Water-soluble fractions from Protected Denomination of Origin Manchego cheese, with molecular weight <1,000 Da, were fractionated using gel permeation chromatography and studied using both instrumental and sensorial analysis. In 2 of the fractions, panelists detected a floral, rose-like flavor. Analysis of these fractions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after simultaneous distillation extraction with dichloromethane identified 2-phenylethanol and phenylacetaldehyde as the compounds responsible for this flavor.

An antigonadotropic decapeptide was extracted from bovine pineal glands, purified by ultrafiltration and Sephadex G-25 gel-filtration chromatography and isolated by serial semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography. Its primary structure was determined by automated amino acid and microsequence analyses. A synthetic analog of the decapeptide, prepared by solid state methods, was observed to reduce circulating levels of luteinizing hormone and prolactin after intra-atrial injection in male rats.

The propionylpromazine concentrations in plasma after intramuscular administration to horses were determined using gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection. After hydrolysis by beta-glucuronidase/arylsulphatase, the parent drug and three metabolites were detected in urine. The metabolites were identified as 2-(1-hydroxypropyl)promazine, 2-(1-propenyl)promazine and 7-hydroxypropionylpromazine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. No N-demethylated or sulphoxidated metabolites of propionylpromazine were observed in the horse urine.

The effects of 2 pickle brine recycling treatments on residues of selected insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides are presented. Residues were determined in raw and brined cucumbers, in untreated brine, and in brine following pasteurization or chemical (NaOH) treatment. The samples were extracted with acetone, partitioned into methylene chloride, cleaned up by gel permeation chromatography, and quantitatted by gas-liquid chromatography using nitrogen/phosphorus, electron capture, and flame photometric detectors.

The aim of the study was to determine the composition of flavour isolates from garlic and horse-radish, prepared by dichlorodifluoromethane extraction. Gas chromatography, with olfactory determination of the flavour of the resolved components, and gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry were used. In the garlic extract 19 components comprising mono-, di-, and trisulphides and thiophene derivatives were detected. In the horse-radish extract 14 components including isothiocyanates, thiocyanates and cyanides were identified.
