Comparison of prognosis between patients undergoing surgical resection and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy for early-stage lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Surgical resection is the standard curative treatment for stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), whereas stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is an established alternative for patients who are medically inoperable or decline surgery. However, comparative long-term oncologic outcomes remain debated. This study compared outcomes of surgery and SBRT in patients with clinical stage I NSCLC. METHODS: This retrospective two-center cohort study included 157 patients treated between 2010 and 2022 (93 surgery, 64 SBRT). The surgical cohort included a substantial proportion of thoracot

Guardians of Memory, Dignity, and Family Cohesion: The Enduring Protective Role Underpinning Suicide-Bereaved Mothers' Psychosocial Needs and Engagement with Mental Health Care.

Background/Objectives: While there is an existing body of quantitative data on the psychological and mental burden of suicide-bereaved parents, further qualitative research is needed to explore suicide-bereaved mothers' living experiences in specific sociocultural contexts, especially in Southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Given the persistent stigma surrounding suicide in these societies, and the fact that previous research has often overlooked mothers' perspectives in favor of broader samples of bereaved parents, we explored the psychosocial needs of Greek-speaking suicide-bereave

Modifiable factors associated with frailty among indigenous older adults in southern Taiwan: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is a major public health challenge among older adults. Indigenous populations experience poorer health outcomes and a greater burden of frailty than the general population. However, evidence on modifiable factors associated with frailty in Taiwanese Indigenous older adults remains limited. This study examined the associations between nutritional status, anthropometric characteristics, physical function, physical activity, and frailty among Indigenous older adults living in rural communities. METHODS: A community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among 117 Indigeno

The evolving landscape of the Warburg effect in gastric cancer: From molecular mechanisms to targeted therapy.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) remains a major health burden because of late-stage diagnosis and resistance to systemic therapy. MAIN BODY: In GC, the Warburg effect is driven by interconnected hypoxia and oncogenic signalling, non-coding RNA networks and transcriptional and epigenetic rewiring. These regulators converge on glucose transport and core glycolytic enzymes, including HK2, PFKFB3, PKM2 and LDHA. The resulting increase in aerobic glycolysis, pyruvate-to-lactate conversion and lactate export supports biosynthesis, redox homeostasis and survival under metabolic stress. Beyond its bi

Association of unhealthy lifestyle and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus with arthritis in middle-aged and elderly Chinese individuals: evidence from the CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity is an emerging global public health concern. However, the relationship between a healthy lifestyle, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and arthritis remains unclear. Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of a healthy lifestyle on the comorbidity of T2DM and arthritis in the Chinese population. METHODS: The data originated from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and comprised 4,706 participants aged 45 years or over. The healthy lifestyle score (0-5) was determined by factors including smoking, drinking, physical activity, sleep and body mass i

Intellectual capability and its association with severe dental caries treatment needs in young Israeli adults: a cross-sectional record-based study.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in dental health resulting from social and economic inequality are a pressing public health concern. Poor and vulnerable populations bear a higher burden of caries exacerbated by limited access to quality dental care. Recent publications have suggested a possible association between intellectual capability and caries risk, as well as lower compliance with publicly funded healthcare services among populations with lower educational levels. The objective of this study was to explore potential associations between severe dental caries treatment needs (root canal treatments

Breed-specific responses to coccidiosis in chickens: identification of intestinal bacteria linked to disease resistance.

BACKGROUND: Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria parasites, is a major enteric disease in poultry, significantly impacting animal health, production performance, and welfare. This disease imposes a substantial economic burden, costing the global poultry industry up to $13 billion annually. However, effective mitigation strategies for coccidiosis remain elusive. While different chicken breeds exhibit varying resistance to coccidiosis, no commensal bacteria have been directly linked to this resistance. METHODS: To assess relative resistance of different breeds to coccidiosis, 10-day-old Fayoumi M5.1,

Alcohol-induced liver injury is mediated via α4-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors expressed in hepatocytes.

BACKGROUND: Our previous study demonstrated that alcohol induced the expression of the α4 subunit of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the livers of wild type mice (WT), and that whole-body α4 nAChR knockout mice (α4KO) showed protection against alcohol-induced steatosis, inflammation, and injury. Based on these findings, we hypothesized that hepatocyte-specific α4 nAChRs may directly contribute to the detrimental effects of alcohol on the liver. METHODS: Hepatocyte-specific α4 knockout mice (α4HepKO) were generated, and the absence of α4 nAChR was confirmed through PCR of genomic

Development of the Cystic Fibrosis Stress Questionnaire: testing and validation.

OBJECTIVE: Care guidelines for cystic fibrosis (CF) recommend annual screening for anxiety and depression using standardised measures, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Generalised Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). Research in other chronic illness groups such as diabetes has demonstrated that illness-specific distress predicts daily functioning above and beyond depression alone. To address the need for a measure of illness-specific distress, we developed and validated the CF Stress Questionnaire (CFSQ), which could serve as a meaningful adjunct to mental health screening. METHOD

Absence of bidirectional causality between primary biliary cholangitis and major depression: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Despite a growing body of evidence suggesting an association between primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and depression, the relationship between the 2 diseases remains to be elucidated due to the limitations of observational studies. Our study aims to clarify the causal relationship between these 2 diseases. We conducted a 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis using genetic variant data for PBC and major depression (MD) from the genome-wide association studies catalog. The genome-wide association studies dataset for PBC includes 8021 cases, while that for MD comprises 170,756 cases. We

Prolonged antiretroviral therapy use and hypertension in a retrospective cross-sectional study-Rakai, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: While antiretroviral therapy (ART) reduces AIDS-related morbidity and mortality, it is unclear if prolonged ART use among people living with HIV (PLHIV) increases the risk of hypertension. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the association between the duration of ART use and hypertension in the Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS). DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study among PLHIV (35-49 years old) on ART in the RCCS who were surveyed between August 2016 and May 2018. METHODS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) was measured twice, averaged, and classified as any hypertension (
