The Impact of Vocal Task on Voice Acoustics, Effort and Discomfort Following Submandibular Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) offers a potential adjuvant to traditional voice therapy for individuals with dysphonia. The type of vocal task to implement in conjunction with electrical stimulation to achieve maximal therapeutic benefit is unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the impact of tasks on voice outcomes. METHODS: Nineteen vocally-healthy adult females, between 23 and 27 years of age (Ave: 23.8, SD: 1.13), participated in the study. 15 participants completed all three 30-minute sessions, and four completed at least one session. NMES was paired

Enhancing DNAPL removal from low permeability zone using electrical resistance heating with pulsed direct current.

Electrical resistance heating (ERH) has been widely applied for contaminant remediation in heterogeneous sites especially when low permeability zones exist, yet requires high energy input. To address the low energy-efficiency of ERH using conventional alternating current (AC), pulsed direct current (PDC) obtained by current rectification was introduced for heating to enhance dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) migration in low permeability zones. Here we showed the proof-of-concept in a lab-scale two-dimensional heterogeneous sand system (40 cm × 30 cm) with trichloroethylene (TCE) DNAPL in

Electric Blue: Molecular Evolution of Three-Finger Toxins in the Long-Glanded Coral Snake Species Calliophis bivirgatus.

The genus Calliophis is the most basal branch of the family Elapidae and several species in it have developed highly elongated venom glands. Recent research has shown that C. bivirgatus has evolved a seemingly unique toxin (calliotoxin) that produces spastic paralysis in their prey by acting on the voltage-gated sodium (NaV) channels. We assembled a transcriptome from C. bivirgatus to investigate the molecular characteristics of these toxins and the venom as a whole. We find strong confirmation that this genus produces the classic elapid eight-cysteine three-finger toxins, that δδ-elapitoxins

Electrical impedance tomography detects changes in ventilation after airway clearance in spinal muscular atrophy type I.

The effect of mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MIE) for airway clearance in patients with spinal muscular atrophy type I (SMA-I) on the distribution of ventilation in the lung is unknown, as is the duration of its beneficial effects. A pilot study to investigate the feasibility of using three dimensional (3-D) electrical impedance tomography (EIT) images to estimate lung volumes pre- and post-MIE for assessing the effectiveness of mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MIE) was conducted in 6 pediatric patients with SMA-I in the neuromuscular clinic at Children's Hospital Colorado. EIT dat

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation for a dysphagic stroke patient with cardiac pacemaker using magnet mode change: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic interference (EMI), means disturbance to the operation of implanted electrical devices caused by external sources. If cardiac pacemaker is implanted into the body, the risk of EMI should be considered when performing neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). So far, no case has been reported that clinical magnets are used to safely manage the EMI risk of patients with cardiac pacemaker in NMES. CASE SUMMARY: A 72-year-old male with swallowing disorder due to pure motor lacunar syndrome was transferred to rehabilitation department six days after the symptom onset

Evaluation of regional ventilation by electric impedance tomography during percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy in neurocritical care: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) has become a widely performed technique in neurocritical care, which is however known to be accompanied by some risks to the patient. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the derecruitment effects of PDT with the electric impedance tomography (EIT) during the PDT procedure in neurocritical care. METHODS: The prospective observational pilot study investigated 11 adult, intubated, mechanically ventilated patients with acute brain disease. We recorded EIT data to determine regional ventilation delay standard deviation (RVD SD), compli

Encoding strategy mediates the effect of electrical stimulation over posterior parietal cortex on visual short-term memory.

Over past decades, converging neuroimaging and electrophysiological findings have suggested a crucial role of posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in supporting the storage capacity of visual short-term memory (VSTM). Moreover, a few recent studies have shown that electrical stimulation over PPC can enhance VSTM capacity, making it a promising method for improving VSTM function. However, the reliability of these results is still in question because null findings have also been observed. Among studies that reported significant effects, some found increased VSTM capacity only in people with low capac

Effects of Electrode Configurations and Injected Current Intensity on the Electrical Field of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: A Simulation Study.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technology that modulates the excitability of the brain by delivering weak electric currents to the brain via scalp electrodes. Electrode configuration and injected current intensity are two important parameters in the tDCS design. This simulation study examined three commercially available electrode configurations, i.e. conventional low definition rectangular pad, high-definition Disc, and high-definition 4 x 1 with different electrode distances and different injected current intensity. Simulation results show

Vagus Nerve Stimulation Provides Multiyear Improvements in Autonomic Function and Cardiac Electrical Stability in the ANTHEM-HF Study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (HFrEF) experience long-term deterioration of autonomic function and cardiac electrical stability linked to increased mortality risk. The Autonomic Neural Regulation Therapy to Enhance Myocardial Function in Heart Failure (ANTHEM-HF) trial reported improved heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate turbulence (HRT) and reduced T-wave alternans (TWA) after 12 months of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). We investigated whether the benefits of chronic VNS persist in the long term. METHODS AND RESULTS: E

Xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol improves atrial electrical remodeling in diabetic rats by inhibiting CaMKII/NCX signaling.

AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia which is associated with higher risk of stroke, heart failure and all-cause mortality. Abnormal Ca2+ handling in diabetes mellitus (DM) can cause delayed depolarization involved with increased NCX activity. Complicated mechanisms are involved in atrial remodeling, of which CaMKII may be a key node signal. Therefore, we intend to explore whether CaMKII activation induces atrial electrical remodeling by regulating NCX expression in this study. MAIN METHODS: Adult male SD rats were used to establish a diabetic rat model, divided into three gr

Step capacitive array sensor to trigger stimulation on Functional Electrical Stimulators devices for Drop Foot: Preliminary results.

In this work, a new custom wireless capacitive step sensor and a real-time algorithm are proposed to detect the start and end of the swing phase of the gait to trigger the stimulation in Functional Electrical Stimulator devices (FES) for Drop Foot. For this, an array of capacitive pressure sensors was designed to detect patterns of the gait swing phase through the Heel Center of Pressure (HCOP). The proposed system recognized all the events with an average error of 20.86±0.02[ms] for the heel strike (initial contact) and 27.60±0.03[ms] for the heel-off (final contact) compared with lower-back

A pulsed current electric field alters protein expression creating a wound healing phenotype in human skin cells.

Aim: Pulsed current (PC) electric field (EF) devices promote healing in chronic wounds but the underpinning mechanisms are largely unknown. The gap between clinical evidence and mechanistic understanding limits device uptake in clinics. Materials & methods: Migration, proliferation and gene/protein expression profiles were investigated in the presence/absence of PCEF, in skin: keratinocytes (NHK); dermal fibroblasts (HDF); dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMEC) and macrophages (THP-1). Results: While PCEF had little effect on migration or proliferation, it significantly altered the exp

Effect of high pressure and pulsed electric field on denaturation and allergenicity of Pru p 3 protein from peach.

The effect of high pressure (HP) and pulsed electric field (PEF) treatments combined or not with heat on denaturation and allergenicity of Pru p 3, the major allergenic protein of peach, was studied. Denaturation of Pru p 3, determined by ELISA using rabbit IgG, occurred when the protein was treated at 500 and 600 MPa at 20 °C and at 400 MPa at 50 °C. PEF treatment at 25 kV/cm at 50 °C denatures Pru p 3. Allergenicity of Pru p 3 was estimated in vitro by a competitive fluorescent immunoassay using three pools of sera from peach allergic patients. Any treatment applied did not show to influence

Difference in Pain and Discomfort of Comparable Wrist Movements Induced by Magnetic or Electrical Stimulation for Peripheral Nerves in the Dorsal Forearm.

PURPOSE: Both repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) and transcutaneous electrical current stimulation (TES) could elicit the limb movements; it is still unclear how subjective sensation is changed according to the amount of limb movements. We investigated the pain and discomfort induced by newly developed rPMS and TES of peripheral nerves in the dorsal forearm. METHODS: The subjects were 12 healthy adults. The stimulus site was the right dorsal forearm; thus, when stimulated, wrist dorsiflexion was induced. The rPMS was delivered by the new stimulator, Pathleader at 10 stimulus in

Electric field-induced crossover from 3D to 2D topological defects in a nematic liquid crystal: experimental verification.

A substrate was patterned with two pairs of half-integer strength topological defects, (+1/2, +1/2) and (+1/2, -1/2). In a sufficiently thick cell, a disclination line runs in an arch above the substrate connecting the two half integer defects within each pair. The director around the disclination line for the like-sign pair must rotate in 3D, whereas for the opposite-sign defect pair the director lies in the xy-plane parallel to the substrate. For a negative dielectric anisotropy nematic, an electric field applied normal to the substrate drives the director into the xy-plane, forcing the arch
