Oropharyngeal obstruction and respiratory system compliance are linked to ventilatory control parameters in pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Instable ventilatory control is an endotypic trait of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between the anatomical compromise of the upper (oro- and naso-pharynx) and lower airways and ventilatory control (measured by chemical loop gain) in otherwise healthy children suffering from moderate to severe OSAS (apnea hypopnea index ≥ 5/hour). The children underwent ear, nose and throat examination, measurement of impedance of the respiratory system that allowed characterizing peripheral lung mechanics using the extended Resistance-Inertance-Complian

Impact of continuous positive airway pressure therapy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in patients with obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been suggested as an independent risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the first-line therapy for OSA. AIM: To clarify the efficacy of effective CPAP therapy on NAFLD of OSA patients by serum markers and transient elastography (TE) using FibroScan® (Echosens, Paris, France). METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 123 consecutive patients with OSA who met the indications for CPAP. Liver fibrosis and steatosis were assessed using TE. Before and after 6 mo of CPAP therapy, serum marke

Does craniofacial morphology relate to sleep apnea severity reduction following weight loss intervention? A patient-level meta-analysis.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obesity is a common and reversible risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, there is substantial unexplained variability in the amount of OSA improvement for any given amount of weight loss. Facial photography is a simple, inexpensive, and radiation-free method for craniofacial assessment. Our aims were (1) to determine whether facial measurements can explain OSA changes, beyond weight loss magnitude and (2) whether facial morphology relates to how effective weight loss will be for OSA improvement. METHODS: We combined data from three weight loss intervention

Effects of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on Sleep EEG Characteristics in Patients with Primary Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on the electroencephalographic (EEG) characteristics of patients with primary central sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS). Nine patients with primary CSAS were enrolled in this study. The raw sleep EEG data were analyzed based on two main factors: fractal dimension (FD) and zero-crossing rate of detrended FD. Additionally, conventional EEG spectral analysis in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands was conducted using a fast Fourier transform. The FD in patients with primary CSAS who underwent CPAP treatment was

Case Report: Parasomnia Overlap Disorder Induced by Obstructive Sleep Hypopnea Apnea Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) and parasomnia overlap disorder (POD) are types of sleep disorders. When the symptoms of both conditions coexist, the POD symptoms are most likely caused by OSAHS. In these cases, the symptoms of POD will be relieved when OSAHS is effectively treated. We refer to these cases as symptomatic POD (related to OSAHS), which differs in pathophysiology, complications, and treatment from idiopathic POD. It is important to note that the treatment for idiopathic POD may aggravate the symptoms of OSAHS. In this case, we used video polysomnography (v-PSG)

Photobiomodulation by low-level laser therapy in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: Study protocol clinical trial (SPIRIT compliant).

UNLABELLED: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases morbidity and mortality and it is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. The gold standard treatment for OSA is positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP). However, it is an expensive treatment and several patients do not adapt to CPAP. GOAL: The researchers will verify the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on OSA, when applied to the soft palate and on the tongue base. METHODS: The researchers will select individuals of both sexes aged 30 to 60 years old who are sedentary and that present a high risk of OSA by the Berlin qu

Genome-wide association study reveals two novel risk alleles for incident obstructive sleep apnea in the EPISONO cohort.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep-related breathing disorder that has a complex phenotype. Currently, few genes have been linked with OSA. Thus, the aim of this study was to conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) variation along time (delta-AHI) in a prospective cohort. METHODS: We used data derived from the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO) (n = 1074) cohort, which was followed over eight years (n = 712). Our phenotype of interest was delta-AHI and incident OSA. Further, we were interested on the time-dependen

Automatic detection of sleep apnea events based on inter-band energy ratio obtained from multi-band EEG signal.

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder characterised by abnormal pauses in breathing. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal analysis plays an important role for detecting sleep apnea events. In this research work, a method is proposed on the basis of inter-band energy ratio features obtained from multi-band EEG signals for subject-specific classification of sleep apnea and non-apnea events. The K-nearest neighbourhood classifier is used for classification purpose. Unlike conventional methods, instead of classifying apnea patient and healthy person, the objective here is to differentia

Effects of Verbal Cueing on Respiratory-Swallow Patterning, Lung Volume Initiation, and Swallow Apnea Duration in Parkinson's Disease.

Respiratory-swallow coordination (RSC) is important for swallowing safety. Atypical RSC is common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is associated with the presence of dysphagia and aspiration. Verbal cueing is known to affect RSC in healthy adults, yet an understanding of its effect on RSC in PD is unknown. Therefore, the aims of this study were to: (1) assess the effects of verbal cueing on respiratory-swallow patterning, lung volume initiation, and swallow apnea duration in PD; and (2) determine when during tidal breathing verbal cues should be given in order to increase the likelihood of elic
