BACKGROUND: Obesity in the United States disproportionately affects children with disabilities, yet little is known about how their obesity rates change over time or differ across disability subgroups.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined changes in obesity rates in two nationally representative cohorts of children from kindergarten to grade five. Obesity rates were further disaggregated for four less examined disability subgroups: speech or language impairment (SLI), specific learning disability (SLD), intellectual disability (ID), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS: Data from the Early

OBJECTIVE: (1) To study the neuropsychological and psychopathological profile in myoclonus-dystonia (M-D) patients with and without a mutation in the DYT11 gene. (2) To explore whether cognitive and psychiatric impairments are related to severity and duration of motor symptoms. Herewith, this study may help to clarify whether neuropsychological and psychiatric symptoms are associated with the DYT11 mutation or are secondary to the burden of motor impairments that originated in early childhood.
METHODS: Extensive batteries of neuropsychological tests and psychiatric questionnaires were adminis

This article presents the author's personal experiences in eating again after becoming a laryngectomee. He was diagnosed with hypopharyngeal carcinoma and underwent total laryngectomy with a free flap reconstruction. The personal story is told in the hope that nutritionists and other health care providers will realize the difficult challenges in obtaining adequate nutrition that a patient diagnosed with cancer who undergoes laryngectomy must face. These include the effects of radiation treatment and surgery, which create functional and anatomical changes that make swallowing difficult.

The authors describe a 38-year-old man who presented with hypernasality, perioral and acroparesthesia, dyspnea, and dysphagia. Further evaluation revealed a diagnosis of Miller-Fisher syndrome (MFS). MFS is a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome previously described in neurology and critical care journals; however, there is a paucity of work concerning this disease in the otolaryngology literature. An acute change in voice usually occurs secondary to inflammatory processes as seen after intubation and infection, but can occur as part of a more complex disease entity such as Guillain-Barré or Mil

A computer-assisted language intervention, Fast ForWord-Language (FFW-L), was tested at a rural Nevada center in a group of children (Grades 2-12) referred by parents and teachers to assess enhancement of language skills. Given conflicting results from previous studies, language scores were measured using Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals, Third Edition (CELF-3) before and after the FFW-L intervention. 58 children's CELF-3 postintervention scores were adjusted for age-specific expected changes and compared with pretest scores. Adjusted scores increased in both receptive and expressi

Opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome (OMS) in children is a rare neurological condition with opsoclonus, myoclonus, ataxia and irritability in the first 2 years of life. It can be idiopathic, parainfectious, or paraneoplastic with tumours of the neural crest. Few studies of long-term follow-up after OMS have been published. We investigated the motor, cognitive and behavioural outcome of ten patients (eight girls and two boys) seen between 1987 and 2002. We reviewed the records and reassessed the patients. A ganglioneuroma was found in one patient and a neuroblastoma in another. Tumour resection did n

Tourette syndrome is characterized by motor and vocal tics, frequently accompanied by attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, coprolalia, aggressive or self-injurious behavior, and learning disabilities. We investigated the height distribution and clinical characteristics of 38 consecutive patients with Tourette syndrome. Seventeen patients with Tourette syndrome (44.7%) were in the lower height quartile versus 25% from a control group of 44 patients with ADHD (P <.05). The mean standard deviation score differential (patient height - [target height]) was

OBJECTIVE: Posteroventral pallidotomy (PVP) has proved to be an effective method for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. However, data on bilateral procedures are still limited. To assess the effects of bilateral globus pallidus (GPi) lesion and to compare it with a combination of unilateral GPi lesion plus contralateral GPi stimulation (PVP+PVS), an open blind randomised trial was designed.
METHODS: A prospective series of patients with severe Parkinson's disease refractory to medical treatment, and severe drug induced dyskinesias, were randomised either to simultaneous bilateral PVP or si

Referrals from preschool medical examinations were followed up for two years to assess attendance rate, waiting time for appointment, appropriateness of the referral, the diagnosis and management of the condition. Altogether 184 children were referrals for ophthalmology, 285 for audiology, and 195 for speech therapy. The median waiting time for an appointment was 46 days in ophthalmology, 175 days in audiology, and 83 days in speech therapy. The poorest attendance rate was identified in speech therapy (75%). Approximately 60% of examined children had a justified referral to ophthalmology and 2

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is associated with several issues (psychiatric and neurological disorders, neurodevelopmental difficulties, malnutrition…) which are also risk factors for cognitive disorders. However, little is known about the relationship between the cognition of homeless people and these eventual explicative etiologies. The aim of this work is to complete the results of Depp et al. about cognition in homelessness by proposing a systematic review of the neuropsychological disorders of homeless people associated with an analysis of the etiologies likely to explain these disorders.

Change in oral function was evaluated longitudinally in elderly persons participating in an Exercises for Healthy Oral Function program implemented as part of the Long-Term Care Prevention Project. The participants comprised high-risk and healthy persons aged 65 yr or over. A questionnaire was used to classify them into two groups ('every day or sometimes' or 'rarely') at the end of the study for a comparison of change in repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST) scores and oral diadochokinesis between 3 time points: at before, at immediately after, and at 1 yr after completion of the program.

MYT1L-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (MYT1L-NDD) is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by intellectual disability, global developmental delay, autism, and obesity. Despite growing recognition, prospective and systematic clinical phenotyping remains limited. Here, we present an exploratory analysis of data from 25 individuals with MYT1L-NDD enrolled in the Brain Gene Registry (BGR), a national platform integrating genetic, neurobehavioral, and clinical data. Neurobehavioral assessments were conducted using the Rapid Neurobehavioral Assessment Protocol (RNAP), including virtua

Background/Objectives: Down Syndrome (DS) is frequently associated with oral-motor dysmorphologies, like oral hypotonia, tongue protrusion, short palate, and malocclusion, compromising the oral functions of sucking, chewing, swallowing, and speech production. Therapeutic interventions with stimulating palatal plates (SPP) have been proposed to prevent and improve oral-motor dysmorphologies in DS. This study proposes a new digital workflow for the manufacturing and use of a modified SPP. Methods: We report the application of the new workflow to five clinical cases, all infants with DS showing o

BACKGROUND: Complex motor stereotypies (CMS) are repetitive movements classified into "primary" for typically developing individuals and "secondary" for those with other neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders. This study evaluated children diagnosed with primary CMS to assess motor stereotypy outcomes, sex-related differences, and early neurodevelopmental histories that play a key role in diagnostic classification.
METHODS: Sixty-five healthy participants diagnosed with pCMS (44 males, 21 females), mean age 9.1 ± 3.6 years (range 3-17 years), completed follow-up telephone interviews and

It is known that various infections can lead to neuroinflammation and parkinsonism. Parkinsonism encompasses a range of neurodegenerative disorders that can present with symptoms like tremors or muscle rigidity. The following case describes a rare instance of parkinsonism that was induced by Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (Rickettsia rickettsii). While parkinsonism has been found to be caused by certain viruses, it is uncommon for Rickettsial infections to be the inciting agent. This case sheds light on the evidence-based management of Rickettsia-induced parkinsonism (RIP) and movement disorders

BACKGROUND: Developmental language disorders (DLDs) are common neurodevelopmental conditions, affecting approximately 7-10% of children, with significant impacts on communication, academic achievement, and social integration. While genetic factors are known contributors, the underlying genomic architecture and biological pathways remain incompletely understood. This analysis explores key genomic biomarkers of DLD and investigates their functional interactions.
METHODS: We conducted an integrative genomic analysis combining multiple data-driven approaches. Using the Open Targets platform, we c

BACKGROUND: The Peripheral Myelin Protein 22 (PMP22) gene plays a central role in peripheral nerve myelination, and dosage alterations (deletion, duplication, or point mutation) are established causes of hereditary neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1 A (CMT1A), CMT1E, and Hereditary Neuropathy with Liability to Pressure Palsies (HNPP). However, its potential contribution to atypical developmental motor phenotypes such as persistent toe-walking (PTW) has not been systematically explored.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the phenotypic spectrum of pediatric PMP22 variant carriers
