Recombinant fiber-2 protein protects Muscovy ducks against duck adenovirus 3 (DAdV-3).

As a novel duck adenovirus 3 (DAdV-3) infection caused significant economic losses to the poultry industry in China, there is an urgent need to develop a safe and effective vaccine. In the research, fiber-1 and fiber-2 proteins were expressed and purified, respectively. To evaluate the immunogenicity of the two recombinant proteins, we investigated the IgY antibodies and virus-neutralizing antibodies in duck sera. The protective efficacy was evaluated by mortality, virus shedding and histopathological examinations after challenged with the DAdV-3. Results showed that the IgY antibody levels of

A survival analysis of the last great European plagues: The case of Nonantola (Northern Italy) in 1630.

This paper develops the first survival analysis of a large-scale mortality crisis caused by plague. For the time-to-event analyses we used the Cox proportional hazards regression model. Our case study is the town of Nonantola during the 1630 plague, which was probably the worst to affect Italy since the Black Death. Individual risk of death did not depend on sex, grew with age (peaking at ages 40-60 and then declining), was not affected by socio-economic status, and was positively associated with household size. We discuss these findings in light of the historical-demographic and palaeo-demogr

Distributed Optimal Consensus Over Resource Allocation Network and Its Application to Dynamical Economic Dispatch.

The resource allocation problem is studied and reformulated by a distributed interior point method via a -logarithmic barrier. By the facilitation of the graph Laplacian, a fully distributed continuous-time multiagent system is developed for solving the problem. Specifically, to avoid high singularity of the -logarithmic barrier at boundary, an adaptive parameter switching strategy is introduced into this dynamical multiagent system. The convergence rate of the distributed algorithm is obtained. Moreover, a novel distributed primal-dual dynamical multiagent system is designed in a smart grid s

Sickle cell disease in Africa: an overview of the integrated approach to health, research, education and advocacy in Tanzania, 2004-2016.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the single most important genetic cause of childhood mortality globally. Tanzania has one of the highest annual births of SCD individuals in the world, estimated to reach 11 000 births a year. Without intervention, 50-90% of children will die in childhood. However, cost-effective interventions have the potential to reduce childhood mortality by up to 70%. The effects of SCD are multi-dimensional, ranging from causing high morbidity and mortality, and reducing the quality of life, to imposing a high socio-economic burden on individuals, families and health systems.

Control of Redox Events by Dye Encapsulation Applied to Light-Driven Splitting of Hydrogen Sulfide.

Solar production of hydrogen by consuming low-value waste products is an attractive pathway that has both economic and environmental benefits. Inspired by the reactive pocket of enzymes, a synthetic platform to combine photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with sulfide oxidation in a one-pot process via control over the location of the electron-transfer steps is developed. The redox-active coordination vessel Ni-TFT, which has an octahedral pocket, encapsulates an organic dye to pre-organize for photocatalytic proton reduction via an oxidative quenching pathway using the nickel corners as catalyst

The Tao survivorship of schistosomes: implications for schistosomiasis control.

Schistosomiasis, caused by blood flukes of the genus Schistosoma, is a major public health problem which contributes substantially to the economic and financial burdens of many nations in the developing world. An array of survival strategies, such as the unique structure of the tegument which acts as a major host-parasite interface, immune modulation mechanisms, gene regulation, and apoptosis and self-renewal have been adopted by schistosome parasites over the course of long-term evolution with their mammalian definitive hosts. Recent generation of complete schistosome genomes together with nu

Pathophysiology of perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy - biomarkers, animal models and treatment perspectives.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is one of the leading pediatric neurological conditions causing long-term disabilities and socio-economical burdens. Nearly 20-50 % of asphyxiated newborns with HIE die within the newborn period and another third will develop severe health consequences and permanent handicaps. HIE is the result of severe systemic oxygen deprivation and reduced cerebral blood flow, commonly occurring in full-term infants. Hypoxic-ischemic changes trigger several molecular and cellular processes leading to cell death and inflammation. Generated reactive oxygen species attack

Transgenic shRNA pigs reduce susceptibility to foot and mouth disease virus infection.

Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is an economically devastating viral disease leading to a substantial loss to the swine industry worldwide. A novel alternative strategy is to develop pigs that are genetically resistant to infection. Here, we produce transgenic (TG) pigs that constitutively expressed FMDV-specific short interfering RNA (siRNA) derived from small hairpin RNA (shRNA). In vitro challenge of TG fibroblasts showed the shRNA suppressed viral growth. TG and non-TG pigs were challenged by intramuscular injection with 100 LD50 of FMDV. High fever, severe clinical signs of foot-and-m

Cell culture-based influenza vaccines: A necessary and indispensable investment for the future.

The traditional platform of using embryonated chicken eggs for the production of influenza vaccines has several drawbacks including the inability to meet the volume of required doses in the case of widespread epidemics and pandemics. Cell culture platforms have therefore been explored in the last 2 decades, and have attracted further attention following the H1N1 pandemic outbreak. This platform, while not the most economical for large-scale production, has several advantages, and can supplement the vaccine requirement when needed. Recent developments in production technologies have contributed

Molecular characterisation and functional analysis of LsChi2, a chitinase found in the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis salmonis, Krøyer 1838).

The salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis spp.) is an economically important parasite on Atlantic salmon reared in aquaculture globally. Production and degradation of chitin, a major component of the exoskeleton, is the target of some pesticides (Di/Teflubenzuron) used in management of lice on farmed fish. These chemicals inhibit molting of the salmon louse leading to the death of the parasite. We found three chitinases (LsChi1, LsChi2 and LsChi4) in the salmon louse genome. Sequence analysis and phylogeny showed that they belong to the GH18 type of chitinase group and show high sequence simil

Ebola virus disease: societal challenges and new treatments.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a zoonotic disease that causes severe haemorrhagic fever, with high fatality rates of up to 90% in humans. Today, there is no effective treatment available. Person-to-person transmission occurs through exposure to blood or body fluids, which can threaten other household members and first-line healthcare workers. The first cases of EVD in Guinea were identified on 22 March 2014. It was initially believed that this like previous outbreaks would be self-limiting. However, lack of public health infrastructure, delays in virus detection and late implementation of contro

Calcium ions are involved in egress of Babesia bovis merozoites from bovine erythrocytes.

Bovine babesiosis is a livestock disease known to cause economic losses in endemic areas. The apicomplexan parasite Babesia bovis is able to invade and destroy the host's erythrocytes leading to the serious pathologies of the disease, such as anemia and hemoglobinuria. Understanding the egress mechanisms of this parasite is therefore a key step to develop new therapeutic strategies. In this study, the possible involvement of Ca(2+) in the egress of B. bovis merozoites from infected erythrocytes was investigated. Egress was artificially induced in vitro using calcium ionophore A23187 and thapsi

Helicobacter pylori infection: new pathogenetic and clinical aspects.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infects more than half of the world's human population, but only 1% to 3% of infected people consequently develop gastric adenocarcinomas. The clinical outcome of the infection is determined by host genetic predisposition, bacterial virulence factors, and environmental factors. The association between H. pylori infection and chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, gastric cell carcinoma, and B cell mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma has been well established. With the exception of unexplained iron deficiency anemia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic

Prediabetes in South Indian rural adolescent school students.

Prediabetes is a condition with blood glucose levels higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Most people with prediabetes are asymptomatic but are considered to be at a high risk of developing heart disease and stroke. 140 students of both sexes between ages 14-18 years were given a predesigned questionnaire to obtain information on socio-economic status and family history of Diabetes mellitus. A fasting plasma glucose level was measured and 6.8% of students were in the prediabetic range (> 100 mg/dl). No significant correlation was found between fasting plasma gluc

Enrichment of copper as 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol complex by the combination of dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction/flame atomic absorption spectrometry.

A rapid, simple, selective, economical, and sensitive dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction methodology has been established for the preconcentration of copper (Cu) at trace levels. The Cu(II) was complexed with 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol; ethanol and carbon tetrachloride were used as disperser and extraction solvents, respectively. To obtain quantitative recovery of Cu(II), the effects of parameters influencing its extraction efficiency and subsequent determinations, i.e., pH, amount of complexing reagent, extraction time, and type and volume of disperser and extraction solvents, were exa

Early diagnosis and management are crucial in spondyloarthritis.

Spondyloarthritis raises considerable diagnostic challenges. The mean time from symptom onset to the definitive diagnosis was 8 years in classical studies. This diagnostic delay has a deleterious impact not only for the patient, but also potentially on the course of the disease and therefore on its social and economic costs. In addition, delays in diagnosis translate into delays in management. The main reason for diagnostic delays is that early classification criteria sets include marked radiographic changes, which require time to develop. New criteria are now available that should allow earli

Epidemiology of ocular toxoplasmosis.

Retinal infection with Toxoplasma gondii is the most important cause of posterior uveitis, whereby prevalence and incidence of ocular symptoms after infection depend on socio-economic factors and the circulating parasite genotypes. Ocular toxoplasmosis is more common in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean and parts of tropical Africa as compared to Europe and Northern America, and is quite rare in China. Ocular disease in South America is more severe than in other continents due to the presence of extremely virulent genotypes of the parasite. Drinking untreated water is considere

Parasitic infestations requiring surgical interventions.

Parasitic infestation is common in developing countries especially in Africa. Children are often more vulnerable to these infections. Many health problems result from these infestations, including malnutrition, iron-deficiency anemia, surgical morbidities, and even impaired cognitive function and educational achievement. Surgical intervention may be needed to treat serious complications caused by some of these parasites. Amoebic colitis and liver abscess caused by protozoan infections; intestinal obstruction, biliary infestation with cholangitis and liver abscess, and pancreatitis caused by As

Shortened treatment duration of glucocorticoid-induced skin atrophy in rats.

Glucocorticoids (GCs) belong to the most widely used anti-inflammatory drugs at all. However, their topical use is limited by their side effect potential, with skin atrophy being the most prominent one. Thus, determining the atrophogenic potential of novel compounds is of importance for drug development. Currently, the most frequently performed model in the base and pharmaceutical research is the hr/hr rat model of GC-induced skin atrophy that lasts for 19 days. In this study, we analysed statistically skin atrophy experiments retrospectively to ascertain (i) the earliest time-point, at which

Subgrouping of A and AB blood groups in Indian blood centres: is it required?

Anti A1 antibody in the serum of A2 and A2B individuals is rare but when present can have laboratory and clinical significance. Routine subgrouping of all A and AB blood groups in blood centres in India is difficult due to economic constraints and has always been a point of debate. This study thus brings out the prevalence of anti A1 antibody and the clinical significance related to its presence. The results of the study showed a low prevalence of anti A1 antibody and when present, it had a low thermal amplitude and titre. Further, no blood group discrepancy or problems during compatibility te
