Aggravation of glaucoma with fluvoxamine.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of aggravation of glaucoma associated with the use of fluvoxamine. CASE SUMMARY: A 66-year-old while woman diagnosed with narrow-angle glaucoma showed an increase in intraocular pressure and experienced orbital pain and blurred vision after the initiation of fluvoxamine for tension-type headache. These symptoms disappeared and intraocular pressure normalized after withdrawal of this drug. DISCUSSION: Aggravation of narrow-angle glaucoma is a well-known adverse effect of tricyclic antidepressants. Because this adverse effect had been rarely reported to date with se

[Ophthalmic complications in the course of opportunistic infections--part I].

One of the most important problem of contemporary medicine appears to be constantly increasing number of patients with opportunistic infections. The situation is mainly due to world epidemic of AIDS. The progress in transplantology, huge number of immunocompromised patients during oncological and hematological treatment as well as prolongation of life time in children with congenital immunodeficiencies are successive conditions for the development of opportunistic infection. Pathogens infecting immunocompromised individuals have very low virulence, but in these persons disease is often very se

Complications of macular hole surgery.

Macular hole is a serious vision-threatening disease for which, until the early 1990s, no effective treatment was available. However, with advanced techniques in microsurgical vitrectomy surgery, effective and successful closure of macular holes now can be obtained. Many complications can occur after any ocular surgery. Some of the specific complications associated with macular hole surgery are RPE alterations, retinal detachments, CME, subretinal neovascular membrane, endophthalmitis, hypopyon, late re-opening of macular holes, increased intraocular pressure, visual field defects, and catarac

Effective treatment with topical cyclosporin A of a patient with Cogan syndrome.

The purpose of this report is to describe the effective treatment of severe anterior segment inflammation due to Cogan syndrome through the use of topical administration of cyclosporin A. A 47-year-old female patient had been experiencing headaches and difficulties with her vision. Subsequent examination revealed the sudden onset of bilateral conjunctival injection and swelling of bilateral auricles. Despite the multiple treatment (systemic and topical corticosteroid and antibiotic therapy), necrotizing scleritis had appeared bilaterally and the scleral wall was thinning. Topical administratio

Discrete nuclear sclerosis in young patients with myopia.

OBJECTIVE: To review a series of young patients with myopia who had a visually disabling cataract. DESIGN: A retrospective review of 12 consecutive patients who had a visually disabling cataract and who were examined at the Cornea Service of the University of Illinois at Chicago. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 44 years (range, 34-54 years). The mean best-corrected visual acuity of the patients was 20/50, and the ocular history of the patients included a progressive decrease in vision. Six patients experienced disabling monocular polyopia. Their presumed diagnoses ranged from kerat

Characteristics of cytomegalovirus retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis is the most common ocular opportunistic infection in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The disease is inexorably progressive when untreated, making early detection and prompt treatment essential for preservation of functional vision. The retinitis tends to be unilateral at presentation but often becomes bilateral as it progresses. Lesions may be unifocal or multifocal and may appear in the posterior retina or peripheral retina. Primary ophthalmoscopic features of CMV retinitis include white granular zones of retinal necrosis, variable degr

Nocardia choroidal abscess.

Nocardia is a Gram positive, aerobic, filamentous branching micro-organism that rarely causes human infection. When infection does occur it usually takes the form of a subcutaneous abscess or a pneumonia-like illness. We describe a case of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia who developed painless loss of vision in the right eye secondary to a choroidal abscess after a prolonged course of treatment on several immunosuppressive agents. The patient also complained of right shoulder pain that was unresponsive to conventional therapy, and had been admitted and treated for several episodes

A study of amblyopia in 18-19 year old males.

During a vision screening of 6,556 National Service pre-enlistees aged 18-19 years at the Medical Classification Centre of Central Manpower Base, 48 subjects were found to have visual acuity of 6/12 or less in one or both eyes in the absence of ocular pathology. The prevalence of amblyopia in this population is 0.73%. Amblyopia was due to anisometropia in 24 cases (50%), strabismus in 9 cases (18.7%), high astigmatism (meridional) in 7 cases (14.5%) and other causes or a combination of factors in 8 cases (16.7%). Strabismic amblyopia is most commonly associated with esotropia. There is a posit

Treatment of carotid-cavernous fistulas with detachable balloon catheter occlusion.

Intravascular occlusion of traumatic carotid cavernous fistulas, originally performed under direct visualization with fascia and/or muscle, has evolved into the use of catheters with pressure-sensitive detachable balloons that can be deflated and repositioned prior to final inflation and separation from the catheter. The balloon is filled with contrast material and can be identified with follow-up x-rays. Proptosis is often relieved immediately after this treatment. Detailed pre- and posttreatment ophthalmic evaluations of three consecutive patients with carotid-cavernous fistulas successfully

Aland eye disease: no albino misrouting.

Electrophysiological studies showed that a patient with Aland eye disease had no misrouting of the optic pathways which is always found in all forms of albinism as a consequence of the retino-geniculate anomaly. Also the spontaneous and optokinetic nystagmus did not resemble that of the large majority of human albinos. The marked asymmetry found in this patient seems to be typical for humans with a defective development of foveal binocular vision. These findings are in agreement with clinical, nystagmographic and EM findings that Aland eye disease is distinct from the Nettleship-Falls type of

Ocular rosacea.

Ocular rosacea was diagnosed in 49 patients. The most common signs and symptoms were foreign body sensation, burning, superficial punctate erosions, chalazia, and belpharitis. Less common but dangerous to the vision was corneal thinning, vascularization, and infiltrates. Three new associated symptoms were found. These were mapdot subepithelial opacities, recurrent erosions, and moderately severe foreign body sensation, pain or burning with minimal associated signs. Of the 49 patients, 37 were treated with 250 mg of oral tetracycline four times a day, which resulted in improvement in almost all

Corneal ulcer development due to sintilimab-anlotinib combination therapy-induced dry eye: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) inhibitors and anti-angiogenic drugs have become a hotspot in research of anti-tumor programs; however, they can also cause some rare drug-related adverse reactions. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) cause adverse reactions in the body, collectively known as immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Ocular side effects can occur in both targeted and immunotherapy patients, including dry eye, blurred vision, uveitis, conjunctivitis, retinopathy, or thyroid eye disease. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing corneal ulcers secondary t

The Clinical and Imaging Profile of Skew Deviation: A Study of 157 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Skew deviation, a vertical misalignment of the eyes caused by a lesion in the vestibulo-ocular pathway, is a common manifestation of brainstem dysfunction, yet comprehensive information about its clinical profile is lacking. The aim of this study was to document presenting symptoms, causes, ocular alignment features, accompanying neurologic signs, pertinent brain imaging abnormalities, and measures used to relieve diplopia. METHODS: We searched the electronic medical records text from 2000 to 2018 for "skew" or "skew deviation" at a tertiary care academic center, including only pa

Surgery of cavernous hemangioma of the optic nerve: case report and review.

A case of a cavernous hemangioma of the optic nerve is presented. Cavernous malformations of the cranial nerves are quite rare and have been reported to involve the third nerve, the seventh nerve in the temporal bone, the seventh and the eighth nerves in the internal auditory canal as well as the optic chiasm and optic nerve. We present a case of a patient with a cavernous hemangioma within the right optic nerve, which could be removed by microsurgery with preservation and improvement of vision. Literature on this rare location of cavernoma is reviewed.

Environmental enrichment promotes plasticity and visual acuity recovery in adult monocular amblyopic rats.

Loss of visual acuity caused by abnormal visual experience during development (amblyopia) is an untreatable pathology in adults. In some occasions, amblyopic patients loose vision in their better eye owing to accidents or illnesses. While this condition is relevant both for its clinical importance and because it represents a case in which binocular interactions in the visual cortex are suppressed, it has scarcely been studied in animal models. We investigated whether exposure to environmental enrichment (EE) is effective in triggering recovery of vision in adult amblyopic rats rendered monocul
