OBJECTIVES: Traumatically experienced childbirth can lead to serious psychological disturbances postpartum. Dependent upon objective and subjective factors, some women may even develop the symptomatology of a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of a pilot study was the evaluation of the frequency of traumatically experienced childbirth, of the effects of these traumatic experiences and possible risk factors for the development of PTSD.
STUDY DESIGN: 976 women, who had given birth at the Bonn University Women's Hospital during 1997/1998, were retrospectively questioned regarding thei

Multiple approaches to characterization of TTM have been developed, including categoric definitions and dimensional considerations. When TTM is viewed in the context of other disorders with common comorbidities and overlapping similar phenomenologies, such as OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, skin picking, TS, and olfactory reference syndrome, clinical approaches to assessment and differential diagnosis are more complex. This article presents a general overview of TTM included as a background for a heuristic clinical framework for assessing obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders. A comprehensive

This paper presents a literature review of epidemiological data relevant to traffic accidents of children, including their personality and behavioral predisposition, social factors, association with risk taking behavior, rehabilitation, and incidence of post traumatic stress syndrome. The need for prospective studies of psychiatric sequelae of such accidents is highlighted. Three case vignettes are presented.

UNLABELLED: From the subway driver's point of view, a "person under train" (PUT) incident is a serious life event. This study focuses on the 1-year consequences of such events. Follow-up was made 3 weeks, 3 months, and 1 year after the event. Forty consecutive PUT subway drivers were followed. For each PUT driver, a control driver matched with regard to gender, age, and country of birth was followed at identical intervals.
MAIN RESULTS: The PUT group had significantly more sick days during the interval from the event to 3 weeks later. During the period 3 weeks to 3 months after the event no d

This research examines the DSM-IIIR criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study questions whether the psychiatric sequelae resulting from exposure to extraordinary traumatic events (stressor criterion A) do in fact differ from the sequelae resulting from exposure to more common yet stressful life experiences. The study also examines whether PTSD sequelae (criteria B-D) accurately describe the responses of victims even of extreme events fitting the DSM-III-R definition of stressor. The study included data from both St Louis victims exposed to floods and/or unsafe dioxin levels,

OBJECTIVES: Health-care workers (HCW) exposed to COVID-19 are at risk of experiencing psychological distress. Although several cross-sectional studies have been carried out, a longitudinal perspective is needed to better understand the evolution of psychological distress indicators within this population. The objectives of this study were to assess the evolution of psychological distress and to identify psychological distress trajectories of Canadian HCW during and after the first wave of COVID-19.
METHOD: This prospective cohort study was conducted from May 8 to September 4, 2020, and includ

OBJECTIVE: This case report explores the efficacy of intravenous Ketamine in treating active suicidal ideation in a 24-year-old female with comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and functional neurological disorder (FND).
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient, with a history of multiple suicide attempts and treatment-resistant MDD, demonstrated significant improvement following nine intravenous ketamine sessions. The Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale score decreased from 45 to 11, accompanied by sustained reducti

BACKGROUND: Previous observational clinical research has suggested a link between micronutrients and psychiatric conditions. However, the causal relationship between these nutrients and mental health disorders remains uncertain. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by employing a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis on pooled data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS), aiming to explore the potential causal associations between 20 prevalent micronutrients and 7 common psychiatric disorders.
METHODS: A collection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with 20 mi

The current study of 371 community mental health clients with severe mental illness examined differences in frequency of common lifetime trauma and other stressful events in clients with schizophrenia spectrum and major mood disorders in order to gauge the unique variance in posttraumatic stress symptoms explained by trauma/stressful events when controlling for other psychiatric measures. The overwhelming majority (88.1%) of these clients reported at least one stressful/traumatic event in their lifetime with a median of seven such events. Regression modeling revealed that physical abuse was un

Although peritraumatic dissociation and other subjective peritraumatic reactions, such as emotional distress and arousal, have been shown to affect the relationship between a traumatic event and the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults, systematic studies with youth have not been done. In a mixed ethnic and racial sample of 90 psychiatrically impaired youth (ages 10-18, 56% boys), we investigated the contributions of peritraumatic dissociation, emotional distress, and arousal to current PTSD severity after accounting for the effects of gender, trauma history, trait dis

BACKGROUND: Fear circuitry disorders purportedly include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobia. It is proposed that these disorders represent a cluster of anxiety disorders triggered by stressful events and lead to fear conditioning. Elevated heart rate (HR) at the time of an aversive event may reflect strength of the unconditioned response, which may contribute to fear circuitry disorders.
METHOD: This prospective cohort study assessed HR within 48 h of hospital admission in 602 traumatically injured patients, who were assessed

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether abnormal eating behaviors in young women could predict eating disorders after 4 years.
METHOD: 56 women were identified as presenting abnormal eating behaviors in a cross-sectional study (Eating Attitudes Test-26 and Edinburgh Bulimic Investigation Test). They were matched for age and neighborhood to two controls (n = 112). Four years later, they were re-assessed with the two screening questionnaires plus the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 2.1).
RESULTS: Women with abnormal eating behaviors at baseline showed a high probability of present

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently associated with major depressive disorder, and antidepressants have been reported to ameliorate PTSD symptoms in some patients. The present study assessed the number and affinity of platelet imipramine binding sites, as a marker of the serotonin transporter complex, in PTSD male patients (n = 10) before and after phenelzine treatment (30-60 mg/day, for 4 weeks) as well as in comparison to healthy controls (n = 10). In our sample, there was no evidence of a significant difference in the characteristics (Bmax and Kd) of platelet [3H]imipramine b

The reader familiar with the borderline literature may see a correspondence between certain of our MPD/DD Rorschach results and typical borderline characteristics. Most notably, both groups reason and view others in unusual but not psychotic ways and demonstrate certain difficulties in affect integration. On the other hand, the MPD/DD group exhibits many attributes that contradict predictions one would make from a borderline perspective, and which support Kluft's assertion that the majority of these patients have a more complex and structured personality system. Rather than holding oversimplif

Behavioral psychotherapy is probably the treatment of choice for most phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders and plays a lesser role in the management of panic disorder without agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This article discusses treatment goals and strategies for each disorder.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with cognitive deficits in attention, executive control, and memory, although few studies have investigated the relevance of cognitive difficulties for treatment outcomes. We examined whether cognitive functioning and history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) were associated with response to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for PTSD-related sleep problems. In a randomized controlled trial of Imagery Rehearsal (IR) added to components of CBT for Insomnia (IR + cCBT-I) compared to cCBT-I alone for PTSD-related recurrent nightmares, 94 U.S. veter
