BACKGROUND: Evidence supports a modest positive association between alcohol intake and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC); however, knowledge regarding mechanisms underlying the association is scarce. Investigation of lipidomic metabolites may provide mechanistic insights into this association.
METHODS: We measured 611 lipid species across 14 lipid classes in serum samples collected up to 24 years before PDAC diagnosis in 2 nested case-control studies (706 matched sets) within American and Finnish cohorts. We conducted cross-sectional analyses using multivariable linear regressions to ex

Malolactic fermentation (MLF) plays a key role in regulating acidity, microbial stability, and aroma development in red wine. Indigenous Lactiplantibacillus plantarum isolates were assessed for their potential as malolactic starter cultures, and their role in mixed fermentation with Oenococcus oeni was investigated under different inoculation strategies during Cabernet Sauvignon winemaking. Sixty isolates were screened for ethanol tolerance, β-glucosidase activity, and malolactic performance, and three strains (C10, B16, and D30) were selected for microvinification trials. Mixed MLF was associ

Liver diseases, encompassing conditions such as cirrhosis, present a substantial global health challenge with diverse etiologies, including viral infections, alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The exploration of natural compounds as therapeutic agents has gained traction, notably the herbal remedy milk thistle (Silybum marianum), with its active extract, silymarin, demonstrating remarkable antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties in extensive preclinical investigations. It can protect healthy liver cells or those that have not yet sustained permanent damage

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) causes fetal growth restrictions. A major driver of fetal growth deficits is maternal metabolic disruption; this is under-investigated following PAE. Untargeted metabolomics on the dam and fetus exposed to alcohol (ALC) revealed that the hepatic metabolome of ALC and control (CON) dams were distinct, whereas that of ALC and CON fetuses were similar. Alcohol reduced maternal hepatic glucose content and enriched essential amino acid (AA) catabolites, N-acetylated AA products, urea content, and free fatty acids. These alterations suggest an attempt to minimize the

OBJECTIVE: Rosacea is a common inflammatory cutaneous condition with a complex yet unknown etiopathogenesis. Diet and certain food items are known to trigger or worsen rosacea symptoms, but conflicting and often inconsistent advice is given to patients regarding this link. We provide an up-to-date literature review on the relationship between rosacea and diet.
METHODS: Using the keywords "alcohol," "diet," "flushing," "food," "inflammation," "rosacea," "skin-gut axis" and "spice" we systemically searched the databases PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE for English-language articles in July 2020.

Cirrhosis is a condition that arises as a result of chronic liver damage, typically over many years. It is characterised by fibrosis and nodularity of the liver parenchyma. Cirrhosis interferes with the normal functions of the liver, reducing its ability to produce proteins, which can lead to coagulopathy, low serum albumin and raised bilirubin. The incidence of cirrhosis is rising in the UK, this can primarily be attributed to increasing levels of alcohol consumption and obesity. Mortality from cirrhosis is also rising. Common causes of chronic liver disease include alcohol, non-alcoholic fat

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiological data suggest that non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with aortic valve sclerosis (AVS), an emerging risk factor for adverse cardiovascular outcomes, in nondiabetic and type 2 diabetic individuals. To date, nobody has investigated the association between NAFLD and AVS in people with type 2 diabetes, a group of individuals in which the prevalence of these two diseases is high.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We recruited 180 consecutive type 2 diabetic patients without ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease, hepatic diseases or excess

OBJECTIVE: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and gallstone disease (GSD) share some of the same risk factors. The association between NAFLD and GSD was inconsistent. Moreover, there are no studies on the association between GSD and the severity of NAFLD in the literature. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the severity of NAFLD and GSD in a Taiwanese population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12,033 subjects were enrolled. The diagnoses of GSD and NAFLD were based on the finding of abdominal ultrasonography. The severity of NAFLD was divided into mild, m

The prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies in Chinese patients with HBsAg-negative chronic liver diseases was studied retrospectively. Anti-HCV was detected by two different ELISAs. In 97 patients with HBsAg-negative chronic liver disease, 26 (27%) were anti-HCV positive. Of 157 control subjects, only 1 (0.6%) was anti-HCV positive (P less than 0.001). Anti-HCV was detected in 18 of 27 (67%) patients with post-transfusion non-A, non-B (PTNANB) chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis, 5 of 25 (20%) patients with cryptogenic chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis, 2 of 33 (6%) patients with alcoholic liver disease, 1

Metabolic-inflammatory syndrome represents a major global health challenge, closely linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The core of these disorders involves remodeling of metabolic pathways under nutritional stress and the ensuing chronic inflammatory vicious cycle. This review systematically examines the mechanisms by which metabolic reprogramming drives metabolic-inflammatory syndrome, revealing the significant role of the gut microbiota in this process. Furthermore, it evaluates current metabolic-inflammatory syndrome early-warning sys

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a prevalent source for stem cell therapy and play a crucial role in modulating both innate and adaptive immune responses. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by the accumulation of triglycerides in liver cells and involves immune system activation, leading to histological changes, tissue damage, and clinical symptoms. A recent publication by Jiang et al, highlighted the potential of MSCs to mitigate in NAFLD progression by targeting various molecular pathways, including glycolipid metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress, endoplasmic r

Metabolic syndrome is a complex disorder defined by a cluster of interconnected factors including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia which increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and other related diseases. Histamine, as a biogenic amine, participates in various physiological processes. Increasing evidence suggests histamine plays critical roles in Metabolic syndrome as well as its associated diseases by interacting with four histamine receptors. In this review, we summarize the functions

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects 25% of the global population. About 20% have a normal body mass index (BMI) and a variant known as lean NAFLD. Unlike typical NAFLD cases associated with obesity and diabetes, lean NAFLD causes liver disease by mechanisms not related to excess weight or insulin resistance. Genetic disorders are among the major factors in developing lean NAFLD, and genome-wide association studies have identified several genes associated with the condition. This review aims to increase awareness by describing the genetic markers linked to NAFLD and the defects in

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming the most important risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Understanding the progression of benign diseases to HCC is crucial for early prevention and reversal of malignant transformation. Alternative splicing (AS) of RNA plays a role in the pathogenicity, initiation, and transformation of liver disease. We summarize the changes or mutations in the activity of splicing factors in NAFLD and HCC, as well as the impact of AS mediated by epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, RNA methylation, histone modification, and protein

Acute pancreatitis results in high morbidity and mortality. Gallstones and alcoholism are considered leading causes of acute pancreatitis. However, increasing prevalence of obesity, diabetes and lifestyle choices has resulted in Hypertriglyceridaemia induced pancreatitis (HTAP) becoming more common. HTAP is said to be more severe than other causes. The treatment options available vary including intravenous (IV) insulin, heparin, plasma exchange, fibrates, niacin, omega three fatty acids and dietary restrictions. This is a case report of a patient presenting with HTAP and the dilemma treating p

The prevalence of obesity has reached alarming levels, which is considered a major risk factor for several metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes (T2D), non-alcoholic fatty liver, atherosclerosis, and ischemic cardiovascular disease. Obesity-induced chronic, low-grade inflammation may lead to insulin resistance, and it is well-recognized that macrophages play a major role in such inflammation. In the current review, the molecular mechanisms underlying macrophages, low-grade tissue inflammation, insulin resistance, and T2D are described. Also, the role of macrophages in obesity-induced i

We report a case of anorexia nervosa (AN) with gastroesophageal varices (GEV) in a 36-year-old woman. The patient presented to our hospital with progressive bloating due to severe ascites. She had no history of alcohol intake. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy and enhanced computed tomography revealed GEV and multiple hepatic nodules, respectively. The histological examination of a liver biopsy specimen revealed similar features to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and showed hyperplastic nodules that were suspected to be related to the uneven distribution of portal blood flow in the liver. In conclus

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is characterised by the development of intrapulmonary arteriovenous blood shunts and vascular dilatation with consequent hypoxaemia, usually in the context of end-stage liver disease (ESLD). The estimated incidence of HPS in ESLD has been reported to be 13%-47%. Chronic liver disease has been described in patients with hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction, mainly in the form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease due to metabolic syndrome, with occasional progression to cirrhosis. We report a challenging case of a 27-year-old man with a background of hypopituitarism
