Implications of Zika virus and congenital Zika syndrome for the number of live births in Brazil.

An increase in microcephaly, associated with an epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil, prompted the World Health Organization to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in February 2016. While knowledge on biological and epidemiological aspects of ZIKV has advanced, demographic impacts remain poorly understood. This study uses time-series analysis to assess the impact of ZIKV on births. Data on births, fetal deaths, and hospitalizations due to abortion complications for Brazilian states, from 2010 to 2016, were used. Forecasts for September 2015 to December 2016 showed tha

Parental Refusal of Vitamin K and Neonatal Preventive Services: A Need for Surveillance.

Objectives Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) in infants is a coagulopathy preventable with a single dose of injectable vitamin K at birth. The Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigated vitamin K refusal among parents in 2013 after learning of four cases of VKDB associated with prophylaxis refusal. Methods Chart reviews were conducted at Nashville-area hospitals for 2011-2013 and Tennessee birthing centers for 2013 to identify parents who had refused injectable vitamin K for their infants. Contact information was obtained for paren

Postpartum anxiety and adjustment disorders in parents of infants with very low birth weight: Cross-sectional results from a controlled multicentre cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Both preterm delivery and survival rates of very low birth weight (VLBW: <1500 g) infants are increasing. To date, the focus on studies about postpartum mental health after preterm birth has been on depression and on women. There is a paucity of research regarding prevalence, risks, and predictors of postpartum anxiety in parents after VLBW birth. METHODS: Parents with VLBW infants and parents with term infants were recruited into the longitudinal HaFEn-study at the three largest centers of perinatal care in Hamburg, Germany. State anxiety was assessed with the State-Trait-Anxiety

Cerebral palsy in children born after in vitro fertilization. Is the risk decreasing?

BACKGROUND: Infants born after in vitro fertilization (IVF) differ from spontaneously conceived infants in a number of aspects which could increase the risk for future cerebral palsy (CP), e.g., multiple births, preterm births, neonatal complications. AIMS: To follow up children conceived by IVF with respect to risk for CP. METHODS: Infants born after IVF were identified from all IVF clinics in Sweden 1982-2007. Perinatal characteristics were obtained by linkage with the Medical Birth Register. The presence of CP in children born after IVF and in other children was identified from the Patien

Analysis of perinatal mortality at a teaching hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 1999-2003.

We conducted a retrospective analysis of perinatal mortality at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH), Dar es Salaam, Tanzania 1999-2003 in order to categorise/classify perinatal deaths as well as to identify key factors in perinatal care that could be improved. Data were retrieved from the MNH obstetric database and causes of early neonatal deaths were traced from the neonatal ward register. The study includes all foetuses weighing =500g. A modified Nordic-Baltic classification was used for classification of perinatal deaths. Over a 5-year period there were 77,815 babies born with a perinatal mor

Changes in frequency and indications for cesarean section in Norway 1967-1984.

We have studied the cesarean section frequencies and changing spectrum of indications in Norway during six consecutive 3-year periods from 1967 to 1984. The data set consists of 1,046,162 births notified to the Medical birth registry of Norway, of which 52,426 were specified as cesarean sections, the frequency rising from 1.9% in 1967-69 to 9.7% in 1982-84. A check for completeness of cesarean section notification was made against the birth protocols of the largest obstetrical unit in Norway. The error rate was about 3%. Information on the indication for performing cesarean section was missing

Neonatal health including congenital malformation risk of 1072 children born after vitrified embryo transfer.

STUDY QUESTION: Does vitrification of Day 3 and Day 5 embryos adversely affect birth outcomes of singletons and twins in comparison with peers born after fresh embryo transfer? SUMMARY ANSWER: Neonatal health parameters, including the prevalence of congenital malformations, in singletons and twins born after embryo vitrification are similar to or slightly better than after fresh embryo transfer. WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN: Although vitrification, rather than slow-freezing, of embryos is routine practice nowadays, convincing evidence regarding the safety for the offspring is sparse. Uncovering the hidden burden of congenital anomalies in Ecuador: a national integrated analysis of hospital discharges, mortality records, and live birth statistics (2012-2024).

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies (CA), ICD-10 Q00-Q99 codes, are major causes of infant morbidity and mortality, but national assessments remain limited in countries without integrated birth defect surveillance. This study characterized hospital burden, mortality, and epidemiological patterns of CA among infants in Ecuador. METHODS: A retrospective descriptive analysis of national administrative records was conducted using data from the INEC. Hospital discharge records covered 2012-2024, while mortality records and live birth statistics were incorporated according to availability. Analyses we

Severe maternal morbidity from conception to 6 weeks postpartum in Ontario: a population-based, longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although severe maternal morbidity (SMM), such as severe hemorrhage and sepsis, can occur from conception to 6 weeks postpartum, most surveillance studies in Canada are restricted to intrapartum cases, with rates approximating 17 per 1000 births. We aimed to characterize the frequency of SMM from conception to 6 weeks postpartum and describe its associations with maternal and clinical characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of births at 20 or more weeks' gestation, using administrative data in Ontario (2012 to 2021), and identified SMM using the Cana

Maternal Colonization, Perinatal Exposure, and Neonatal Acquisition of Resistant Enterobacterales.

BACKGROUND: Enterobacterales with ampicillin (AmpR-E) and ceftriaxone resistance (CefR-E) are globally prevalent. Perinatal transmission and infections with CefR-E strains are associated with higher mortality, morbidity, and health care costs. This study estimated the rate of gut colonization of AmpR-E and CefR-E in healthy birthing parent-infant dyads in Chicago and investigated the genetic characteristics of CefR-E. METHODS: Pregnant persons anticipating vaginal birth at 2 Chicago-area hospitals were enrolled. Pregnancy and birth history were obtained. Maternal vaginal and rectal swabs and

Maternal hypertensive pregnancy disorders increase childhood intellectual disability hazards independently from preterm birth and small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Children of mothers with hypertensive-disorders-of-pregnancy (HDP) have high rates of preterm-birth (<37 weeks' gestation) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA), both of which are risk factors of intellectual disability (ID). AIMS: To test the multiple-hit hypothesis that preterm-birth and SGA in the neonatal period might potentiate the antenatal impact of HDP to increase childhood ID hazards, and HDP might not have independent effects. METHODS: This population-based cohort study enrolled 1,417,373 mother-child pairs between 2004 and 2011. A total of 19,457 pairs with HDP were iden

Safety of performing classical versus low transverse caesarean sections in extremely preterm and very preterm births: Maternal and neonatal complications.

AIMS: Improved survivability of extremely preterm infants has led to increased rates of caesarean sections. Short-term maternal and neonatal risks of classical caesarean sections (CCS) in the context of extreme prematurity remain unclear. The aim was to examine maternal and neonatal complications associated with CCSs versus low transverse caesarean sections (LTCS) at extremely preterm (23 0/7-27 6/7 weeks) and very preterm gestational ages (28 0/7-31 6/7 weeks). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at Royal Brisbane and Womens Hospital, Queensland, Australia between 2016 and 20

Dilemma of belimumab therapy (dis)continuation during pregnancy: Results of a retrospective study in eudravigilance.

INTRODUCTION: The first biologic authorized for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) up to this date, belimumab, is currently not recommended for use during pregnancy due to lack of data. Provided that the health of the child begins with the health of the mother, pregnant patients face the dilemma of cessation or continuation of belimumab. If belimumab is stopped, there will be a risk of SLE flare and its consequences for the mother and the foetus. Continuation is also not optimal because of the lack of knowledge on safety for use during pregnancy. AIM: To compare the reported foetal outcomes i
