BACKGROUND: Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a disease that appears as proliferative lesions of the genital epithelium caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. The balance between type 1 and type 2 T-cell subsets in patients with CA is thought to modulate antiviral immunity. CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) inhibit proliferation and cytokine production by both T-helper (Th)1 and Th2 cells and reversibly suppress CTL-mediated immunity. Immunoglobulin (Ig) E may provide immunity against Borrelia burgdorferi infection (Lyme disease) in children which lasts throughout adulthood. We investigated the presence and persistence of IgE anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies (Abs) in paediatric patients infected with Lyme disease over time. OBJECTIVES: Most data on mitochondrial toxicity have been derived from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). However, whether mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content in PBMCs reflects the mitochondrial state in tissues remains elusive. We report herein on mitochondrial toxicity in skeletal muscle in HIV-infected patients naive to antiretroviral treatment (ART [HIV+ART-naive]; n = 10) patients exposed to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs [HIV+NRTI+]; n = 24) and healthy controls (n = 11), and compare these tissue data with mtDNA in PBMCs.

BACKGROUND: Recent data report altered gene expression of numerous pro- and anti-inflammatory factors involved in pathology of acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) signaling is engaged in a wide range of processes. Its effect on vessels seems to be protective due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic action. To examine the effect of recombinant bovine interferon-gamma (rbIFN-gamma) on cattle persistently infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV), BLV-infected cattle were inoculated intraperitoneally with IFN-gamma.
