Accuracy of AI-based binary classification for detecting malocclusion in the mixed dentition stage.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is a common anomaly and is frequently observed in children and adults. Early detection and treatment of malocclusion is necessary to prevent and minimize complications. Therefore, developing a tool to check dentition at an early stage and motivate patients themselves to visit the dentist is required. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the feasibility of building an AI model that can detect malocclusion in children during the mixed dentition stage. METHODS: This study was conducted as a feasibility study using cross-sectional data. Subjects were recruited from pan

Continuous use of direct oral anticoagulants during and after simple and surgical tooth extractions: a prospective clinical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: No consistent approach to the management of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) during and after oral surgery has been established. Thus, DOACs may be unnecessarily discontinued, raising the potential risk of life-threatening thromboembolism. To address the inconsistency in this approach, our study assessed the risk of bleeding and other complications in patients who continue to use DOACs during and after simple and surgical tooth extractions. METHODS: Between May 2016 and December 2023, this prospective study recruited patients aged 18 years or older who were receiving a DOAC or w

Correlation of Personality, Temperament, and Behavior of Children in the Dental Environment.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: A child's temperament, influenced by inborn traits and emotional regulation, can impact their dental behavior and caries risk. Parenting styles, such as authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, or neglectful, also play a significant role. Authoritative parenting tends to yield more favorable dental outcomes, while permissive parenting can lead to a higher prevalence of caries. Studying these interactions can help tailor dental interventions and address potential risks associated with caries development. Thus, the study aims to correlate parental personality, the child's te

The Impact of a Pandemic on a Military Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Biopsy Service.

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the resulting societal reaction presented new challenges to the medical community by limiting patient access to care in 2020 and 2021. The Navy Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS) oral and maxillofacial pathology biopsy service is dependent on in-office physician or dentist appointments and patient biopsies. The purpose of this study was to understand the regulatory and societal impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on biopsy service submissions by assessing NPDS biopsy submission quantities and disease distribution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All NP

Establishing a Graft-Versus-Host Disease (GVHD)-Focused Multidisciplinary Telehealth Clinic.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a complication following allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplant that frequently causes multiorgan affection and decrease in quality of life. Global assessment and care of these patients require a multidisciplinary approach, but access to focused clinics is limited given their scarcity and location in major cities, as well as mobility and transportation challenges that frequently affect these patients. Thus, we established a multispecialty GVHD telehealth (TH) clinic and hypothesized that a virtual platform will expand access to clinical care in children an

Capnography Should Be Mandatory Monitoring For Moderate Sedation.

Background There has been increasing concern by the American Dental Association, state dental boards, regional legislators, and specialty groups about the current state of dental anesthesia. Specific interest has surrounded methods to improve patient safety during parental sedation and anesthesia. Many times in the history of dental anesthesia, monitoring advances begin in the hospital for general anesthesia, then downscale, become smaller, and find utility in outpatient anesthesia. Monitoring advances ultimately have been shown to improve patient safety and are subsequently universally adopte

Scleroderma and dentistry: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma is a chronic connective tissue disorder with unknown etiology. It is characterized by excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in the connective tissues causing vascular disturbances which can result in tissue hypoxia. These changes are manifested as atrophy of the skin and/or mucosa, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and internal organs. Such changes can be classified into two types, namely, morphea (localized) and diffuse (systemic). Morphea can manifest itself as hemifacial atrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) although this remains debatable. Hence, we present a case of

Enteral nutrition feeding alters antioxidant activity in unstimulated whole saliva composition of patients with neurological disorders.

Patients with neurological disorders have an increased risk of oral and systemic diseases due to compromised oral hygiene. If patients lose the ability to swallow and chew food as a result of their disorder, enteral nutrition is often utilized. However, this type of feeding may modify salivary antioxidant defenses, resulting in increased oxidative damage and the emergence of various diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of enteral nutrition on biochemical parameters in the unstimulated whole saliva composition of patients with neurological disorders. For this, enzymatic (

Dental problems and emergencies of trekkers--epidemiology and prevention. Results of the ADEMED Expedition 2008.

OBJECTIVE: Dental problems are rarely mentioned in the training of medical students or physicians in travel medicine, and there are little data on dental problems of travellers in the literature. We studied the epidemiology of dental problems amongst trekkers in Nepal to develop strategies for preventive care during/before travelling and propose a curriculum for dental First Aid training. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We undertook a prospective, cross-sectional questionnaire and clinical dental survey of Trekkers at Manang (3550 m, Annapurna Circuit, Nepal). The questionnaire was developed based on p

Failure on all fronts: general dental practitioners' views on promoting oral health in high caries risk children--a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite overall improvements in oral health, a large number of children in United Kingdom (UK) are affected by dental caries; and the implementation of oral health promotion in some families remains a challenge. As such, children from those families suffer high caries rates, and are frequently referred for tooth extraction under General Anaesthesia (GA), one of the commonest reasons for paediatric hospital admissions. The aim of this investigation is to explore referring primary care General Dental Practitioners' (GDPs) views and experiences in trying to promote better oral health

Oral care and sensory sensitivities in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are at high risk for oral disease. The aim of this study was to examine the contribution of sensory processing problems to challenges in receiving oral care for children with ASD. A questionnaire was sent to the parents of 206 children with disabilities to test the hypotheses that children with ASD, relative to children with other disabilities, experience greater difficulty with home-based and professional oral care, and that these difficulties may relate in part to sensory processing problems. The results partially supported these hypotheses. Comp

Optimising the dose of oral midazolam sedation for dental procedures in children: a prospective, randomised, and controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Midazolam sedation poses a significant dilemma in paediatric dentistry, which is to find out the optimal dosing with minimal undesirable adverse events. In this study, we aimed to compare the effect of three doses of oral midazolam (0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/kg) on the sedative state and cooperative behaviour of children during dental treatment. We further compared completion rates, parent satisfaction, and all adverse events. DESIGN: Ninety children aged 3-10 years were randomised to three equal groups. Groups A, B, and C received 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/kg of oral midazolam, respectively.
