Impact of environmental factors and poverty on pregnancy outcomes.

Studies have indicated that various societal factors such as toxicant exposure, maternal habits, occupational hazards, psychosocial factors, socioeconomic status, racial disparity, chronic stress, and infection may impact pregnancy outcomes. These outcomes include spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, alterations in the development of the fetus, and long-term health of offspring. Although much is known about individual pregnancy outcomes, little is known about the associations between societal factors and pregnancy outcomes. This manuscript reviews some of the literature available on the effect

Exposure to airborne particulate matter in the ambient, indoor, and occupational environments.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter results in various adverse health effects. Unlike other pollutants, such as ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen, for which there is significant exposure, particulate matter exposure is much more complex because it is not a single chemical species or even a limited number of chemical species. Particulate matter includes various chemical species in particles having a wide range of diameters and shapes that have widely varying toxicities. People are exposed to particles in the ambient environment, in indoor spaces, and in the occu

Cumulative trauma disorders of the hand and wrist in the auto industry.

Surveillance for cumulative trauma disorders (CTDs) of the hand and wrist was carried out in five US automotive plants from 1985 to 1986, using Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Form 200 injury and illness logs and medical insurance claims. Results using both record sources indicated that hand and wrist disorders may be more common in foundries than in other types of automotive plants. Similarly, in assembly plants, employees in certain departments appeared to be at higher risk for CTDs. Although our results are based on small numbers of cases, they suggest plants and depart

Effects of repeated exposure to white noise on central cholinergic activity in the rat.

Acute (45 min) exposure to noise has been shown to decrease sodium-dependent high-affinity choline uptake activity in the frontal cortex and hippocampus of the rat. In the present experiment, the effects of repeated noise exposure on choline uptake in these two brain regions were studied. Rats were exposed to 100-dB white noise in ten 45-min sessions. Tolerance developed to the effects of noise on choline uptake. In addition, the effects were found to be classically conditionable to cues in the exposure environment. These data may have important implications in understanding the health hazard

Prescribed burn smoke and community health in the Ozark Mountains: A qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Prescribed burns sustain the fire-adapted forests of the Missouri Ozarks, and the smoke they generate carries respiratory and cardiovascular risks that fall unevenly across rural communities. Little evidence describes how these communities understand or respond to that smoke, leaving nurses in rural settings with limited guidance. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore how rural community leaders perceive the effects of prescribed burn smoke on community health and well-being in the Missouri Ozarks. METHODS: In this qualitative descriptive study, we conducted semi-struc
