A 51-year-old man received cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine and prednisone in the treatment of a small-cell undifferentiated lymphoma. Two years later, he developed a rapidly progressive neurological syndrome characterized by a decline in alertness, deafness, blindness and paraplegia. In most cases of bilateral cataract, a causative genetic mutation can be identified, with autosomal dominant inheritance being most common in 44% of cases. PURPOSE: Glaucoma is a frequent and often severe problem in patients needing keratoprosthesis (KPro) surgery. Standard glaucoma shunts in these cases often develop a very dense capsule that obstructs flow and causes intraocular pressure elevation. Therefore, we developed shunts that deliver aqueous to distant epithelialized cavities where an obstructing capsule is less likely to form.
