Epidemiological and Histopathological Characteristics of Fetuses with Congenital Disorders: A Study in Greece.

Congenital malformations constitute a major public health issue. Nonetheless, Greece does not participate in the European network of congenital anomalies. To examine the epidemiology of congenital abnormalities and investigate possible factors associated with their development, autopsies were performed on 649 fetuses referred from three healthcare facilities in Thessaloniki during 1992-2008. Adequate statistical analysis methods were implemented. Birth defects were found in 256 fetuses (39.5%)-primarily related to the musculoskeletal (17.3%), nervous (14.5%), cardiovascular (12.5%) and urinary

Regional expert opinion: Management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey.

Although epidemiological data on heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) are scarce in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) region, Lancet Global Burden of Disease estimated the prevalence of HF in the MENAT region in 2019 to be 0.78%, versus 0.71% globally. There is also a high incidence of HFpEF risk factors and co-morbidities in the region, including coronary artery disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, anaemia and chronic kidney disease. For instance, 14.5-16.2% of adults in the region reportedly have diabetes, versus 7.0% in Europe. Together with increa

The epidemiology of apnoea of prematurity.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Many premature infants less than 37 weeks gestational age (GA), and almost all infants less than 28 weeks GA, will experience apnoea of prematurity (AOP)-a cessation of respiration for 20 or more seconds (or less than 20 s if accompanied by other signs). Because the treatment options for AOP are so limited, we explore its epidemiology, with the ultimate hope of learning how to decrease its incidence. COMMENT: Although AOP usually resolves with maturation of the respiratory system, many short- and long-term negative effects are correlated statistically with AOP (al

Seroprevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle from Unai, Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread protozoan parasite that causes infections in animals and humans. The presence of tissue cysts in cattle musculature evidences their epidemiological significance in transmission to humans. The present study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of and risk factors of T. gondii seropositivity in beef cattle in the municipality of Unaí, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. Bovine blood samples (n = 612) were collected from 31 herds. Risk factors associated with the animal-level and herd-level seroprevalence were analysed using a questionnaire that investigates the epidemio

The Iranian Newborn Multiples Registry (IRNMR): a registry protocol.

Purpose: Over the last decades, several twin/multiples registries have been developed worldwide, mostly concentrated in Europe and high-income countries (HICs). In Iran, we lack accurate nationwide epidemiological and biobank data on twins. We established the Iranian Newborn Multiples Registry (IRNMR) to evaluate the role of genetics and environmental factors in the variation of phenotypes among newborn monozygotic (MZ) and dizygotic (DZ) twin pairs. IRNMR is a multicenter hospital-based registry. Materials and methods: In the pilot phase, we collected epidemiological data from multiples born

Phthalates exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children: a systematic review of epidemiological literature.

Epidemiological studies have proven that children mental health can be affected by environmental pollutants which are believed to be visible in the form of psychological disorder later in their childhood. Moreover, the effects of children mental health are evidently clear in the case of phthalates which have been observed to increase psychological disorder, specifically attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Hence, the present study aims to conduct a systematic review and provide an overview of the existing literature on the association between urinary phthalate metabolite concentrat

[Air pollution (particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide) and skin aging].

It has recently been discovered that air pollution can contribute to skin aging. This conclusion is based on both epidemiological and mechanistic evidence. Specifically, exposure to ambient relevant particulate matter and to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is associated with an increased risk to develop facial pigment spots. In addition, genetic studies indicate the involvement of gene-environment interactions because women carrying certain genetic variants of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signaling pathway have a higher risk to develop facial pigment spots in response to exposure to particulate

Development and comparison of forecast models of hand-foot-mouth disease with meteorological factors.

Hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute intestinal virus infectious disease which is one of major public health problems in mainland China. Previous studies indicated that HFMD was significantly influenced by climatic factors, but the associated factors were different in different areas and few study on HFMD forecast models was conducted. Here, we analyzed epidemiological characteristics of HFMD in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province and constructed three forecast models. Overall, a total of 32554 HFMD cases were reported and 12 cases deceased in Yiwu City, Zhejiang Province. The incidence of HFMD
