Immunomodulatory Effects of Histone Variant H2A.J in Ionizing Radiation Dermatitis.

PURPOSE: Histone variant H2A.J is associated with premature senescence after ionizing radiation (IR) and modulates senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Using constitutive H2A.J knock-out mice, the role of H2A.J was investigated in radiation dermatitis. METHODS AND MATERIALS: H2A.J wild-type (WT) and knock-out (KO) mice were exposed to moderate or high IR doses (≤20 Gy, skinfold IR). Radiation-induced skin reactions were investigated up to 2 weeks post-IR at macroscopic and microscopic levels. H2A.J and other senescence markers, as well as DNA damage and proliferation markers, wer

Effect of respiratory motion on internal radiation dosimetry.

PURPOSE: Estimation of the radiation dose to internal organs is essential for the assessment of radiation risks and benefits to patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures including PET. Respiratory motion induces notable internal organ displacement, which influences the absorbed dose for external exposure to radiation. However, to their knowledge, the effect of respiratory motion on internal radiation dosimetry has never been reported before. METHODS: Thirteen computational models representing the adult male at different respiratory phases corresponding to the

Irradiated riboflavin over nonradiated one: Potent antimigratory, antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects on glioblastoma cells.

Riboflavin is a water-soluble yellowish vitamin and is controversial regarding its effect on tumour cells. Riboflavin is a powerful photosensitizer that upon exposure to radiation, undergoes an intersystem conversion with molecular oxygen, leading to the production of ROS. In the current study, we sought to ascertain the impact of irradiated riboflavin on C6 glioblastoma cells regarding proliferation, cell death, oxidative stress and migration. First, we compared the proliferative behaviour of cells following nonradiated and radiated riboflavin. Next, we performed apoptotic assays including An

Galactic cosmic ray simulation at the NASA space radiation laboratory - Progress, challenges and recommendations on mixed-field effects.

For missions beyond low Earth orbit to the moon or Mars, space explorers will encounter a complex radiation field composed of various ion species with a broad range of energies. Such missions pose significant radiation protection challenges that need to be solved in order to minimize exposures and associated health risks. An innovative galactic cosmic ray simulator (GCRsim) was recently developed at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The GCRsim technology is intended to represent major components of the space radiation environment in a ground an

Estimation and reduction of the radiation dose to the fetus from external-beam radiotherapy.

The appearance of a malignant disease during pregnancy is relatively rare. The use of external-beam radiation therapy is limited to non-pelvic tumors which are usually located above the diaphragm. However, supradiaphragmatic radiotherapy unavoidably exposes the fetus to secondary radiation due to head leakage, scatter from the machine and scatter produced inside the patient. This fetal exposure may be associated with an elevated risk for the development of deterministic harmful effects and/or carcinogenesis. The decision about the administration of radiotherapy in a pregnant patient is influen

The Chernobyl experience in the area of retrospective dosimetry.

The Chernobyl accident, which occurred on 26 April 1986 at a nuclear power plant located less than 150 km north of Kiev, was the largest nuclear accident to date. The unprecedented scale of the accident was determined not only by the amount of released activity, but also by the number of workers and of the general public involved, and therefore exposed to increased doses of ionising radiation. Due to the unexpected and large scale of the accident, dosimetry techniques and practices were far from the optimum; personal dosimetry of cleanup workers (liquidators) was not complete, and there were n

Ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D3 in amphibian health, behaviour, diet and conservation.

Amphibians are currently suffering a period of mass extinction with approximately 20% of species under severe threat and more than 120 species already extinct. In light of this crisis there is an urgency to establish viable ex situ populations and also find the causes of in situ declines. The role of ultraviolet radiation and Vitamin D(3) in amphibian health directly influences both ex situ and in situ populations. Vitamin D(3) can be photosynthesised endogenously via UV-B radiation (UV-B), or acquired through the diet, and then metabolised to calcitriol the biologically active hormonal form.

Quantitative measurement of radiation-induced base products in DNA using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with selected-ion monitoring was used to study radiation-induced damage to DNA. Quantitative analysis of modified purine and pyrimidine bases resulting from exposure to ionizing radiation using this technique is dependent upon the selection of appropriate internal standards and calibration of the mass spectrometer for its response to known quantities of the internal standards and the products of interest. The compounds 6-azathymine and 8-azaadenine were found to be suitable internal standards for quantitative measurement of base damage in DNA. For the purpo

Digital chest radiography with photostimulable storage phosphors: signal-to-noise ratio as a function of kilovoltage with matched exposure risk.

A photostimulable storage phosphor (PSP) digital radiography system was evaluated regarding the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) on chest images acquired at differing peak kilovoltage settings but with matched risk from radiation exposure. Images of two chest phantoms were acquired by using bedside (portable) imaging equipment at tube voltages ranging from 60 to 120 kV. Exposure factors were set so that the effective dose equivalent, a risk estimator weighted for various organs, was approximately equal in all exposures. The S/N in the lung-equivalent regions was found to be slightly higher (maximum…

Biological responses of tight junction to ionizing radiation and electromagnetic field expostion.

The tight junctions form and regulate the paracellular barrier in the intercellular spaces between epithelial and endothelial cells. They play important roles in the cellular and pathological processes, which follow exposure to radiation. Therefore, analysis of their changes upon different kind of irradiation may help to understand the basic events governing their function and give important information for the radiobiological research and clinical practice as well. The immunohistochemical data on the distribution of occludin presented here demonstrate the breakdown of tight junctions in Madin

Epidemiology of human leukemia.

The leukemias show clear geographic, racial, ethnic, age, and gender variation in both incidence and mortality, and the patterns of occurrence differ among subtypes. Despite decades of epidemiologic study, the known and suspected risk factors for leukemia are insufficient to explain more than a small fraction of the observed variation in the occurrence of the leukemias. Important contributions to the literature in 1993 included studies further clarifying the role of known risk factors (ionizing radiation, certain chemotherapeutic agents, and specific occupational chemical exposures) and suspec

Cancer incidence and mortality among flight personnel: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increased cancer risk among flight personnel have previously been noted, including breast cancer among flight attendants and acute myeloid leukemia among pilots. HYPOTHESIS: Exposure to cosmic radiation and other physical or chemical agents may pose health risks for flight personnel. METHODS: We performed an exhaustive search for published and unpublished cohort studies of flight personnel from 1986-98. We combined relative risks (RR) for selected causes from four mortality and/or incidence studies of pilots and two incidence studies of flight attendants, using standard meta-anal

Population Studies and Molecular Mechanisms of Human Radioadaptive Capabilities: Is It Time to Rethink Radiation Safety Standards?

The evolution of man on Earth took place under conditions of constant exposure to background ionizing radiation (IR). From this point of view, it would be reasonable to hypothesize the existence of adaptive mechanisms that enable the human organism to safely interact with IR at levels approximating long-term natural background levels. In some situations, the successful operation of molecular mechanisms of protection against IR is observed at values significantly exceeding the natural background level, for example, in cancer cells. In 15-25% of cancer patients, cancer cells develop a phenotype

Nanocomposite Co3O4-ZnO Thin Films for Photoconductivity Sensors.

Thin nanocomposite films based on zinc oxide (ZnO) added with cobalt oxide (Co3O4) were synthesized by solid-phase pyrolysis. According to XRD, the films consist of a ZnO wurtzite phase and a cubic structure of Co3O4 spinel. The crystallite sizes in the films increased from 18 nm to 24 nm with growing annealing temperature and Co3O4 concentration. Optical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data revealed that enhancing the Co3O4 concentration leads to a change in the optical absorption spectrum and the appearance of allowed transitions in the material. Electrophysical measurements showed that

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The purpose of this study was to determine the role of heat shock protein 72 (Hsp72) changes in cardiac injury caused by microwave radiation, aimed at providing novel insights into the mechanism of this damage. A digital thermometer was used to measure the rectal temperature of the rats' pre- and post-radiation. On the 1st, 7th, 14th, and 28th days post-radiation, the changes in electrocardiogram (ECG) were analyzed by a multi-channel physiological recorder. The myocardial enzyme activities and ion concentrations were detected by an automatic biochemical analyzer. Additionally, the levels of m

Total body irradiation induced mouse small intestine senescence as a late effect.

Radiation can induce senescence in many organs and tissues; however, it is still unclear how radiation stimulates senescence in mouse small intestine. In this study, we use the bone marrow transplantation mouse model to explore the late effects of total body irradiation on small intestine. Our results showed that almost all of the body hairs of the irradiated mice were white (which is an indication of aging) 10 months after the exposure to radiation. Furthermore, compared with the age-matched control mice, there were more SA-β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal)-positive cells and an upregulation of p16
