Meaning-making processes among older adults with life-limiting conditions: an integrative review.

OBJECTIVES: Examine how older adults with life-limiting conditions engage in meaning-making for coping and growth, and how individual needs and attributes shape these processes. METHOD: An integrative review across health and psychosocial disciplines was conducted, incorporating qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method, and theoretical literature. Fifty-eight peer-reviewed records were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Four interrelated themes were identified: (1) adjusting global meaning (e.g. core beliefs and purpose) helped buffer distress by aligning it with situational

Physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity: a narrative review.

Physical-psychological-cognitive multimorbidity (PPC-MM) is a distinct phenotype in older adults, defined as the coexistence of chronic physical conditions, psychological disorders, and cognitive impairment. When all three domains are present, the adverse impact on patients may be greater than that associated with single diseases or physical multimorbidity alone. This review delineates operational definitions of PPC-MM across major cohort studies, summarizes global epidemiological characteristics, and synthesizes evidence on multi-level risk factors. Chinese older adults have a PPC-MM prevalen

From Surgery to Strength: The Case for Mental Health Integration in Ileostomy Care.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Ileostomy, a surgical intervention required for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), colorectal cancer, trauma, and sepsis, can be a transformative intervention and imposes substantial physical and psychological challenges on patients. While the physical aspects of ileostomy care are well addressed, the psychological burden-marked by anxiety, depression, and diminished quality of life-remains underrecognized in clinical practice. This perspective article underscores the critical role of mental health in ileostomy recovery, highlighting variations in psychological distress and r

Gliotransmission in physiologic and pathologic conditions.

This chapter explores the roles of gliotransmission in physiologic and pathologic conditions, including psychiatric and neurologic disorders. Gliotransmission, facilitated by astrocytes through the release of gliotransmitters such as glutamate, d-serine, and GABA, regulates neuronal activity and synaptic transmission. Under physiologic conditions, astrocytic gliotransmission maintains the balance of tonic excitation and inhibition, influencing synaptic plasticity and cognitive functions. In psychiatric disorders, the chapter examines how dysregulated gliotransmission contributes to major depre

Womb for debate: the complexities of early-age hysterectomies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hysterectomy remains one of the most performed gynecologic procedures, yet its application in young and nulliparous individuals raises complex ethical, medical, and psychosocial considerations. As early detection of gynecologic conditions improves, requests for hysterectomy at younger ages may increase. This review examines the current literature on the morbidity, quality of life, psychological impact, and social implications of hysterectomy in younger patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Research indicates both benefits and risks associated with early-age hysterectomy. While it prov

Exploring the Association Between Problematic Internet Use, Internet Gaming Disorder in Adolescents with ADHD: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Adolescents with ADHD have an elevated risk of developing Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD), a condition involving excessive gaming that disrupts daily life. IGD is linked to traits such as low frustration tolerance and sensation-seeking, with comorbid conditions like anxiety and depression further increasing vulnerability. Gaming frequently serves as a coping strategy due to emotional regulation difficulties. The dynamics within family units

Necessary conditions for the future consideration of vaccine certificates.

Vaccine certificates were deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic to enable the partial restoration of social and economic activities whilst protecting the public's health. Despite widespread adoption, their use was (and remains) controversial, especially because of concerns regarding their impact on liberty. Getting clarity on the conditions under which vaccine certificates should and should not be considered is critical as the world prepares for future infectious disease threats, including those that may differ substantially from the COVID-19 pandemic. To this end, we offer a framework which a

Implementation outcomes of the waves for change community-based task-shared prevention intervention for adolescent mental health in South Africa.

Adolescents face increased vulnerability to mental health conditions, particularly when exposed to multidimensional poverty and trauma and pronounced treatment gaps. Waves for Change, a Sport for Development (SfD) intervention, employs task-sharing through its '5-Pillar Method' to build resilience and prevent mental health conditions among at-risk adolescents in South Africa. This study assessed the implementation outcomes of this Method using a mixed-methods design, incorporating interviews, focus groups, self-report questionnaires, document reviews and routine site assessments, with 69 stake

Predicting emergency department visits for non-traumatic dental-related conditions among Medicaid beneficiaries.

Patients who use the emergency department (ED) for non-traumatic dental-related conditions are likely to return for multiple visits, accounting for a disproportionate share of healthcare cost. Reliance on the ED for receiving dental care continues to rise, particularly among Medicaid beneficiaries. We sought to predict future "ED users" for non-traumatic dental-related conditions using machine learning algorithms and identify associated risk factors to help Medicaid outreach programs better target populations in most need of improvement in access to dental care. Among 6.4 million Medicaid bene

The National Prevalence of Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Their Associations With Health Conditions Among General Junior High School Students in China: Findings From the China Education Panel Survey.

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) remain poorly understood in adolescents, particularly in middle-income countries like China. To assess NDDs prevalence and their associations with health conditions among Chinese general junior high school students, data from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS, 2013-2015) were used. A total of 8324 junior high school students were included. Validated questionnaires and tests assessed NDDs (autism spectrum disorder [ASD], language disorder [LD], and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD]) and health conditions (physical health through overweight/

Choosing Your "Healthiest" Embryo After Dobbs: Polygenic Screening and Distinctive Challenges for Truth in Advertising and Informed Consent.

Polygenic embryo screening ("PES") analyzes embryos for hundreds or thousands of genomic loci to generate risk scores that estimate genetic susceptibility to conditions and traits compared to the general population. The technology is commercially marketed directly to consumers. Companies focus mostly on medical conditions, sometimes in ways that oversell its advantages and efficacy, encouraging fertility patients to "choose your healthiest embryo" and "protect your future child from genetic risks." The advertising of PES trades on norms of children's health and good parenting and reinforces th

Increased cardiac vagal tone in childhood-only, adolescent-only, and persistently antisocial teenagers: the mediating role of low heart rate.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac vagal tone is an indicator of parasympathetic nervous system functioning, and there is increasing interest in its relation to antisocial behavior. It is unclear however whether antisocial individuals are characterized by increased or decreased vagal tone, and whether increased vagal tone is the source of the low heart rate frequently reported in antisocial populations. METHODS: Participants consisted of four groups of community-dwelling adolescent boys aged 15.7 years: (1) controls, (2) childhood-only antisocial, (3) adolescent-only antisocial, and (4) persistently antisoc

Factors Associated with Dietary Diversity in Community-Dwelling Brazilian Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Older populations are at high risk of nutritional inadequacy and monotonous diets, and assessing dietary diversity can be a practical measure to indicate groups at nutritional risk. We aimed to explore the dietary diversity of older adults enrolled in primary health care services in Brazil and to evaluate its associated factors. METHODOLOGY: In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the dietary diversity score (DDS) of 581 participants (≥60 years) registered in primary care services. All foods mentioned in a 24 h food recall were classified into 10 groups, and factors associated

Altered Purinergic Signaling in Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Focus on P2 Receptors.

With the umbrella term 'neurodevelopmental disorders' (NDDs) we refer to a plethora of congenital pathological conditions generally connected with cognitive, social behavior, and sensory/motor alterations. Among the possible causes, gestational and perinatal insults have been demonstrated to interfere with the physiological processes necessary for the proper development of fetal brain cytoarchitecture and functionality. In recent years, several genetic disorders caused by mutations in key enzymes involved in purine metabolism have been associated with autism-like behavioral outcomes. Further a

The impact of climate change related extreme weather events on people with pre-existing disabilities and chronic conditions: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: People with disabilities experience a disproportionate impact of extreme weather events and there is a critical need to better understand the impact that climate change has for them. Most previous reviews focus on the risk of acquiring a new disability or injury after a climate-related event and not the impact on people with pre-existing disabilities or chronic conditions, which is the purpose of this study. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review while searching seven international databases that identified 45 studies meeting our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: The studies included in
