Idiopatic bowel disease, Crohn' s disease and ulcerative colitis, are grave illneses of gastrointestinal tract. Mechanisms that lead to the development of inflammatory bowel disease are not well understood, but genetic play an important role. The main arguments gathered are ethnic/racial difference in disease frequency, positive family history, increased concordance rate in monozygotic twins relative to dizygotic and genes associated with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. The enviromental factors play also an important role.

Attentional processes are crucial to ensure successful reading, and theories of dyslexia propose that dysfunctional attention networks may contribute to the observed reading deficits. The goals of this study were to localize a region of the frontal-eye-field (FEF) involved in both reading and attention and examine its connectivity with regions in the reading and attention networks, given the known role of the FEF in attentional processes and theorized role in reading. In Experiment 1, we revisited the results of our previous hybrid reading and attention study. We observed a significant reading

Large conductance calcium and voltage-activated potassium channels (BKCa ) are transmembrane proteins, ubiquitously expressed in the majority of organs, and play an active role in regulating cellular physiology. In the heart, BKCa channels are known to play a role in regulating the heart rate and protect it from ischemia-reperfusion injury. In vascular smooth muscle cells, the opening of BKCa channels results in membrane hyperpolarization which eventually results in vasodilation mediated by a reduction in Ca2+ influx due to the closure of voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. Ex vivo studies have s

The heart contains an abundant fibroblast population that may play a role in homeostasis, by maintaining the extracellular matrix (ECM) network, by regulating electrical impulse conduction, and by supporting survival and function of cardiomyocytes and vascular cells. Despite an explosion in our understanding of the role of fibroblasts in cardiac injury, the homeostatic functions of resident fibroblasts in adult hearts remain understudied. TGF-β-mediated signaling through the receptor-activated Smads, Smad2 and Smad3 critically regulates fibroblast function. We hypothesized that baseline expres

In the last decades an increasing attention has been devoted to the role of lymphatic system in pathomechanism. The disturbed lymph flow from a liver contributes to liver fibrogenesis and probably to hepatocirrhosis. Cytokines play a major role in the development of hepatic fibrosis, the wound-healing response of the liver to chronic injury. Cytokines in hepatic fibrogenesis may be pro- or antifibrogenic. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is pro-fibrogenic cytokine and plays a key role in liver fibrogenesis. Interferon-γ (INF-γ) is anti-fibrogenic by downregulating hepatic stellate cell a

Enhanced von Willebrand factor (VWF) clearance is important in the etiology of von Willebrand disease. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying VWF clearance remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the role of VWF domains and specific glycan moieties in regulating in vivo clearance. Our findings demonstrate that the A1 domain of VWF contains a receptor-recognition site that plays a key role in regulating the interaction of VWF with macrophages. In A1-A2-A3 and full-length VWF, this macrophage-binding site is cryptic but becomes exposed following exposure to shear or ristoc

BACKGROUND Endometriosis affects 6-10% of women of reproductive age and is associated with chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhoea, dyspareunia and infertility. Endometriosis is defined by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, most commonly attached to the pelvic peritoneum. The endometrium in women with endometriosis is reported to be altered and there is increasing evidence that the phenotype of the pelvic peritoneum may also play a role in the establishment and maintenance of the disease. The aim of this review is to discuss the putative role of the pelvic peritoneum in the path

In recent years major progress has been made in understanding the role of transcription factors in the development of the endocrine pancreas in the mouse. Here we describe how a number of these transcription factors play a role in maintaining the differentiated phenotype of the beta cell, and in the mechanisms that allow the beta cell to adapt to changing metabolic demands that occur throughout life. Amongst these factors, Pdx1 plays a critical role in defining the region of the primitive gut that will form the pancreas, Ngn3 expression drives cells towards an endocrine lineage, and a number o

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a worldwide medical issue with significant morbidity and mortality, as it is the main cause of chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Both innate and adaptive immune responses play a key role in HBV replication and suppression. Recently, the pathophysiological function of interleukins (IL) in the natural course of HBV has gained much attention as a result of the broad use of anti-interleukin agents for a variety of autoimmune diseases and the accompanying risk of HBV reactivation. We present a narrative review regarding the role of IL in

Exosomes have generated significant interest in the last few decades owing to their important roles in a diverse range of biological pathways. They are nano-sized lipid bilayer membrane vesicles of endosomal origin, and are produced by a vast number of cell types. They are released into the extracellular environment and are found in most biological fluids. Exosomes can contain proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. The cargo of exosomes allows them to play roles in cell communication, antigen presentation, as biomarkers and in immune regulation. Substantial efforts have been made to understand th

Autophagy is the process by which cells selectively remove damaged organelles or proteins. Chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) is a type of autophagy that degrades proteins containing the KFERQ pentapeptide in cells. CMA can degrade damaged or excess proteins and therefore plays an important role in maintaining protein balance in cells. CMA can also play a regulatory role by degrading key proteins in life activities, such as lipid and glucose metabolism. This review introduces the CMA process and describes the current commonly used CMA detection methods. In addition, we describe the role of CMA

The coxsackie-adenovirus receptor (CAR) is a cell surface transmembrane protein originally recognized for its role as a binding site for coxsackie- and adeno-viruses. As such, it is believed to play an important role in pathogenesis of myocarditis. Other studies have suggested that CAR also plays an important role in embryonic development, which is not surprising given the strong expression of the receptor in heart, brain, liver, pancreas, kidney, small intestine, and various epithelia during development. A number of studies have looked at downregulation and upregulation of CAR and have confir

The main risk factors for preterm babies developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) are poorly administered supplemental oxygen, infections, poor weight gain and transfusion of blood products, meaning ROP is sensitive to the quality of neonatal inpatient care provided, especially the nursing care. Nurses are the primary caregivers in neonatal units and play a critical role in preventing ROP related blindness. We discuss the role of the neonatal nurse in prevention of ROP based on a framework of five dimensions of care: specialist knowledge, clinical advocacy, leadership and mentorship, servic

Vitamins, either as coenzymes or hormone-like substances play an important role in the expression of genetic information and in the regulation of cellular metabolism, differentiation, and maturation. Recent epidemiologic evidence suggests that certain forms of cancer are more prevalent among populations with a limited intake of certain nutrients. Other evidence indicates that localized deficiency of a nutrient can occur in hormone-sensitive cells without overt systemic manifestations of deficiency disease. Folic acid, because of its key role in nucleic acid biosynthesis, and vitamin A, because

The prevailing concept in modern neuroscience is that neuron networks play a dominant role in the functioning of the nervous system, whereas the role of individual neurons is rather insignificant. This concept suggests that "individuality" of single neurons is primarily determined by their place in a network rather than their intrinsic properties. Here I argue that individual neurons may play an important, if not decisive, role in performing cognitive functions of the brain. This tentative viewpoint is supported by experimental and clinical insights into disorders of cognitive functions and by

Mycoplasmopsis synoviae is an important pathogen in poultry that primarily causes synovitis, tenosynovitis, eggshell abnormalities, and respiratory diseases, resulting in significant economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. The aim of this study was to systematically screen and characterize the proteins secreted by M. synoviae and to investigate the role of SSB in M. synoviae infection. We first identified 13 proteins secreted by M. synoviae using liquid chromatography‒tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Bioinformatic analysis of SSBs revealed that they lack a transmembrane domain and

Over the recent years the wider availability and application of state-of-the-art immunological technologies greatly advanced the insight into the mechanisms that play an important role in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) pathophysiology. This increased understanding has facilitated the development of novel treatments that target disease relevant pathways, hereby improving outcome for axSpA patients. In axSpA pathophysiology genetic and environmental factors as well as immune activation by mechanical or bacterial stress resulting in a chronic inflammatory response have a central role. The TNF an

Chemokines play important roles in homeostasis and inflammatory processes. While their roles in leukocyte recruitment are well-appreciated, chemokines play additional roles in the body, including mediating or regulating angiogenesis, tumor metastasis and wound healing. In this opinion article, we focus on the role of CXCR3 and its ligands in fibrotic processes. We emphasize differences of the effects of each ligand, CXCL9, CXCL10 and CXCL11, on fibroblasts in different tissues of the body. We include discussions of differences in signaling pathways that may account for protective or pro-fibrot

Small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) can identify macroscopic changes of coeliac disease and assess the extent of disease in the small bowel beyond the duodenum. SBCE has a good sensitivity for the detection of coeliac disease in comparison to histology owing to several ideal features such as a high magnification. It also plays a useful role in detecting complications in patients with refractory coeliac disease. Several studies have been carried out on transforming images obtained from small bowel capsule endoscopy to enable the automated detection of features related to coeliac disease. This

Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem connective tissue disorder. Radiology plays an integral part in its management, guiding the clinician concerning the onset and severity of visceral involvement. After skin involvement, the gastrointestinal tract is the most commonly affected system; contrast radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) play a role in diagnosis. Non-specific interstitial pneumonia is the most frequent respiratory disease and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) is the cornerstone of management. In common with other rheumatic disorders, the role of cardiac MRI is expan
