Fast measurement of blood T1 in the human jugular vein at 3 Tesla.

Current T(1) values for blood at 3T largely came from in vitro studies on animal blood or freshly drawn human blood. Measurement of blood T(1) in vivo could provide more specific information, e.g., for individuals with abnormal blood composition. Here, blood T(1) at 3T was measured rapidly (<1 min) in the internal jugular vein using a fast inversion-recovery technique in which multiple inversion time can be acquired rapidly due to constant refreshing of blood. Multishot EPI acquisition with flow compensation yielded high resolution images with minimum partial volume effect. Results showed T(1)

Thromboelastographic analysis of novel polyethylene glycol based low volume resuscitation solutions.

BACKGROUND: Low volume resuscitation (LVR) in shock prevents deleterious effects of crystalloid loading in pre-hospital settings. Polyethylene glycol 20,000 (PEG-20k) based LVR solutions are 20-fold more effective at maintaining perfusion and survival in shock compared to conventional crystalloids. The aim of this study was to determine coagulation and platelet function of whole blood treated with 10% PEG-20k. METHODS: Citrated blood from volunteers (n = 25) or early admission severely injured trauma patients (n = 9) were diluted 10% with various LVR solutions in a matched design with a paire

Hidden Blood Loss in Anterior Cervical Fusion Surgery: An Analysis of Risk Factors.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study. OBJECTIVES: Anterior cervical fusion surgery is widely used procedure in cervical spondylosis. When considering the blood reinfusion strategies of cervical fusion surgery, the amount of blood loss is one of the key elements. We usually calculate the blood loss according to the surgical bleeding plus the postoperative drainage; however, this method ignores the possibility that there may be hidden blood loss (HBL). METHODS: We performed a retrospective study to determine the risk factors for HBL in patients who underwent anterior cervical fusion surgery for

Intranasal administration of enalapril confers acute neuroprotection by mitigating mitochondrial dysfunction and apoptosis in a rat model of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke remains a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, with effective treatments hindered by its complex pathophysiology. This study is the first to explore the neuroprotective potential of intranasal enalapril, in mitigating ischemic stroke outcomes through its influence on mitochondrial function. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), followed by the intranasal administration of enalapril (0.03 mg/kg) post-ischemia. Neurological function was evaluated after 24 hours of reperfusion through the modified

Effect of reduction in skeletal muscle quantity and sex differences on postoperative hepatic steatosis following total pancreatectomy.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the risk factors for new-onset hepatic steatosis after total pancreatectomy (TP), focusing on muscle loss and sex. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 100 patients who underwent TP between 2005 and 2024. Nutritional parameters, BMI, muscle volume, and liver status were evaluated. Logistic regression and subgroup analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for hepatic steatosis. RESULTS: The prevalence of hepatic steatosis increased from 3.0% preoperatively to 24.0% at 3-6 months after TP. Female patients showed a significantly higher incidence

A coordinated shift toward a macrocytic and hypochromic erythrocyte phenotype in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a multisystem disorder, but its hematological features remain incompletely characterized. We investigated whether erythrocyte-related indices show coordinated alterations in adults with NF1. In this retrospective single-institute study, 225 adults with NF1 were analyzed. Z-scores for erythrocyte-related parameters were calculated relative to a reference population. One-sample tests, correlation analyses, and comparisons across tumor burden (D-class) were performed. A composite score, defined as the mean of parameter-specific Z-scores, was used to assess coordi

Impact of infrared moxibustion for patients with mild hyperlipidemia: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperlipidemia serves as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and cognitive impairment, making early intervention and management highly necessary. Infrared moxibustion, a modern complementary and alternative therapy, currently lacks high-quality clinical research to substantiate its efficacy and underlying mechanisms. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effects of infrared moxibustion on blood lipid levels in patients with hyperlipidemia, and to explore its potential mechanisms by analyzing changes in gut microbiota and their metabolites, as well as altera

Mathematical modeling of peritoneal buffer transport and acidosis correction in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Assessing buffer base kinetics in dialysate using the three-pore model of peritoneal transport is not enough to predict changes to the acid-base equilibrium in blood during peritoneal dialysis (PD). We complemented the three-pore model with a model of acid-base homeostasis to evaluate differences between PD sessions using dialysis fluid buffered with lactate (PD4) or bicarbonate/lactate (B/L). Six patients underwent two 4-hour dwells with either B/L or PD4; blood and peritoneal fluid sampling was used to quantify intraperitoneal volume-using a radioiodinated albumin as volume marker-and solute

Fontan Surgical Planning: Numerical Simulations Reveal Efficient Geometries Predicting Post-Surgical Outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Computational fluid dynamics has the potential to assist cardiovascular surgeons in making more accurate decisions, allowing the prediction of post-surgical outcomes, provided that pre-surgical conditions are well established. However, the application of current techniques, which are based on volume methods, is still limited to a few specialized centers. Lack of knowledge, coupled with the need for advanced computational resources, can serve as obstacles to implementation. Objective: This study aimed to develop a replicable surgical planning procedure for a simplified and clinica

Suspected spontaneous femoral artery rupture in an otherwise healthy American pit bull.

A 1-year-old intact male American pit bull experienced a ruptured right femoral artery without trauma or coagulopathy. The dog was presented with right pelvic limb lameness and progressive subcutaneous swelling and bruising. Radiographs of the region identified soft-tissue swelling in the right thigh musculature. Bloodwork monitoring consisted of packed cell volume and total solids, which continued to decrease during hospitalization. A CT scan showed a non-contrast-enhancing possible mass effect in the region. Multiple blood and plasma transfusions were instituted while the dog was in hospital

Dexmedetomidine and surgical field visibility in nasal surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal and sinus surgery, especially using endoscopy, relies upon adequate haemostasis to be safe and effective. Often other haemostatic methods, such as cautery are not viable, and other methods must be employed. This study examines the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine in controlled hypotension and for surgical field visibility in endoscopic sinus surgery and other nasal surgeries. REVIEW METHODS: A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL and Central for randomised controlled trials using dexmedetomidine for controlled hypotension in adult patients undergoing e

Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal With the Hemolung in Patients With Acute-on-Chronic Respiratory Failure: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study.

Extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) devices are increasingly used in treating acute-on-chronic respiratory failure caused by chronic lung diseases. There are no large studies that investigated safety, efficacy, and the independent association of prognostic variables to survival that could define the role of ECCO2R devices in such patients. This multicenter, multinational, retrospective study investigated the efficacy, safety of a single ECCO2R device (Hemolung) in patients with acute on chronic respiratory failure and identified variables independently associated with intensive care
