Squamous cells as predictors of bacterial contamination in urine samples.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether squamous cells in urine indicate bacterial contamination. METHODS: We prospectively studied 105 consecutive women who presented to the emergency department with symptoms suggestive of a urinary tract infection. Two urine samples were collected from each woman, a midstream clean-catch (MSCC) sample and a catheterized (CATH) sample. Microscopic urinalyses to assess for squamous cells and urine cultures to assess for bacterial contamination were performed on all samples. Bacterial contamination was defined as growth of fewer than 10,000 colonies of a single

The "well tempered" diuretic renogram: a standard method to examine the asymptomatic neonate with hydronephrosis or hydroureteronephrosis. A report from combined meetings of The Society for Fetal Urology and members of The Pediatric Nuclear Medicine Council--The Society of Nuclear Medicine.

Perinatal hydronephrosis (HN) and hydroureteronephrosis (HUN) are recognized more frequently as the routine use of prenatal ultrasonography increases. The decision-making process for those instances of urinary tract dilatation that require surgical correction and those that do not is based in part on the findings of diuresis renography. The methodology for performing this test has differed among nuclear medicine practitioners and the surgical findings are occasionally discrepant from the diuretic renogram interpretation. Consequently, the Society of Fetal Urology (SFU) and the Pediatric Nuclea

Effects of autonomic blockade on the hypertensive response of the fetus to hyperosmolality.

1. Infusions of hyperosmotic mannitol to the ewe caused a rise in fetal arterial pressure in 17 chronically catheterized fetal sheep aged 120-140 days. The fetal heart slowed in 13 out of 17 of these fetuses. The rise in pressure occurred before there was any rise in fetal urinary osmolality. 2. In seven fetal sheep combined alpha- and beta-adrenoceptor and muscarinic blockade delayed the onset of the rise in blood pressure and no bradycardia was observed. It is concluded that the hypertension was due in part to increased activity of the sympatho-adrenal system, and that any reflex bradycardia

Sacral Neuromodulator Surgery: Is There an Ideal Candidate?

Objectives Sacral neuromodulator implantation (SNM) is an advanced line of treatment for patients with overactive bladder (OAB) or underactive bladder (UAB). The procedure has two steps; patients who respond to temporary SNM proceed to permanent implantation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of SNM in our patient population, as well as to identify potential correlations between patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and procedural outcomes. Additionally, we examined factors that may influence patient-reported satisfaction following SNM implantation. Method

The usefulness of the surgical knowledge and skills acquired via the university curriculum for doctors' medical practice several years after graduation.

BACKGROUND: Teaching surgery during university curriculum comprises transferring theoretical knowledge traditionally and simultaneously acquiring manual skills, i.e., suturing, stitch removal, limb immobilization, catheterization, and assisting operations. Observations of doctors several years after graduation led to the reflection that teachers' ideas about surgical knowledge and skills that are useful in daily practice frequently fail to meet the facts of the case. The objective of this study was to determine which part of the surgical knowledge and skills taught via the university surgical

Restriction of in vivo infection by antifouling coating on urinary catheter with controllable and sustained silver release: a proof of concept study.

BACKGROUND: Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections are among the most common urological infections world-wide. Bacterial biofilms and encrustation cause significant complications in patients with urinary catheters. The objective of the study is to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of an anti-microbial and anti-encrustation silver nanoparticle (AgNP) coating on silicone urinary catheter in two different animal models. METHODS: Antifouling coating (P3) was prepared with alternate layers of polydopamine and AgNP and an outermost antifouling layer. Sixteen C57BL/6 female mice and two fema

[Non-iatrogenic injuries of the ureter].

The increasing number of non-iatrogenic ureteric injuries can be explained by the increasing crime rate in certain large cities and by the performance of intensive car teams, both in civilian practice civil and in a context of war. The discovery of an ureteric injury during salvage laparotomy for vascular or visceral lesions is no longer exceptional. The initial diagnosis is missed in 10 to 20% of cases, due to the absence of any specific clinical signs, as radiological opacification of the urinary tract is rarely performed and the clinical situation is dominated by associated lesions. The tre

The rising threat of antibiotic and multidrug resistance in neonatal urinary tract infections.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTıVE: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the significant causes of sepsis in neonates. Currently, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms have become an increasingly prevalent issue in newborns. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory findings, causative organisms, associated urinary tract anomalies, AMR patterns, and factors influencing the development of MDR in neonatal UTIs. METHODS: Microorganisms in urine cultures obtained through bladder catheterization from neonates were identified, and AMR profiles as well a

Design, Manufacturing and Physicochemical Validation of a New Biodegradable Intraurethral Device for Post-Operative Urethral Stricture Treatment.

Urethral stricture is the narrowing of the urethra caused by the growth of aberrant tissue after an injury. Actual post-operative treatment requires the placement of a Foley catheter for external urinary drainage after surgery. However, it requires a second intervention for removal, and the contact with the external environment and non-biodegradable composition even aggravates urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 7.12% of patients. Thus, we developed a completely biodegradable intraurethral device (BID) as an alternative to catheterization. BID is a continuous-walled hollow tubular stent with ou

Vascular- and nerve-sparing bowel resection for deep endometriosis: A retrospective single-center study.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical management of bowel endometriosis is still controversial. Recently, many authors have pointed out the potential benefits of preserving the superior rectal artery, thus ensuring better perfusion of the anastomosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the complication rate and functional outcomes of a bowel resection technique for deep endometriosis (DE) involving a nerve- and vascular-sparing approach. METHODS: A single-center retrospective study was conducted by enrolling patients who underwent segmental resection of the rectus sigmoid for DE in our department between Se

Nomogram to Predict Risk of Postoperative Urinary Retention in Women Undergoing Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a nomogram that determines an individual's risk of postoperative urinary retention (POUR) following pelvic floor reconstructive surgery. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of women who underwent reconstructive surgery for pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. Short-term POUR was defined as failure of the trial of void (post-void residual >150 mL with a void of >200 mL) on postoperative day one or the need for re-catheterization in the first 2 postoperative days. Potential pre- and intraoperative risk factors for POUR were compared betw
