This article seeks to address this gap by exploring issues relevant to the nursing care of the older transgendered adult. The specific topics covered include social support, abuse and neglect, medical concerns, and access to medical care. Resources for the transgendered older adult also are included. Statewide study of the direct support staff workforce.

Issues of recruitment and retention related to the direct support staff and how these issues affect the lives of people with developmental disabilities were investigated. Major findings included the following: (a) High direct support staff turnover and vacancy rates have negative consequences for many people who receive supports. (b) Direct support staff provide a vast array of services and have numerous job titles and job descriptions. Comorbidity of late life depression: an opportunity for research on mechanisms and treatment.

Late life depression principally affects individuals with other medical and psychosocial problems, including cognitive dysfunction, disability, medical illnesses, and social isolation. The clinical associations of late life depression have guided the development of hypotheses on mechanisms predisposing, initiating, and perpetuating specific mood syndromes. Comorbidity studies have demonstrated a relationship between frontostriatal impairment and late life depression. Further research has the potential to identify dysfunctions of specific frontostriatal systems critical for antidepressant respo

New approaches to social and economic research on schistosomiasis in TDR (Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases).

This paper describes new approaches to social and economic research being developed by the Social and Economic Research component of the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases of the World Health Organization. One of these is a study to assess the possibility of identifying high risk communities for urinary schistosomiasis through a "mailed" questionnaire approach distributed through an existing administrative system, thereby eliminating the need for face-to-face interviews by the research or disease control team. This approach, developed by the Swiss Tropical Institu

Informal caring networks among Chinese elderly with disabilities in Hong Kong.

Community care has been a major guiding policy in developing services for the elderly in Hong Kong. It has been assumed that Chinese families tend to have a large caring network to render care in the community. However, in a survey conducted in early 1991, it was found that such caring networks for disabled elderly people were very small and inconsequential. Quite a high proportion of Chinese disabled elderly are living alone in the community, and have a small network for emotional support. Effective measures to promote family care of disabled elderly people are discussed. Two pathways for int

Predicting and understanding developmental delay of children of adolescent mothers: a multidimensional approach.

Divergent literatures on potential relationships among psychological, biological, and contextual factors that may contribute to mental retardation and other types of developmental delay in the children of adolescent mothers were reviewed. A linear model was proposed to describe the direct and indirect effects of learning ability, maternal health, social support, personal adjustment, cognitive readiness for parenting, and infant characteristics on adolescent parenting and child development. Because the validity of the model can be determined through the use of causal modeling (LISREL), it holds…

Life events, familial stress, and coping in the developmental course of schizophrenia.

Recent studies have isolated some socioenvironmental factors that seem to predict the onset of schizophrenic episodes in vulnerable persons. In particular, stressful life events have been found to cluster in the 3- to 4- week period preceding a schizophrenic episode in some patients. Many persons with a schizophrenic disorder also seem to contribute to additional stressful life change events--for example, by high geographic mobility--thereby playing an active role in precipitating the onset of illness episodes. Within the family environment, hostile, critical, and emotionally overinvolved atti

The Role of Self-reports and Behavioral Measures of Interpretation Biases in Children with Varying Levels of Anxiety.

We investigated the role of self-reports and behavioral measures of interpretation biases and their content-specificity in children with varying levels of spider fear and/or social anxiety. In total, 141 selected children from a community sample completed an interpretation bias task with scenarios that were related to either spider threat or social threat. Specific interpretation biases were found; only spider-related interpretation bias and self-reported spider fear predicted unique variance in avoidance behavior on the Behavior Avoidance Task for spiders. Likewise, only social-threat related

Normative data and clinical usability of the brief examination of social abilities: a novel screening test for social cognition.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition impairments are common across neurological and psychiatric conditions and are associated with poor functional outcomes, yet their systematic assessment in routine clinical practice remains limited. This study aimed to introduce a novel screening battery for social cognition, the Brief Examination of Social Abilities (BE-Social), to provide Italian normative data and evidence on its clinical usability. METHODS: The BE-Social assesses various socio-cognitive abilities (i.e., social perception, Theory of Mind (ToM), empathy, and social norm understanding) through sev

The Representation of Wellness Programs in Plastic Surgery Residency.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery residency comprises a significant portion of early adulthood. The difficulties of residency are well documented, particularly with the impact on wellness and risk of burnout. Structured wellness programs, mentorship, social support, and autonomy can decrease residency burnout. This study looked at how plastic surgery program websites and GME websites represent wellness and support programs between both integrated and independent plastic surgery residencies. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of US plastic surgery residency programs was performed during the month o…
