We wanted to evaluate factors associated with high costs after allogeneic haematopoietic SCT (HSCT). We collected all in-patient and outpatient costs during the first year after HSCT over 5 years, from 2003 to 2007. Mean 1-year costs per patient were \[euro]141,493 (95% confidence interval (95% CI)=125,019-157,967). The efficacy of systemic chemotherapy (CDDP + IFO + 5-FU or CDDP + IFO + CPT-11) was evaluated in 41 patients with malignant pleural effusion secondary to adenocarcinoma of the lung. The overall response rate for measurable disease was 56.1%. The response for pleural effusion was evaluated according to the criteria of the Japan Lung Cancer Society. The overall response for pleural effusion was 53.7% (34.1% CR and 19.5% PR). The median survival time was 361 days. These results suggested that systemic chemotherapy is an effective treatment for pleuritis carcinomatosa.

High-dose chemotherapy is associated with a high complete response rate and possibly some survival advantage in patients with metastatic breast cancer. We designed a clinical trial consisting of a two-step high-dose chemotherapy regimen followed by posttransplantation doxorubicin as the first chemotherapy treatment for metastatic disease. Twenty-one patients with metastatic breast cancer and no previous chemotherapy for metastatic disease were treated with high-dose cyclophosphamide (Cy; 5000 mg/m2), followed by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor. Peripheral blood stem cells were collected.

Long-term cultures of mouse bone marrow cells were treated with naloxone, starting at the time of culture initiation or in the 2nd or 4th week of culture. Cell proliferation was suppressed and the ratio of immature and mature granulocytes to macrophages diminished by naloxone treatment.
