropsychiatric disorders across the life span. One of the most intriguing aspects of the syndrome is the variability in clinical and cognitive presentation: children with 22q11DS have high prevalence of autism spectrum, attention deficit, and anxiety disorders, as well as psychot

Metacognitive therapy in people with a schizophrenia spectrum diagnosis and medication resistant symptoms: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for psychosis has been shown to be effective, but there are recent suggestions that it is less efficacious than initially thought. Metacognitive therapy (MCT), which focuses on metacognitive mechanisms, has led to positive results in other disorders, but has yet to be evaluated in people with schizophrenia spectrum diagnoses. This study evaluates the feasibility of MCT for people with psychotic disorders. METHODS: Ten participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders received up to 12 sessions of MCT in an open trial. Outcomes incl…

Psychiatric disorders and treatment among newly homeless young adults with histories of foster care.

OBJECTIVE: Although foster care placement is often preceded by stressful events such as child abuse, foster care itself often exposes children to additional severe stressors. A history of foster care, as well as the childhood abuse that often precedes it, is common among homeless young adults. This study examined whether a history of foster care was associated with psychiatric disorders, prior psychiatric counseling, prescription of psychiatric medications, and prior psychiatric hospitalization among newly homeless young adults. METHODS: A consecutive sample of 423 adults aged 18 to 21 years
