Fungal pathogens cause life-threatening infections in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals. Millions of people die each year due to fungal infections, comparable to the mortality attributable to tuberculosis or malaria. OBJECTIVE: Invasive zygomycosis is rapidly progressive and is associated with angioinvasion and infarction. Invasive disease requires emergent surgical and medical intervention. Because it is important for surgical pathologists to recognize these fungi and their preferential sites of growth, the objective of this article is to describe the fungal morphology and histopathologic findings in biopsies from patients with zygomycotic disease, with emphasis on preferential sites of fungal growth.

We have made quantitative bacterial and fungal culture for 148 biopsy specimens from burn patients. Further confirmation was made by frozen section with PAS stain in 82 of the specimens. It was discovered that the fungal infections in these burn patients were characterized by early onset with multiple organisms. It was also found that the incidence of fungal infections was higher in severe burns. Two rare cases of fungal infection were discovered, one of them was infected by Geotrichum SP, and the patient died; the other an infection by Homodendrum SP on the face, and the finally recovered.

Eleven cases of pulmonary aspergilloma complicating active cavitating pulmonary tuberculosis are reviewed. Nine of the 10 patients who had combined medical (antituberculosis drugs) and surgical treatment were cured of their disease; one patient, who had bilateral multiple aspergillomas, died from massive haemoptysis after resection of one of the affected lobes. The only medically treated patient who refused surgery had fatal haemoptysis at home.
