Distraction and Desire: Extending the Study of Non-Erotic Thoughts to the South Asian Context.

Non-erotic thoughts (NETs) are intrusive cognitions that interfere with sexual enjoyment and have been linked to sexual dysfunction. Despite recognition that sexuality is culturally rooted, no research has examined whether NETs vary across cultures. We investigated cultural differences in NET frequency, anxiety, and content between South Asian and White women in Canada, the USA, and the UK. Given South Asian sexual norms emphasizing procreative sex within marriage and potential guilt/shame when transgressed, we predicted group differences in culturally relevant NET categories. We recruited two

Distinct social pathways in the links between pain interference and psychological function in youth with chronic pain.

Evidence suggests that pain interference is linked to depression and anxiety in youth with chronic pain, yet the contributions of the social environment to these associations remain unclear. Guided by the Stress-Buffering Model of Social Support, this study tested theory-driven mediation and moderation models to examine whether peer relationships and bullying contribute to or modify concurrent and short-term longitudinal associations between pain interference and psychological function. A cross-sectional sample of 744 youth with chronic pain from the EPIDOL project (61% girls; mean age = 11.9

The indirect effect of perfectionism between anxiety, self-esteem, aesthetic pressure, and eating disorder risk in competitive figure skaters.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are highly prevalent in aesthetic sports, where body weight and physical appearance are central to performance. In figure skating, aesthetic pressure from the competition uniform, along with psychological factors such as perfectionism, anxiety, and self-esteem, may increase the risk of eating disorder. This study examined the relationships between these variables and eating disorder risk among competitive figure skaters, and tested whether self-esteem, aesthetic pressure, and anxiety were indirectly associated with eating disorder risk through perfectionism. Sailing toward healing. A combined group intervention to improve well-being in breast cancer survivors: a brief report study.

Breast cancer survivors often face persistent physical and emotional challenges. Evidence suggests that physical exercise and group psychological interventions can improve well-being and illness adjustment. This pilot study examined the effectiveness of a combined intervention delivered in a natural environment. Sixty female breast cancer survivors (Mage = 51.0; SD = 5.5) participated in a 1-week program consisting of daily sailing lessons and group psychological sessions designed to address cancer-related issues. Assessments were conducted 1 week before and 1 week after the intervention using

Feasibility of machine learning classification of depression and anxiety symptoms among college students using 3D gait and sit-to-walk biomechanics.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common and burdensome. Objective movement assessment may complement questionnaires by providing low burden screening signals. RESEARCH QUESTION: Can 3D gait and sit-to-walk biomechanics classify elevated depression and anxiety symptoms, and which movement yields better performance with few features? METHODS: Thirty young adults completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), then performed gait and sit-to-walk in a laboratory with a sixteen camera optoelectronic motion capture s

Children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders have high relative leptin levels upon adjustment for sex, BMI, and pubertal status.

The relationship between leptin levels and psychiatric disorders has been studied more extensively in adults than in children and adolescents. However, the results are conflicting. We investigated serum leptin levels in children and adolescents (11 to 18.9 years) with psychiatric disorders (n = 363). Absolute and relative (body-mass-index (BMI)-, sex- and pubertal-stage-adjusted z-scores using reference values of healthy children and adolescents) leptin levels of different patient groups according to diagnosis were compared. The association between leptin levels and depression (Beck Depression

Evidence accumulation during self-referential social processing captures social functioning and psychopathology dimensions in a transdiagnostic sample.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis, social anxiety, and autism are clinical constructs that share important phenotypic features, particularly social dysfunction. A critical determinant of social functioning is an individual's ability to recognize when social cues, such as eye gaze, are meant for them. Emerging computational modeling data in psychosis suggest that altered gaze perception stems from deficits in evidence accumulation - the process of gathering and integrating information - when processing social cues. We investigated whether aberrant evidence accumulation during gaze perception is associated

Early life predictors of subjective cognitive function in older age: Emerging longitudinal associations over six decades.

OBJECTIVES: Self-rated memory impairment is common in older age and has been related to objective cognitive decline and dementia. Recently, there has been growing interest in early-life predictors of late-life cognition, but research has been limited due to the absence of data spanning the entire lifespan. The present study investigated whether psychological health, social well-being, socioeconomic status (SES), and cognitive abilities at age 10 and 13 predicted subjective memory almost six decades later. METHODS: Psychological health, social well-being, SES, and cognitive abilities were meas

Arousal grows up, arousal goes down. Emotion regulation, trait anxiety, rumination and worry as predictors of recovery time after mental imagery.

BACKGROUND: One key ingredient for guided imagery interventions' effectiveness is their capacity to increase emotional arousal. However, individual responses vary, as some people can have negative experiences that undermine treatment adherence or effectiveness. Research is needed to understand predictors of negative reactions to experiencing negative events during imagery. One idea suggests that some individuals struggle to return to baseline, making the experience unpleasant or distressing. Which predictors contribute to slower recovery after imagery of negative events? AIMS AND HYPOTHESIS:

Slc26a9 promotes the perineural invasion of pancreatic cancer in mice.

Perineural invasion (PNI) is a pivotal prognostic factor in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), associated with aggressive tumor behavior and poor patient outcomes. This study investigated the role of Slc26a9 in regulating peripheral nerve invasion in pancreatic cancer. Bioinformatic analysis of GEO datasets showed markedly higher Slc26a9 expression in PNI-positive patients than in those without PNI. A PDAC model was established by implanting Panc02-luc cells into C57BL/6 mice. Abdominal mechanical hyperalgesia, hunching behavior, and anxiety-like behaviors were assessed using von Frey, h

Hyperventilation Syndrome in a Child: Electrolyte Disturbances and Cardiac Involvement in Anxiety-Related Presentations.

Background: Hyperventilation Syndrome (HVS) is a well-recognized physiological consequence of acute anxiety, often resulting in respiratory alkalosis and subsequent electrolyte imbalances. Among these, a reduction in ionized calcium levels can lead to neuromuscular irritability and electrocardiographic abnormalities such as QTc prolongation. Although well-documented in specific settings, including autism spectrum disorders and drug-induced crises, such complications are rarely described in otherwise healthy pediatric patients presenting with isolated anxiety episodes. This report aims to raise

Thyroid hormone deficiency affects anxiety-related behaviors and expression of hippocampal glutamate transporters in male congenital hypothyroid rat offspring.

Thyroid hormones are crucial for brain development and their deficiency during fetal and postnatal periods can lead to mood and cognitive disorders. We aimed to examine the consequences of thyroid hormone deficiency on anxiety-related behaviors and protein expression of hippocampal glutamate transporters in congenital hypothyroid male offspring rats. Possible beneficial effects of treadmill exercise have also been examined. Congenital hypothyroidism was induced by adding propylthiouracil (PTU) to drinking water of pregnant Wistar rats from gestational day 6 until the end of the weaning period

Resting-state amygdala subregion and precuneus connectivity provide evidence for a dimensional approach to studying social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent and disabling mental health condition, characterized by excessive fear and anxiety in social situations. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigms have been increasingly used to understand the neurobiological underpinnings of SAD in the absence of threat-related stimuli. Previous studies have primarily focused on the role of the amygdala in SAD. However, the amygdala consists of functionally and structurally distinct subregions, and recent studies have highlighted the importance of investigating the role of these subregion
