Predicting the absence of World Health Organization fungal priority pathogens in agricultural soils using machine learning and ITS metabarcoding.

Environmental fungal pathogens relevant to human and animal health pose significant risks, particularly in regions with intensive farming and climate variability. Several taxa detected in Thailand's clinical and environmental samples, such as Candida tropicalis, Talaromyces marneffei, and Mucor spp., are listed in the World Health Organization (WHO) Fungal Priority Pathogen List (FPPL). This study integrated next-generation sequencing (NGS) metabarcoding and decision tree models to characterize fungal communities and identify environmental conditions associated with pathogen absence across 18

Evaluating the impact of immunization with the "pan-fungal" vaccine, NXT-2, on the gut mycobiome and microbiome in non-human primates (NHPs).

Fungal infections remain a significant public health concern with high mortality, morbidity, and increasing associated health costs. This burden is projected to rise due to expansion of at-risk populations, limited therapeutics, increasing drug resistance, and the emergence of new fungal pathogens. Even with these challenges, there are currently no approved vaccines. We previously developed a "pan-fungal" vaccine candidate, NXT-2, that confers protection against multiple invasive fungal infections such as pulmonary aspergillosis, pneumocystosis, and invasive candidiasis, as well as non-invasiv

The association between preschoolers' retinal microcirculation and the indoor microbial environment: results of the ENVIRONAGE birth cohort.

Early life environmental microbiota may influence normative development. Here, we explore the associations between the residential indoor mi … culation, significant for CRAE: β = -0.28; CI:-0.53;-0.04 (bacteria) and β = -0.27; CI:-0.50,-0.03 (fungi). Conversely, retinal microcirculation was directly associated with Gram-positive bacterial loads, significant for TI (β = 0.44; CI:0.06,0.81). These associations were stronger among boys. No consistent associations were observed for diversity. Conc …

Bioaerosols from outdoor wastewater treatment facilities: dispersal behavior, exposure risks and protection strategies.

Bioaerosols released into the atmosphere from wastewater treatment processes can contaminate the surrounding air environment and threaten the health of people living in the vicinity of wastewater treatment plant. Bioaerosols had migratory properties and are easily diffused and spread in the air. This paper investigated the escape characteristics of bioaerosols from outdoor wastewater treatment facilities, simulated their dispersion using Gaussian plume model, and assessed the risk of exposure via the inhalation route. The results showed that the fugitive concentrations of airborne bacterial ae

Emergence of fungal hybrids - Potential threat to humans.

Fungal hybrids arise through the interbreeding of distinct species. This hybridization process fosters increased genetic diversity and the e … post-mating isolation in hybrids. In addition to all these mechanisms, successful hybridization in fungi is ensured by cellular mechanisms like mitochondrial inheritance, transposable elements, and other genome conversion mechanisms. These mechanisms support hybrid life and enhance the virulence and pathogenicity of fungal hybrids, which provoke diseas …

More Than Meets the Eye: Unraveling the Interactions Between Skin Microbiota and Habitat in an Opportunistic Amphibian.

With amphibians still holding the record as the most threatened class of terrestrial vertebrates, their skin microbiota has been shown to play a relevant role in their survival in a fast-changing world. Yet little is known about how abiotic factors associated with different aquatic habitats impact these skin microorganisms. Here we chose the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata), a small anuran that colonizes a wide range of wetland habitats, to investigate how the diversity and composition of both its bacterial and fungal skin communities vary across different habitats and with water charac

Microorganisms in mosquitoes for controlling mosquito-borne viral diseases: from lab to field.

Mosquito-borne viral diseases pose a growing global health threat, with over half of the world's population living in high-risk areas. In the absence of effective vaccines or antiviral therapies for most mosquito-borne viruses, vector control remains the primary strategy. However, traditional insecticides face rising resistance and ecological concerns. Microbe-derived agents have emerged as promising, sustainable alternatives. This review summarizes advances in microbe-based control strategies, focusing on mechanisms of action, translational relevance, and field application. Particular attenti

Dual-function thiourea-linked benzothiazole derivative: sensitive fluorescent detection of Hg2+ and broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity.

A novel thiourea-linked benzothiazole derivative TH1 was synthesized and systematically characterized for its dual-functional application in sensing and antimicrobial activity. The compound exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ ions, with a clear fluorescence quenching ("turn-off") response upon binding due to formation of TH1-Hg(II) complex. The probe demonstrated a remarkably low detection limit of 0.019 ppm, making it suitable for trace-level mercury detection. Interference studies confirmed its high selectivity, and practical applicability was validated by testing blo
