Pure tone audiograms of 80 workmen with preexisting endogenous cochlear hearing loss were investigated over an average of 16 years (range 10 to 26) of occupational exposure to noise. Further hearing deterioration was moderate in the majority of cases more severe hearing losses more often affected the low tone range. The pure tone threshold 0.25 to 8 kHz remained unaltered in at least one ear in 24% of cases, in the high tone range 3 to 6 kHz in 51%. The average hearing loss was least at 3 kHz, followed by 4 kHz. Acute low-tone sensorineural hearing loss (ALHL) has the following three criteria; obscure origin, acute onset and sensorineural hearing loss limited to low frequencies. A 5 1/2-year-old Sephardic Jewish girl, born of consanguineous parents, is described. She has short stature, microcephaly, conductive hearing loss, skin mastocytosis and microtia. Since this constellation of findings has not been reported previously, we think that these findings represent a new congenital malformation, most probably of genetic etiology.

This paper presents an analysis of the relationship of the amount of hyalinization of the spiral ligament, secondary to cochlear otosclerosis (spongiosis), to the amount of hearing loss. This relationship was previously studied by Parahy and Linthicum. It was found that the larger the amount of hyalinization, the greater the hearing loss. This hyalinization is a measure of the amount of toxic enzymes being excreted into the inner ear fluid. These enzymes are suspected to affect the metabolic function of the hair cells.

Evoked-response forward-masking functions were measured by chronic electrodes in the inferior colliculus of the chinchilla before and after exposure to an intense tone that produced a permanent hearing loss. Before exposure, the forward-masking time constants ranged from 50 to 90 ms. The hearing conservation records of a large, multiple-facility printing company were obtained. The records were analyzed for factors associated with Standard Threshold Shift. These factors included hearing levels, employee age and sex, occupational and nonoccupational noise exposure histories, and medical history. The analysis revealed that statistically significant factors associated with Standard Threshold Shift were from medical and nonoccupational noise exposure histories, and not occupational noise exposure.

Sixteen patients with confirmed mass lesions of the posterior fossa and normal hearing sensitivity for pure tones were studied. Patients' main symptoms, auditory brain-stem response (ABR), and lesion size were analyzed. Significant hearing loss was found in about two-thirds of a series of 107 individuals with Down's syndrome. Hearing loss of that degree causes retardation of speech, language and intellectual development in normal children. Previously reported acoustic reflex threshold data from normal and hearing-impaired subjects indicate that the effect of stimulus bandwidth on reflex thresholds is altered by sensorineural hearing loss. It is this change in the "bandwidth effect" that forms the basis for predicting hearing loss from reflex threshold data.
