[Abdominal tuberculosis in CT imaging].

According to WHO declaration, tuberculosis is considered the world health danger. Almost 1% of world population is infected by tuberculosis every year and up to 3 millions of new cases are registered in the south-east Asia only. Prevalence of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis is rising, which is probably caused by the rising prevalence of AIDS. Fifty eight years old man, the immigrant from south-east Asia was accepted in a subileous state at the department of Internal medicine. He had suffered for longer period from the torpidness, tabescence and other non-specific symptoms. Among results of labora

Heparin-binding hemagglutinin, from an extrapulmonary dissemination factor to a powerful diagnostic and protective antigen against tuberculosis.

Interactions of Mycobacterium tuberculosis with macrophages have long been recognized to be crucial to the pathogenesis of tuberculosis. The role of non-phagocytic cells is less well known. We have discovered a M. tuberculosis surface protein that interacts specifically with non-phagocytic cells, expresses hemagglutination activity and binds to sulfated glycoconjugates. It is therefore called heparin-binding hemagglutinin (HBHA). HBHA-deficient M. tuberculosis mutant strains are significantly impaired in their ability to disseminate from the lungs to other tissues, suggesting that the interact

Pediatric tuberculosis in Alberta First Nations (1991-2000): outbreaks and the protective effect of bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine.

BACKGROUND: The tuberculosis control strategy of vaccinating First Nations newborns with BCG (bacille Calmette-Guerin) is currently undergoing re-evaluation in Canada. Review of recent pediatric tuberculosis morbidity could inform this re-evaluation. METHODS: Potential source cases and pediatric cases of tuberculosis from Alberta First Nations were identified over the 10 years 1991-2000. The distribution of pediatric disease was described. The effect of BCG on tuberculosis morbidity in two large outbreaks was determined. RESULTS: A total of 57 potential source cases and 41 pediatric cases of

Clinical concentrations of thioridazine kill intracellular multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

The phenothiazines chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TZ) have equal in vitro activities against antibiotic-sensitive and -resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These compounds have not been used as anti-M. tuberculosis agents because their in vitro activities take place at concentrations which are beyond those that are clinically achievable. In addition, chronic administration of CPZ produces frequent severe side effects. Because CPZ has been shown to enhance the killing of intracellular M. tuberculosis at concentrations in the medium that are clinically relevant, we have investigated whe

[Endobronchial tuberculosis presenting as an obstructive tumor in an HIV-1-positive patient. Apropos of a case and review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: A rare case report of endobronchial tuberculosis is reported in an HIV-1 positive patient of black African origin. EXEGESIS: A 38-year-old woman of Guinean origin, HIV-1 positive, presented with persistent right upper lobe opacity at chest X-ray. Computerized tomography of the chest after injection confirmed this finding and revealed right laterotracheal and Barety space adenopathy. Investigations of acid-fast bacilli in the biological media were negative. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy showed endobronchial lesion on the wall of the ventral part of the right upper lobe, which had the a

The role of neutrophil response in lung damage and post-tuberculosis lung disease: a translational narrative review.

It is estimated that more than 150 million individuals alive in 2020 had survived tuberculosis (TB). A portion of this large population continues to experience chronic respiratory abnormalities, with or without symptoms, due to previous active pulmonary TB. This condition known as Post-TB Lung Disease (PTLD), involves a complex interaction between pathogen, host and environmental factors. These interactions are believed to drive a hyperinflammatory process in the lungs during active TB, resulting in tissue damage, which may lead to radiological sequelae, impaired pulmonary function, clinical s

Surgical resection is sufficient for incidentally discovered solitary pulmonary nodule caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria in asymptomatic patients.

Incidentally discovered solitary pulmonary nodules (SPN) caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is uncommon, and its optimal treatment strategy remains uncertain. This cohort study determined the clinical characteristics and outcome of asymptomatic patients with NTM-SPN after surgical resection. Resected SPNs with culture-positive for NTM in six hospitals in Taiwan during January, 2010 to January, 2017 were identified. Asymptomatic patients without a history of NTM-pulmonary disease (PD) or same NTM species isolated from the respiratory samples were selected. All were followed until May 1

Bronchial anthracofibrosis: an emerging pulmonary disease due to biomass fuel exposure.

OBJECTIVES: 1) To document current knowledge of bronchial anthracofibrosis (BAF), an emerging pulmonary disease recognised just over a decade ago; 2) to highlight the demographic profile, and clinical, radiological and bronchoscopic features peculiar to BAF; and 3) to discuss the postulated causes and clinical conditions associated with BAF, emphasising the need to characterise and recognise it as a distinct clinical disorder. DATA SOURCES: An extensive search of the literature was performed in Medline/PubMed and other databases with key terms 'anthracosis', 'biomass fuels', 'bronchial anthra

Identification of nontuberculous mycobacterial infection by IS6110 and hsp65 gene analysis on lung tissues.

The clinical, histologic, and radiographic presentations of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease are usually indistinguishable from those of reactivated pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), so it remains a great challenge for the clinician to make treatment decisions for patients with old TB and a positive culture result for NTM. This study investigated whether the mycobacterial specific heat shock protein 65 (hsp65) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-specific IS6110 gene would present in pulmonary lesions of patients with NTM pulmonary infection. Formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded (FFP

Pathways to Diagnose Infectious Pulmonary Vascular Disease in Rural Mozambique.

Background: Schistosomiasis, HIV, and tuberculosis frequently lead to pulmonary hypertension in low- and middle-income countries. Lack of specific testing and limited access to right heart catheterization hamper confirmation of the etiology of pulmonary hypertension due to schistosomiasis. In addition, low health literacy and poor socioeconomic status further compromise prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. Clinical algorithms for early screening, including hand-held echocardiography and point-of-care testing performed by non-specialists, are needed in rural Sub-Saharan Africa to decentr

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in an adult with Kartagener syndrome.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a pulmonary disorder resulting from immune responses directed against inhaled Aspergillus fumigatus antigens. It manifests with poorly controlled asthma, fleeting pulmonary opacities and structural lung damage in the form of bronchiectasis. Initially defined in individuals suffering from bronchial asthma and cystic fibrosis, it has also been described in patients with other structural lung disorders such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary tuberculosis, idiopathic bronchiectasis and others. Kartagener syndrome is a manifestation
