BACKGROUND: Traumatic rupture of the tibialis anterior (TA) tendon represents a very rare foot injury. A combined injury of both the TA and the extensor hallucis longus (EHL) tendons has not yet been reported. Within the scope of this work we will prove that tendon transfers in cases of combined tendon injuries are a reasonable course of action in order to achieve the aim of a functional reconstruction.

A retrospective assessment of labial sensory function following sagittal split osteotomy was undertaken by a combination of record analysis, postal questionnaire and objective sensory testing. Multiple noncontiguous fracture-subluxations of the cervical spine are fractures and subluxations separated by at least one normal intervening cervical vertebra. A review of all 66 consecutive cervical spine fractures treated by the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of Ottawa during 26 consecutive months revealed six such cases (9%). These injuries are more common than previously recognized. Special consideration is required in their treatment because of the presence of a mobile intermediate segment in some of these patients.

A technique for maxillary advancement at the Le Fort I level in cleft palate patients is described. A partial thickness palatal flap which leaves the greater palatine vessels in situ allows the maxilla to be repositioned anteriorly without displacing the soft palate. This common fracture most frequently affects young males. In most cases, the fracture is found on initial examination. Occasionally, it is missed on the initial radiographic evaluation but becomes apparent on follow-up films. Although most scaphoid fractures respond to conservative therapy, some fail to heal. Nonunion of the scaphoid may respond to various nonoperative and operative techniques. In such cases, consultation with a hand surgeon is useful.

The mechanism of injury and long-term effects in three cases suggest that a specific type of intercondylar injury of the femur, i.e., cleavage fracture, is caused by force transmitted through the patella. A relatively great number of supination abduction fractures did not need surgical treatment because displacement was not present. Significantly better results occurred with operative intervention in supination--eversion and pronation--eversion ankle fractures. Supination--abduction and supination--eversion ankle fractures are best treated by open reduction, anatomical restoration and stabilization of the fractures.

Traumatic dislocations of the sternoclavicular joint may be anterosternal or retrosternal. Anterior dislocation is due to forces which retract and depress the clavicle. Posterior dislocation is due to either direct force on the medial end of the clavicle or to a force acting on the posterolateral aspect of the shoulder. From 1950 to 1974 we treated 16 patients with traumatic complete sternoclavicular dislocations. Twelve patients were followed and their cases are discussed. Treatment may be closed or open.
