Retrospective Study of Dupilumab Treatment for Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis in Korea: Efficacy and Safety of Dupilumab in Real-World Practice.

Among biological agents for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD), dupilumab is a front-runner. Although many studies have been conducted on the real-world use of dupilumab, the sample size is often small and data is primarily on Western people. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy and safety of dupilumab in patients with moderate-to-severe AD in Korea. All patients with moderate-to-severe AD treated with dupilumab from September 2018 to June 2019 in this institution were included and analyzed by medical records. They were evaluated using the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI), Numeric

Effectiveness of Sexual Skills Training Program on Promoting Sexual Intimacy and Satisfaction in Women in Tehran (Iran): A randomized clinical Trial Study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous propionibacteria are implicated in acne pathogenesis, although their exact role in the genesis of inflammation is still poorly understood. Agents, including antibiotics, that reduce the numbers of propionibacteria on skin are therapeutic. Resistance in the target organism is a well-recognized consequence of antibiotic therapy for acne but formal prevalence and distribution data are lacking. OBJECTIVES: To monitor the prevalence of skin colonization by antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria in acne patients attending the dermatology out-patient clinic at Leeds General Infi

[Self-inflicted lesions in the context of hidradenitis suppurativa: Pathomimicry].

BACKGROUND: Factitious disorders constitute a complex pathology for the dermatologist. Although a diagnosis is often indicated, it is difficult to confirm and treatment is complicated. Dermatitis artefacta is the somatic expression of an often serious psychiatric disorder consciously created by patients on their own cutaneous-mucosal surfaces but the motivation is unconscious and no secondary benefits are sought (in contrast to simulation). Pathomimicry represent a specific entity: the provocation of outbreaks of a known disease, triggered by voluntary exposure to a causative agent. Herein we

Biologic and Conventional Systemic Therapies Show Similar Safety and Efficacy in Elderly and Adult Patients With Moderate to Severe Psoriasis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Despite the aging population, few studies have documented the treatment of geriatric psoriasis. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy, safety, and prescribing patterns of biologics and conventional systemic medications in elderly versus adult psoriasis. METHODS: All patient visits coded for psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis (ICD-9 696.1 or 696.0) at the Tufts Medical Center General Dermatology Clinic from January 1, 2008, to March 1, 2015 were included in this retrospective cohort study. The outcome measure used was the validated simple-measure for assessin

Inhibition of the endosymbiont "Candidatus Midichloria mitochondrii" during 16S rRNA gene profiling reveals potential pathogens in Ixodes ticks from Australia.

BACKGROUND: The Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) is of significant medical and veterinary importance as a cause of dermatological and neurological disease, yet there is currently limited information about the bacterial communities harboured by these ticks and the risk of infectious disease transmission to humans and domestic animals. Ongoing controversy about the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the aetiological agent of Lyme disease) in Australia increases the need to accurately identify and characterise bacteria harboured by I. holocyclus ticks. METHODS: Universal P

Clinical and instrumental evaluation of skin improvement after treatment with a new 50% pyruvic acid peel.

BACKGROUND: Pyruvic acid is an alpha-keto acid that presents keratolytic, antimicrobial, and sebostatic properties as well as the ability to stimulate new collagen production and elastic fibers formation. Because of its low pKa and its small dimension, it penetrates rapidly and deeply through the skin, so far as to be considered a potent chemical peel agent. It has proven its efficacy for the treatment of many dermatological conditions such as acne, superficial scarring, photodamage, and pigmentary disorders. Pyruvic acid application usually induces intense burning, and the postpeeling period

Anaesthetist's responses to patients' self-reported drug allergies.

BACKGROUND: Patients with drug allergies are commonplace in anaesthetic practice. We investigated the incidence and nature of drug 'allergies' reported by surgical patients attending a hospital pre-admission clinic, and went on to ascertain to what degree drug allergies recorded in the records influenced drug prescribing during the patients' hospital stay and determine whether any adverse events occurred in relation to drug prescribing in this population. METHODS: Patients attending for anaesthetic assessment at a Pre-Admission Clinic over a 30 week period were questioned concerning drug alle

Prescriptions for atopic dermatitis: oral corticosteroids remain commonplace.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by pruritic, often lichenified, patches and plaques. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Humana database, a large claim-based database encompassing more than 20 million patients under a commercial healthcare insurance plan. Our cohort included 39,526 subjects who saw a dermatologist for a primary ICD-9 diagnosis of atopic dermatitis (691.8) between the years of 2010 and 2015. Subjects were stratified according to gender, age and race. Prescribed medication lists were obtained and sorted based on

Topical application of Jaungo in atopic dermatitis patients: study protocol for a randomized, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common pruritic inflammatory skin disease with increasing prevalence. It can manifest with many different clinical phenotypes; however, in its chronic stage, hyperpigmentation, excoriation, lichenification, and dryness are the main symptoms. Jaungo comprises two herbs, Lithospermi radix and Angelica gigantis radix, and three carrier oils, and is an approved herbal ointment for xerosis cutis in Korea. In past studies, we demonstrated that Jaungo had anti-inflammatory and antiallergic activity in in vitro and in vivo AD models; however, there are few relev

Treating Psoriasis During Pregnancy: Safety and Efficacy of Treatments.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with a well-documented negative effect on the quality of life of affected patients. Psoriasis often occurs in the reproductive years, during which the issue of pregnancy needs to be addressed. The course of psoriasis during pregnancy is unpredictable, and many patients face the challenge of needing treatment during pregnancy. In this review we provide an overview of the key considerations for managing psoriasis in pregnant women, covering the potential effects of active psoriasis and co-morbid conditions on the health of the mother and fetus, as well

Reticular erythematous mucinosis: a review of patients' characteristics, associated conditions, therapy and outcome in 25 cases.

BACKGROUND: Reticular erythematous mucinosis (REM) is an uncommon disease, the nosology and specific characteristics of which are controversial because most reports deal with single cases or small series. OBJECTIVES: To describe the characteristics of patients with REM regarding demographics, clinical and pathological features, comorbidities, treatment and course. METHODS: A retrospective and prospective study was conducted on 25 patients diagnosed with REM in the setting of university-affiliated dermatology departments and dermatopathology centres. RESULTS: Of the 25 patients with REM, 16

Ex vivo demonstration of a synergistic effect of Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide on inflammatory acne lesions.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous follicle. Thanks to its ability to reduce both comedones and inflammatory lesions, the association of a retinoid and benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is now recommended for the treatment of acne. However, the mechanisms of action of this combined therapy on inflammatory acne lesions are not well understood. In an ex vivo immunohistochemistry study, we investigated the potential synergistic modulator effect of Adapalene associated with BPO on keratinocytes proliferation/differentiation and innate immunity in inflammatory acne lesions. We demonst

Cutaneous Adverse Reactions to IL-17 and IL-23 Inhibitors: A Clinical Review of Reaction Patterns.

INTRODUCTION: IL-17 and IL-23 inhibitors have transformed the management of moderate-to-severe psoriasis and other inflammatory diseases through targeted immune modulation. Although generally well tolerated, an expanding spectrum of cutaneous adverse reactions has been reported, ranging from common paradoxical eruptions to rare immune-mediated dermatoses that may mimic primary inflammatory or autoimmune conditions. OBJECTIVES: We present a narrative review of cutaneous adverse reactions associated with IL-17 and IL-23 inhibitors. This review aims to summarize reported reaction patterns, propo

A cross-sectional study comparing tumor profiles between military personnel and the general population: Insights from the NHANES database.

Military personnel are routinely exposed to a range of occupational and environmental hazards (including chemical agents, radiation, physical stress, and psychological trauma) that may uniquely influence their long-term health outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that such exposures could alter cancer risk profiles, yet comprehensive comparisons of tumor prevalence and distribution between military and civilian populations remain limited. Leveraging a nationally representative dataset, this study addresses this gap by systematically comparing cancer profiles between United States military vete
