In conscious dogs, provided with gastric and duodenal fistulas (Thomas cannula), the effect of an acute i.v. calcium infusion (10 mg./kg./hr.) on the plateau levels of secretin-induced (GIH, 1 CU./kg./hr.) pancreatic juice parameters were analyzed without or with previous cholingergic blockade by a continuous atropine perfusion (1.5 mg./hr.). In the former condition, i.v. calcium raised all pancreatic juice parameters, mainly protein concentration (148%) and output (173%). During atropine blockade, i.v. calcium changed neither flow rate nor bicarbonate output of secretin-induced pancreatic sec…

The infusion of calcium results in the release of gastrin, calcitonin, and serotonin from certain nonbeta islet cell tumors of the pancreas, medullary carcinomas of the thyroid, and carcinoid tumors, respectively. In this study, intravenous infusion of either calcium chloride or calcium aluconate in a patient with an islet-cell carcinoma resulted in a simultaneous rise in plasma immunoreactive insulin and proinsulin, and concurrent hypoglycemia. After resection of the tumor, calcium infusion caused no change in these parameters. Similarly, calcium infusion caused no change in plasma insulin or…

1. Observations were made on the excretion of calcium and magnesium by the sheep's kidney following manipulation of the acid-base status.2. Intravascular administration of a synthetic solution resembling saliva abolished the naturally occurring acidosis in sheep during feeding, and it also prevented the normal onset of post-prandial hypercalciuria and hypermagnesiuria.3. Non-respiratory acidosis (induced by infusion of hydrochloric acid) and respiratory acidosis arising from inhalation of 6% (v/v) CO(2) in air both caused an acute increase in calcium excretion.4. Measurement of filtered loads …

In an oral calcium-loading test performed on 10 infants with vitamin-D deficiency rickets and low fasting calcium levels, a comparison of results before and after therapy showed that vitamin D raised the serum calcium level at each stage of the test and altered the response so that a more rapid and substantial rise and fall in serum calcium occurred. The effects of vitamin D therapy on newborn infants with hypocalcaemic hyperphosphataemic tetany in another study suggests that these infants should be treated in this way to make them more responsive to oral calcium therapy.

1. The rat isolated anterior mesenteric artery was perfused at a constant rate with a calcium-free depolarizing solution. Injection close to the cannula of 0.05-0.1 ml. of solutions of CaCl(2) (117 mM) or BaCl(2) (100 mM) caused a rise in perfusion pressure.2. The responses to injected CaCl(2) solution could be obtained repeatedly but those to successive injections of BaCl(2) solution slowly declined. When the responsiveness to barium had almost disappeared, it could be restored by the addition to the perfusing fluid of a small amount of calcium (0.05 mM).3. The contractile effects of calcium …
