In general the posttraumatic enophthalmos results from an enlargement of the orbit mainly in its dorsal part. The surgical correction must be performed in this particular part and calvarian bone grafts are very suitable for the procedure. In 20 patients the aesthetic appearance could significantly be approved. Anyhow functional aspects, mainly the binocular vision, must not be neglected.

Both the aesthetics and function of the final restoration can be greatly enhanced by various surgical procedures. Some are very predictable, and others are still in the developmental stages. This review is divided into three basic categories: aesthetic root coverage; crown lengthening; and ridge augmentation procedures.

A prospective assessment of the complications of submucous resection is presented. Preoperative photographs were taken and a post-operative assessment was carried out at a minimum time of 2 years by questionnaire and photographs. No examples of significant cosmetic changes were found.

Autogenous bone grafts from the ilium are frequently harvested for purposes of bone union and/or stability. Although some donor site complications may be unavoidable, awareness of the anatomy and complications may aid in planning the approach and minimizing the risks. Documented donor site complications include pain, nerve and arterial injury, peritoneal perforation, sacroiliac joint instability, and herniation of abdominal contents through defects in the ilium. Strict observation of relevant anatomic considerations will help in avoiding these complications.

Median sternotomy is the incision of choice to allow access to the anterior mediastinum, heart, or both lungs. The vertical skin incision leaves an unsightly scar for many female patients. A bilateral submammary horizontal skin incision with dissection of a flap including the subcutaneous tissue and breasts allows exposure of the sternum so that a median sternotomy can be performed. If not treated correctly, injuries to the lateral part of the face can result in permanent mimetic disturbances. Since the final results of such treatment are often determined by the initial measures taken, close adherence to several basic principles for emergency surgical treatment of injuries to the parotid gland and facial nerve is imperative. To ensure optimal conditions for a successful follow-up nerve plasty, a special method of marking the nerve ends with silver clips and silicone tubes is recommended.

Between 1964 and 1970 the authors implanted Hydron gel in 62 patients with nose malformations. The cosmetic defects most frequently operated on were the saddle, and scoliosis of the nasal dorsum. By the end of 1973, 39 of the total number of cases were checked again. In two cases, the gel had to be removed shortly after the operation because of local inflammatory changes. No signs of hypersensitivity could be detected. Calcifications were detected by x-ray examination in 54.2% of the cases.
