Cognitive load results in motor overflow in essential tremor.

SK is an 84-year-old woman diagnosed with essential tremor (ET) but no cognitive deficits. In this experiment, we tested the effects of mental rotation (a form of additional cognitive load) during reaching behavior (with the right hand) on the tremor profile of the non-moving left hand. We observed a marked increase in tremor and its variability, as well as the "freezing" of the movement pattern as effects of the cognitive load. These findings imply cognitive-motor overlaps in patients with ET, raising the possibility that the deficits reflect the loss of a common pool of neural resources, des

The cognitive side of essential tremor: what are the therapeutic implications?

While essential tremor (ET) has traditionally been categorized as a pure motor disease, cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of cognition in ET have demonstrated that these patients may have cognitive dysfunction. Recent epidemiological studies demonstrate an association between ET (particularly with onset after age 65) and increased risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. Although existing studies have generally conceptualized cognitive changes in ET as consistent with a 'frontosubcortical' or 'corticocerebellar' profile, results from these same studies suggest that cognitive impairme

Influence of cognitive decline on sexuality in individuals with dementia and their caregivers.

Sexuality is an important element of human life that is strongly influenced by the social environment. People assess themselves and relate their roles to one another in terms of sexuality. More attention must be directed at the sexual needs of individuals with dementia and their caregivers. A myth believed by society is that individuals with dementia are asexual and that sexual desires and needs for connection will wane over time; whereas in reality many couples living with dementia remain sexually active as the disease progresses. The sexual needs of individuals with dementia are similar to t

Cognitive neuroscience: targeting neuroplasticity with neural decoding and biofeedback.

New research combining neural decoding and biofeedback to target neuroplasticity causally links early visual cortical plasticity with improved perception. This is an exciting new approach to understanding brain function, one which may lead to new ways of treating neurological disorders by targeted intervention.

Joint principles of motor and cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Traditionally, the lateral premotor cortex (PM) is assigned a role in stimulus-driven rather than memory-driven motor control, whereas the opposite holds for the mesial premotor cortex (supplementary motor area, SMA). Consistently, patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), in which a specific functional degradation of the mesial loop (i.e., SMA-Striatum) occurs, show impaired memory-driven but relatively preserved stimulus-driven motor control. However, both parts of the premotor cortex are involved in perceptual prediction tasks as well. Here we tested whether the functional bias described on t

Cognitive functions in patients with panic disorder: a literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a review of the literature on the possible neuropsychological deficits present in patients with panic disorder. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and search of the PubMed, ISI and PsycInfo scientific databases, with no time limits, using the following key words: cognitive, function, panic, and disorder. Of the 971 articles found, 25 were selected and 17 were included in this review. The inclusion criterion was at least one neuropsychological assessment task in patients with panic disorder. RESULTS: The number of publications has grown gradually, especially those

Investigating the structure of the WJ-III Cognitive at school age.

During its development, the Woodcock-Johnson, Third Edition Cognitive (WJ-III Cognitive; McGrew & Woodcock, 2001) was never subjected to structural analysis using exploratory and higher order factor analyses. Instead, confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on separate sets of WJ-III correlation matrices, yielding a seven-factor model across all age ranges. To see whether the structure holds for the WJ-III Cognitive, currently recognized best practice exploratory factor analysis (EFA) procedures were applied to two school-aged correlation matrices (ages 9-13; 14-19) from the normative samp

Effortful and automatic cognitive inhibition in adults with Tourette's syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Inhibition has been widely investigated in Tourette's syndrome (TS), but some inhibitory processes have received more attention than others. This study examined the relatively underresearched construct of cognitive inhibition in adults with TS and no comorbidities (TS-alone), using tasks thought to tap automatic (without conscious intent) and effortful (with deliberate intent) inhibitory processes. METHOD: Adult participants with TS-alone (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 21) were compared on a retrieval-induced forgetting task thought to tap automatic cognitive inhibition and a d

Optic neuritis: from magnocellular to cognitive residual dysfunction.

Optic Neuritis (ON) has been associated to both parvocellular dysfunction and to an alteration of the magnocellular pathway. After objective visual field and acuity recovery, ON patients may complain about their vision suggesting a residual subclinical deficit. To better characterize visual abnormalities, 8 patients recovering from a first ON episode as well as 16 healthy controls performed a simple detection task and a more complex categorization task of images presented in low spatial frequencies (to target the magnocellular system) or in high spatial frequencies (to target the parvocellular

Cognitive trajectory after transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is known to be associated with silent cerebral injury, which could contribute to cognitive impairment. Considering its increasing use, thorough longitudinal investigation of cognitive trajectory after TAVI is pivotal. METHODS AND RESULTS: Repeatable battery for the assessment of neuropsychological status was performed before (E1), 3 days (E2), 3 months (E3), 1 (E4) year, and 2 years (E5) after TAVI. Prevalence of cortical superficial siderosis in patients with cognitive impairment.

Cortical superficial siderosis (cSS) is a magnetic resonance imaging marker of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and can be its sole imaging sign. cSS has further been identified as a risk marker for future intracranial hemorrhage. Although uncommon in the general population, cSS may be much more prevalent in high risk populations for amyloid pathology. We aimed to determine the frequency of cSS in patients with cognitive impairment presenting to a memory clinic. We prospectively evaluated consecutive patients presenting to our memory clinic between April 2011 and April 2013. Subjects received

Consequences of anticipatory processing on cognitive symptoms of social anxiety.

Anticipatory processing is an anxious style of repetitive negative thought associated with social anxiety (SA) that was proposed by Clark and Wells. Considerable research has examined factors of Clark and Wells' cognitive model of SA (e.g. attention, interpretation), but few studies have examined anticipatory processing, which is hypothesized to interact with other components in the model. In the current study, individuals high in social anxiety symptoms (HSA; N = 56) and control participants [Normal Control (NC); N = 52] engaged in an anticipation or distraction task prior to a threatened soc

Risk factors for cognitive dysfunction in CKD and hypertensive subjects.

PURPOSE: Cognitive dysfunction (CO/DY) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients has long been recognized. Hypertension is also associated with CO/DY. The study describes associated factors with CO/DY in CKD patients compared to hypertensive subjects. METHODS: Ninety-six hypertensive subjects without CKD, 19 patients with CKD stages I-II, 33 with CKD III, 42 with CKD stage IV, 33 on hemodialysis (HD) and 33 on peritoneal dialysis (PD) were included in our study. Cognitive impairment measured by MMSE, clock-drawing test and IADL was considered as primary outcome. RESULTS: In all groups tested,

Childhood cognitive development after fetal growth restriction.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between prenatal umbilical artery (UA) and internal carotid artery (ICA) Doppler findings and cognitive development at 3 and 6 years in low-birth-weight children. METHODS: This was a study of 209 low-birth-weight (< 10(th) centile) children born after 28 gestational weeks with UA resistance index (RI) measured within 2 weeks before delivery. Children with normal UA- and ICA-RI were defined as small-for-gestational age (SGA) and those with abnormal UA or ICA Doppler findings as having fetal growth restriction (FGR). Impulsivity, cognitive function, and their relationship in heroin-dependent individuals.

There is mixed evidence concerning cognitive function and heroin dependence. In this study, abstinent heroin-dependent individuals (n = 86) and age- and sex-matched non-drug-using controls (n = 88) were compared on self-report measures of impulsivity and computerized assessments of cognitive function. Abstinent heroin-dependent individuals reported greater motor impulsivity and experience seeking and showed functional weaknesses in cognitive ability, including impulsivity and distractibility (d = 0.28 to 0.49), but not decision making or working memory. Self-reported impulsivity was uncorrelat

Nicotine deprivation influences P300 markers of cognitive control.

Studies suggest that reduced cognitive control due to nicotine withdrawal may have a critical role in promoting tobacco use. The P3 family of event-related brain potential (ERP) components is thought to serve as markers of cognitive control processes. Unfortunately, existing research that examines the effects of nicotine deprivation on P3 amplitude has been marred by small sample sizes and other design limitations. The present study sought to determine the effects of nicotine deprivation on P3b and P3a amplitudes, which index task relevant target detection and orienting responses to novelty, r

Cognitive and psychosocial phenotype of young children with neurofibromatosis-1.

Children with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF1), a neurodevelopmental disorder resulting from a mutation of the NF1 gene (17q11.2), often have difficulties with learning and attention, but there is little research in the early childhood years. In this study, the cognitive and psychosocial functioning of 40 young children with NF1 (ages 3 through 6) was examined and compared both to normative data and to a contrast group comprised of unaffected siblings and community members matched for age and socio-economic status (n = 37). Children with NF1 showed significantly weaker cognitive abilities across all

Parents of children with dyslexia: cognitive, emotional and behavioural profile.

Within a dimensional view of reading disorders, it is important to understand the role of environmental factors in determining individual differences in literacy outcome. In the present study, we compared a group of 40 parents of children with dyslexia (PDys) with a group of 40 parents of typically developing children. The two parent groups did not differ in socioeconomic status or nonverbal IQ. Participants were assessed on cognitive (IQ, digit span) and literacy (reading fluency and accuracy) tasks, phonological awareness and verbal fluency measures. Questionnaires addressed reading history,
