The development and postnatal organization of primary afferent projections to the rat thoracic spinal cord.

Primary afferent projections to the thoracic spinal cord in fetal and postnatal rats were labelled by applying horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the central stumps of cut peripheral nerves. Diaminobenzidine (DAB) and tetramethyl benzidine (TMB) histochemical processing procedures were used to reveal the HRP reaction product. In postnatal rats, individual muscle nerves were labelled to reveal the organization of muscle afferent projections to the motor nuclei. The terminals of muscle afferents were distributed widely across the dendritic arbors of motoneurons supplying the same muscles. No spatia

Brain lipids of a still-born 28-week-old fetus from a pregnant woman with severe hydramnion.

Some of the total brain weighing 370 g of a 28-week-old fetus who had been still-born from a pregnant woman with severe hydramnion as used for the experiment. The fetal brain was dissected into the cortex and medulla of cerebral frontal, parietal and occipital lobes, and the cerebellum. Various lipids of them were analysed in detail. The total lipids constituted 2.1-2.8% of the tissue wet weight, respectively, in every portion of the fetal brain. The total cholesterol and total phospholipids constituted 19-25% and 72-80% of the total lipids, respectively, in it. Particularly, the fetal brain s

Evaluation of the periaqueductal central gray (PAG) as a morphine-specific locus of action and examination of morphine-induced and stimulation-produced analgesia at coincident PAG loci.

Experiments were carried out in rats to (1) elaborate upon the sepcificity of drug action in the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG), and (2) to evaluate the posible congruence of PAG sites of morphine-induced and stimulation-produced analgesis (SPA) applied at virtually identical PAG loci. It was demonstrated that the effect of morphine intracerebrally (i,c.) administered into the PAG was not duplicated by other centrally acting agents (chlorpromazine, chlordiazepoxide, pentobarbital or naloxone) administered i.c. at the same PAG site. This selective action of morphine in the PAG was further dem

Synthesis of Amyloid Images Using a Generative Adversarial Network from 2-Dimensional 18F-FDG Images and Evaluation for Clinical Use.

The use of amyloid PET to assess patient suitability of disease-modifying drugs for Alzheimer disease is increasing. This study aimed to synthesize amyloid PET images from 18F-FDG PET images using a generative artificial intelligence algorithm to reduce unnecessary amyloid PET scans. Methods: A 2-dimensional pix2pix algorithm was used. The algorithm was evaluated across 4 domains: image quality, voxel values, contrast between white and gray matter, and diagnostic performance for detecting the presence or absence of β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition. Pairs of 18F-FDG PET and amyloid PET images from 55

Hemimegalencephaly With Diffuse Cortical Malformation in a Child With Drug-Resistant Infantile Epileptic Spasms: A Case Report.

Hemimegalencephaly is a rare congenital malformation of cortical development involving hamartomatous overgrowth of part or all of one cerebral hemisphere. It commonly presents during infancy with early-onset, drug-resistant seizures, developmental impairment, and contralateral motor deficits. Infantile epileptic spasms may be an initial manifestation. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is central to diagnosis and surgical planning. We report the case of an 11-month-old boy with West syndrome and severe developmental delay whose epileptic spasms persisted despite treatment with vigabatrin,

Neuroinflammation and upregulation of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans in both brain and spinal cord after chronic ischemic stroke.

Ischemic stroke is caused by obstruction of a blood vessel reducing blood supply to a specific brain region and is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. The pathophysiology of ischemic brain damage involves the formation of glial scars that can further limit functional recovery. Inhibitory chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) are the major components of glial scars, but there is little information regarding their expression and distribution in either the damaged brain or, secondarily, in the more distant cervical spinal cord region after the chronic ischemic stroke. Here, we

Polioencephalomyelitis and neuronal necrosis caused by canine parvovirus-2a variant in free-ranging juvenile mountain lions (Puma concolor).

Canine parvovirus 2a (CPV-2a) causes severe enteritis and diarrhea in unvaccinated domestic puppies and wild mesocarnivores, such as raccoons (Procyon lotor). A retrospective and prospective study was conducted to characterize CPV-induced encephalomyelitis in mountain lions (Puma concolor) from California. Four free-ranging juvenile mountain lions were euthanized due to severe neurological signs. Microscopically, multifocal neuronal necrosis, lymphoplasmacytic perivascular cuffing, and gliosis were primarily observed in the gray matter of the brain and spinal cord in all the studied animals. Multiple sclerosis synaptic connectome: Insights from fluid biomarkers.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic immune-mediated and degenerative disease of the central nervous system. Increasing evidence highlights the role of brain network disconnection in the pathogenesis of clinical progression and irreversible disability accumulation in people with multiple sclerosis. Several pathologic changes contribute to multiple sclerosis-related disconnection, ranging from focal areas of demyelination and axonal transection to atrophy of both cortical and subcortical gray matter structures. In the last years, increasing evidence also suggests a prominent role of synaptic dysfunc

Abnormal B-Cell Exosome Proapoptotic and Antiapoptotic Cargo in Multiple Sclerosis: Potential Implication in Progressive Disease Biology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Compartmentalized CNS inflammation involving B cells is implicated in gray matter injury and disease progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). Products secreted by B cells of patients with MS can kill oligodendrocytes and neurons, a cytotoxicity conferred by their exosome-enriched extracellular vesicle (Ex En) fraction. METHODS: To explore the potential molecular mediators of this cytotoxicity, we profiled proteomic and transcriptomic cargo of Ex En isolated from B cells of patients with treatment-naive MS and matched healthy controls. RESULTS: MS B-cell-derived Ex E

Associations between cerebellum and major psychiatric disorders: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Despite its small size the cerebellum is an anatomically complex and functionally important part of the brain. Previous studies have demonstrated associations between characteristic features/anatomic anomalies of cerebellum and psychiatric disorders. However, the potential causal relationships are unknown. In this study, a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization approach was employed to investigate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) heritability and genetic causal associations between 77 imaging derived phenotypes (IDPs) of the cerebellum and major psychiatric disorder, including ma

High resolution multi-delay arterial spin labeling with self-supervised deep learning denoising for pediatric choroid plexus perfusion MRI.

Choroid plexus (CP) is an important brain structure that produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CP perfusion has been studied using multi-delay arterial spin labeling (MD-ASL) in adults but not in pediatric populations due to the challenge of small CP size in children. Here we present a high resolution (iso2 mm) MDASL protocol with 10-minute scan time and performed test-retest scans on 21 typically developing children aged 8 to 17 years. We further proposed a Transformer-based deep learning (DL) model with k-space weighted image average (KWIA) denoised images as reference for training the model.

Hippocampal Volumetric Changes in Astronauts Following a Mission in the International Space Station.

(1) Background: Evidence from non-human animal and spaceflight analog studies have suggested that traveling to outer space could have a significant impact on the structural properties of the hippocampus, a brain region within the medial temporal lobe that is critical for learning and memory. Here, we tested this hypothesis in a group of astronauts who participated in a six-month mission in the International Space Station (ISS). (2) Methods: We collected magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans from a sample of 17 (9 males, 8 females) astronauts before and after the ISS mission, and calculated pe

The hidden threat of cysticercosis: A neglected public health problem.

The parasitic infection known as cysticercosis is caused by the larvae of the Taenia solium (pork tapeworm). Cysticercosis is spread by food. Humans can serve as both definitive and intermediate hosts, whereas pigs serve as intermediate hosts. This illness is one of the neglected tropical diseases that affect the public health of people from low-income backgrounds. Cysticercosis is endemic to Africa, China, India, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. When humans consume pork that has been contaminated and cooked incorrectly, cysticerci enter the small intestine where they are evaginated by diges

Potential of ferroptosis and ferritinophagy in migraine pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential of ferroptosis and ferritinophagy in migraine pathogenesis. BACKGROUND: Ferroptosis and ferritinophagy are related to increased cellular iron concentration and have been associated with the pathogenesis of several neurological disorders, but their potential in migraine pathogenesis has not been explored. Increased iron deposits in some deep brain areas, mainly periaqueductal gray (PAG), are reported in migraine and they have been associated with the disease severity and chronification as well as poor response to antimigraine drugs. RESULTS: Iron deposits ma

Hypoperfusion of periaqueductal gray as an imaging biomarker in chronic migraine beyond diagnosis: A 3D pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling MR imaging.

BACKGROUND: The periaqueductal gray (PAG) is at the center of a powerful descending antinociceptive neuronal network, and is a key node in the descending pain regulatory system of pain. However, less is known about the altered perfusion of PAG in chronic migraine (CM). AIM: To measure the perfusion of PAG matter, an important structure in pain modulation, in CM with magnetic resonance (MR) perfusion without contrast administration. METHODS: Three-dimensional pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling (3D-PCASL) and brain structure imaging were performed in 13 patients with CM and 15 normal subj

Neural correlates of harm avoidance: a multimodal meta-analysis of brain structural and resting-state functional neuroimaging studies.

Harm avoidance (HA) is a Cloninger personality trait that describes behavioural inhibition to avoid aversive stimuli. It serves as a predisposing factor that contributes to the development of mental disorders such as anxiety and major depressive disorder. Neuroimaging research has identified some brain anatomical and functional correlates of HA, but reported findings are inconsistent. We therefore conducted a multimodal meta-analysis of whole-brain structural and resting-state functional neuroimaging studies to identify the most stable neural substrate of HA. Included were a total of 10 struct
