Bilingual awake craniotomy with English and Polish language mapping in a 15-year-old patient provides evidence for the role of the left superior temporal gyrus in language switching.

The utility of intraoperative mapping in multilingual patients with brain tumours in speech-eloquent locations is evidenced by reports of heterogeneity of the location and number of language areas. Furthermore, preserving the ability to switch between languages is crucial for multilingual patients' communication and quality of life. We report the first case of intraoperative bilingual and language switching testing in a child undergoing awake craniotomy for a tumour within the left superior temporal gyrus using a novel test paradigm. Stimulation of the posterior superior temporal gyrus resulte

A Meta-Analysis of Medication Reduction and Motor Outcomes After Awake Versus Asleep Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There remains significant debate regarding the performance of deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures for Parkinson disease (PD) under local or general anesthesia. The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare the clinical outcomes between "asleep" DBS (general anesthesia) and "awake" DBS (local anesthesia) for PD. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of all published studies on DBS for PD following PRISMA guideline on PubMed and Cochrane library from January 2004 to April 2023. Inclusion criteria included cohort ≥15 patients, clinical outcomes dat

Alzheimer's disease and sleep disorders: A bidirectional relationship.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent dementia, pathologically featuring abnormal accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and hyperphosphorylated tau, while sleep, divided into rapid eye movement sleep (REM) and nonrapid eye movement sleep (NREM), plays a key role in consolidating social and spatial memory. Emerging evidence has revealed that sleep disorders such as circadian disturbances and disruption of neuronal rhythm activity are considered as both candidate risks and consequence of AD, suggesting a bidirectional relationship between sleep and AD. This review will firstly grasp basic know

The alterations of sleep and frontal functions in chronic hemodialysis: Pathogenesis and therapeutic perspectives.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and, in particular, chronic haemodialysis (HD) patients have a high risk of developing sleep disorders and executive dysfunction. Sleep disorders have a prevalence of 75 % in the haemodialysed population and several causes are behind their occurrence: sympatho-vagal imbalances, low melatonin production, vitamin D deficiency, altered cerebral haemodynamics and haemodialysis-induced vascular stress. Executive dysfunction affects about 55 % of haemodialysis patients. The causes can be ascribed to dysfunctions of the frontal lobes. HD patients show frontal brain atroph

Indoor air pollution and cognitive function among older adults in India: a multiple mediation approach through depression and sleep disorders.

BACKGROUND: Studies across multiple countries reveal that depression and sleep disorders can lead to cognitive decline. This study aims to speculate on the effect of different sources of indoor air pollution on cognition and to explore the mediation effect of depression and sleep disorders on cognition when exposed to indoor air pollution. We hypothesize that an older adult experiences higher cognitive decline from indoor pollution when mediated by depression and sleep disorders. METHODS: We use data from Longitudinal Aging Study in India (LASI), 2017-2018, and employ a multiple mediation mod

Conditions of sleep restoration after smoking cessation: A systematic review.

Previous studies have highlighted the prevalence of disordered sleep in smokers, with subjective sleep complaints and alterations of sleep architecture, including a reduction in slow-wave sleep (SWS). These findings raise questions regarding the impact of smoking cessation and withdrawal on sleep. This review aims to assess the impact of smoking cessation on sleep by taking into account objective and subjective methods of assessment. The selected articles compared both participants' sleep before and after smoking cessation, and the sleep characteristics of patients who had relapsed compared to

Edible Herbal Medicines as an Alternative to Common Medication for Sleep Disorders: A Review Article.

Insomnia is repeated difficulty in falling asleep, maintaining sleep, or experiencing lowquality sleep, resulting in some form of daytime disturbance. Sleeping disorders cause daytime fatigue, mental confusion, and over-sensitivity due to insufficient recovery from a sound sleep. There are some drugs, such as benzodiazepines and anti-histaminic agents, which help to sleep induction and insomnia cure. However, the prolonged administration is unsuitable because of tolerance and dependence. Therefore, the researchers attempt to find new medicines with lesser adverse effects. Natural products have

The Past and Future of Sleep Medicine.

The past of sleep medicine is rich with seminal discoveries, from the recognition of clinical syndromes to measurement of sleep itself to classic and novel therapeutics. Advances in neurobiology have mapped a number of sleep circuits, described the central and peripheral circadian system, and identified the cause of narcolepsy with cataplexy. Sleep apnea endotypes and phenotypes now have established clinical relevance, though treatment implications are a work in progress. Artificial intelligence will continue to change sleep medicine in a number of domains from aiding scoring to health outcome
