Predisposing factors to severe external root resorption associated to orthodontic treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate predisposing factors among patients who developed moderate or severe external root resorption (Malmgren's grades 3 and 4), on the maxillary incisors, during fixed orthodontic treatment in the permanent dentition. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients who underwent orthodontic treatment with fixed edgewise appliances were selected. Patients were divided into two groups: G1 - 50 patients with no root resorption or presenting only apical irregularities (Malmgren's grades 0 and 1) at the end of the treatment, with mean initial age of 16.79 years and mean t

A review of 202 periprosthetic fractures--stem revision and allograft improves outcome for type B fractures.

We report a retrospective review of the outcome of treatment of 202 periprosthetic fractures around total hip arthroplasty (THA) from two specialised arthroplasty centres. Fractures were classified according to the Vancouver classification. The aim was to evaluate treatment methods with respect to stem revision and grafting. Transverse B1 fractures treated with stem revision compared to those treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a plate showed a trend towards improved overall union rate (OR=2, p=0.6, 95% CI:0.14-28.4) and shorter times to union (p=0.038, mean 12 months

Osteoporosis-like bone conditions affect osseointegration of implants.

PURPOSE: Usage of dental implants has become common for the treatment of edentulous patients, but concerns exist over the use of implants in patients where orofacial bone loss occurs. In the present study, the osseointegration of implants in rabbits under osteoporosis-like (OP-like) conditions simulating several clinically relevant conditions is reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty rabbits were divided into 4 groups of 10. Three groups of animals received daily intramuscular injections of glucocorticoids (7.5 mg/kg) for 8 weeks to induce OP-like conditions either before, simultaneous to, or

Treatment with raloxifene for 2 years increases vertebral bone mineral density as measured by volumetric quantitative computed tomography.

Volumetric quantitative computed tomography (vQCT), using multiple thin-slice acquisition, measures three-dimensional volumetric bone mineral density (BMD, mg/cm3). vQCT is often used to measure BMD of lumbar vertebrae and may detect early changes in trabecular, cortical, or integral BMD that extend beyond the technical limits of areal dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) BMD measurements. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of 2 years of raloxifene (RLX) treatment on several volumetric BMD measures in a subset of postmenopausal women (n=58) enrolled in the Multiple Outcomes of

Preoperative assessment for and outcomes of mandibular conservation surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The role of marginal mandibulectomy and other conservative resective procedures for patients with early cortical mandibular invasion from squamous carcinoma of the oral cavity remains poorly defined. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative assessment for bone invasion and the outcomes of different mandibular resective procedures that preserve mandibular continuity. METHODS: The charts of 222 patients treated at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center between 1960 and 1990 were reviewed. All patients had a biopsy-confirmed

Home-Based Telehealth Exercise Intervention in Early-On Survivors of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of pediatric cancer. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia causes an altered bone mineral homeostasis state, which can contribute to osteopenia, and bone fractures, most commonly vertebral fractures. With the increasing number of childhood cancer survivors, late adverse effects such as musculoskeletal comorbidities are often reported and are further influenced by inactive lifestyle habits. Physical activity has been shown to increase the mechanical workload of the bone, mitigating bone impairment in other cancer-specific populations. OBJ

Radiomic texture mapping improves visualization of simulated condylar bone lesions in cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess whether texture feature maps (TFMs) derived from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images improve the detection of small simulated condylar defects and to examine the influence of voxel size. METHODS: Eight dry mandibles received 3 spherical defects (0.9, 1.0, 1.2 mm) in each condyle. CBCT scans were performed at voxel sizes of 0.20 mm and 0.40 mm. Sagittal and coronal slices were exported and processed in MaZda software to generate Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM)-based texture maps (contrast, entropy, etc). Adaptive Transcranial Ultrasound Doppler Imaging of the Brain.

The development of fully noninvasive, transcranial functional ultrasound (fUS) would increase the translatability and clinical potential of this neuroimaging modality. Unfortunately, transcranial fUS is hindered by skull-induced aberrations which degrade the power Doppler image quality and lower sensitivity. As a result, a majority of fUS imaging studies rely on craniotomies or acoustically transparent cranial windows. To advance fUS technology further, we present an adaptive aberration correction method based on ray-tracing through four tissue layers (transducer lens, gel and skin, bone, and

Patient-specific finite element models of human vertebrae with simulated osteolytic defects: Predictive accuracy of surface strain and endplate deflection.

Approximately 40% of cancer patients develop spinal metastases, often leading to vertebral fragility fractures. Osteolytic metastases are the most severe, as they significantly alter strain distribution in bone tissue. This pilot study extends a previously validated experimental-computational framework for intact vertebrae to assess the accuracy of personalized finite element models (FEM) in the presence of controlled artificial lytic defects. Three human lumbar vertebrae (L3-L5) were tested in intact and defect conditions. Progressively enlarging hemispherical defects (10-25 mm diameter) were

Pediatric vertebral tumors: radiologic features and differential diagnoses.

Primary vertebral tumors in children are rare but clinically significant due to their potential for neurological compromise, spinal instability, and growth-related deformities. These lesions encompass a wide histologic spectrum, ranging from benign entities, such as osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma, to aggressive malignancies like Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma. Despite their rarity, timely and accurate diagnosis is essential, as delays can result in irreversible neurological deficits. Imaging is fundamental across the clinical continuum, from detection and characterization to treatment plann
