Understanding Q Fever Risk to Humans in Minnesota Through the Analysis of Spatiotemporal Trends.

Q fever is a widely distributed, yet, neglected zoonotic disease, for which domestic ruminants are considered the main reservoirs in some countries. There are still many gaps in our knowledge of its epidemiology, and the source of sporadic cases is often not determined. In this study, we show how Q fever surveillance data in combination with information routinely collected by government agencies in Minnesota during 1997 to 2015 can be used to characterize patterns of occurrence of Q fever illnesses and detect variables potentially associated with increased human illness. Cluster analysis and B

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals and uterine fibroids.

Uterine fibroids are the most frequent gynecologic tumor, affecting 70% to 80% of women over their lifetime. Although these tumors are benign, they can cause significant morbidity and may require invasive treatments such as myomectomy and hysterectomy. Many risk factors for these tumors have been identified, including environmental exposures to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as genistein and diethylstilbestrol. Uterine development may be a particularly sensitive window to environmental exposures, as some perinatal EDC exposures have been shown to increase tumorigenesis in both rode

IL-1 receptor antagonist ameliorates inflammasome-dependent inflammation in murine and human cystic fibrosis.

Dysregulated inflammasome activation contributes to respiratory infections and pathologic airway inflammation. Through basic and translational approaches involving murine models and human genetic epidemiology, we show here the importance of the different inflammasomes in regulating inflammatory responses in mice and humans with cystic fibrosis (CF), a life-threatening disorder of the lungs and digestive system. While both contributing to pathogen clearance, NLRP3 more than NLRC4 contributes to deleterious inflammatory responses in CF and correlates with defective NLRC4-dependent IL-1Ra product

[Comorbidity in psoriasis].

Psoriasis is a systemic chronic inflammatory disease associated with comorbidity. Many epidemiological studies have shown that psoriasis is associated with psoriatic arthritis as well as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Furthermore, obesity and psychological diseases such as depression and anxiety disorders are linked with psoriasis and play a central role in its management. The association of psoriasis and its comorbidity can be partly explained by genetic and pathophysiological mechanisms. Approximately 40 psoriasis susceptibility loci have been described with the majority linked to th

The relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms among older gay men: the moderating role of sense of belonging with gay friends.

BACKGROUND: Living alone is a risk factor for depressive symptoms among older adults, although it is unclear if it is a risk factor for older gay men. A sense of belonging to the gay community is protective and might compensate for living alone. This research investigated whether a sense of belonging with gay friends weakened the relationship between living alone and depressive symptoms among older gay men. METHODS: A community sample of 160 Australian gay men aged 65-92 years completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and two visual analogue scales assessing a sense of b

Geographically weighted discriminant analysis of environmental conditions associated with Rift Valley fever outbreaks in South Africa.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a zoonotic arboviral infection that has occurred across Africa and parts of the Middle East. Geographically weighted discriminant analysis (GWDA) is a spatially-adaptive extension of traditional discriminant analysis (DA) which has rarely been applied to infectious disease epidemiology research. This study compares the classification performance of GWDA and traditional DA when used to distinguish between locations where livestock are at risk or are not at risk for acquiring RVF virus (RVFV) using 699 case reports of RVF (affecting 18,894 animals) from two outbreaks i

Suicidality and its relationship with depression, alcohol disorders and childhood experiences of violence: results from the ESEMeD study.

BACKGROUND: Suicidality constitutes a major health concern in many countries. The aim of the present paper was to analyse 10 of its risk factors and their interdependence. METHODS: Data on suicidality, mental disorders and experience of childhood violence was collected from 8796 respondents in the European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (ESEMeD). The CIDI was used to assess mental disorders. Individuals were randomly divided into two subgroups. In one, a Graphical Markov model to predict suicidality was constructed, in the second, predictors were cross-validated. RESULTS: Life

The pathogenesis of human cytomegalovirus.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a recognized cause of disease in the fetus, the allograft recipient and AIDS patients. More recently, it has been recognized as a pathogen for those admitted to intensive care units, for the elderly and for the general population. The epidemiology and molecular and cellular pathology of this virus are summarized to provide an overarching model of pathogenesis, able to account for these varying clinical presentations. In brief, HCMV has the potential to spread in the bloodstream to all organs, but only produces overt disease if the viral load increases to high le

Helminth Therapy for MS.

In the last 50 years, environmental factors such as helminth infections have been proposed to explain why autoimmunity is less prevalent in the developing world; this proposal has been termed the hygiene or old friends hypothesis. The epidemiology of MS shows an inverse correlation with helminth infections. Positive effects of helminths in animal models of MS and observational studies in people with MS naturally infected with helminths suggest that those organisms can act as immune regulators and led to clinical trials of helminth therapy. The goal of helminth therapy is to introduce parasitic

Depressive symptom trajectories during and after adjuvant treatment for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The course of depressive symptoms during and after breast cancer treatment is not well understood. PURPOSE: We identified patient subgroups based on distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms and determined whether subgroups could be distinguished by personal characteristics and coping strategies. METHODS: Breast cancer patients completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale on clinically meaningful occasions and during the posttreatment period. The Illness Management Questionnaire was completed prior to treatment. RESULTS: A three-class mixture model provided

The role of psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders in functional dyspepsia.

In this Review, after a brief historical introduction, we first provide an overview of epidemiological studies that demonstrate an association between functional dyspepsia and psychological traits, states or psychiatric disorders. These studies suggest an important intrinsic role for psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders, especially anxiety and depression, in the aetiopathogenesis of functional dyspepsia, in addition to their putative influence on health-care-seeking behaviour. Second, we describe pathophysiological evidence on how psychosocial factors and psychiatric disorders might

Anomalies in the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Brazil.

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main species involved in the epidemiological cycle of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. This species shows a wide geographic distribution and belongs to a group that has 2 setae in the paramere with the curved tips towards the apex of this structure among other characteristics. Morphological characters in the genitalia of phlebotomines are essential for correct identification of species. The aim of this study was to report the finding of unilateral and bilateral anomalies in the paramere of L. longipalpis males collected in Várzea da Palma municipality, Minas Gerai

Hepatitis B infection increases the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health problem and the association between HBV infection and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is unclear. The primary aim of our study was to evaluate the association between HBV infection assessed by a positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and the incidence of NHL and subtypes using a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies. The random effects model was used to calculate the outcome. Our search yielded 17 case-control and 5 cohort studies, including over 40,000 NHL cases. HBV infected individuals had an OR of 2.24 (95% CI 1.80-2.78; p ≤ 0.

Evaluation of occupational exposure to magnetic fields and motor neuron disease mortality in a population-based cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiologic evidence for the association between electromagnetic fields and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the most common form of motor neuron disease (MND), has been inconclusive. We evaluated the association between electromagnetic fields and MND among workers in occupations potentially exposed to magnetic fields METHODS: MND mortality (ICD-9 335.2) was examined in the National Longitudinal Mortality Study using multivariable proportional hazards models. Occupational exposure to magnetic fields was determined on the basis of a population-based job-exposure matrix. Age at entry

Alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

The myocardial depressant effects of excessive ethanol consumption have long been known. Excessive alcohol intake is reported in a wide range (3-40%) of patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy; furthermore, chronic excessive alcohol consumption may lead to progressive and chronic cardiac dysfunction and can be a possible cause of dilated cardiomyopathy, referred to as alcoholic cardiomyopathy (ACM). The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying ACM are poorly understood. Excessive alcohol consumption has been associated with left-ventricular myocyte loss in some animal models but not in

Role for TNF in atherosclerosis? Lessons from autoimmune disease.

Inflammatory pathways have been implicated in the initiation and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Accelerated atherosclerosis has been described in patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, disproportionate to individuals' detectable traditional vascular risk factors. This finding suggests that other pathways associated with inflammation might account for increased vascular risk in such diseases. Highly specific biologic agents can precisely block the activity of cytokines generated during inflammatory cascades; the effects of these inflammatory moi

A frailty-model-based approach to estimating the age-dependent penetrance function of candidate genes using population-based case-control study designs: an application to data on the BRCA1 gene.

The population-based case-control study design is perhaps one of, if not the most, commonly used designs for investigating the genetic and environmental contributions to disease risk in epidemiological studies. Ages at onset and disease status of family members are routinely and systematically collected from the participants in this design. Considering age at onset in relatives as an outcome, this article is focused on using the family history information to obtain the hazard function, i.e., age-dependent penetrance function, of candidate genes from case-control studies. A frailty-model-based

Trivalent chromium inhibits protein glycosylation and lipid peroxidation in high glucose-treated erythrocytes.

Epidemiological studies have shown lower levels of chromium among men with diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with healthy control subjects. The mechanism by which chromium may decrease the incidence of CVD and insulin resistance is not known. Using erythrocytes as a model, this study demonstrates that chromium inhibits the glycosylation of proteins and oxidative stress, both risk factors in the development of CVD. Erythrocytes were treated with high levels of glucose (mimicking diabetes) in the presence or absence of chromium chloride in the medium at 37 degrees C for 24 hours

Yellow fever vaccination: some thoughts on how much is enough [Vaccine 23 (2005) 3908-3914].

In a recently published article in this journal, Massad et al. contraindicates yellow fever vaccination to persons 60 years or older, considering that the risk of serious adverse events is higher for this age class. The conclusion was based on the input of available data on age-related probabilities of developing serious adverse events in the United States, as well on other data not firmly established. We consider such contraindication inadequate, because the data input has limitations, higher letality of wild-type yellow fever infection in older adults, risk of introduction of yellow fever by
