Each individual isoform of the dopamine D2 receptor protects from lactotroph hyperplasia.

Dopamine acting through D2 receptors (D2Rs) controls lactotroph proliferation and prolactin (PRL) levels. Ablation of this receptor in mice results in lactotroph hyperplasia and prolactinomas in aged females. Alternative splicing of the Drd2 gene generates 2 independent isoforms, a long (D2L) and a short (D2S) isoform, which are present in all D2R-expressing cells. Here, we addressed the role of D2L and D2S on lactotroph physiology through the generation and analysis of D2S-null mice and their comparison with D2L-null animals. These mice represent a valuable tool with which to investigate dopa

Individual EEG differences in affective valence processing in women with low and high neuroticism.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, individual differences in brain electrophysiology during positive and negative affective valence processing in women with different neuroticism scores are quantified. METHODS: Twenty-six women scoring high and low on neuroticism participated on this experiment. A support vector machine (SVM)-based classifier was applied on the EEG single trials elicited by high arousal pictures with negative and positive valence scores. Based on the accuracy values obtained from subject identification tasks, the most distinguishing EEG channels among participants were detected, point

Individual variability in location impacts orthographic selectivity in the "visual word form area".

Strong evidence exists for a key role of the human ventral occipitotemporal cortex (vOT) in reading, yet there have been conflicting reports about the specificity of this area in orthographic versus nonorthographic processing. We suggest that the inconsistencies in the literature can be explained by the method used to identify regions that respond to words. Here we provide evidence that the "visual word form area" (VWFA) shows word selectivity when identified at the individual subject level, but that intersubject variability in the location and size of the VWFA causes this selectivity to be wa

Operation of a brain-computer interface walking simulator for individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) can leave the affected individuals with paraparesis or paraplegia, thus rendering them unable to ambulate. Since there are currently no restorative treatments for this population, novel approaches such as brain-controlled prostheses have been sought. Our recent studies show that a brain-computer interface (BCI) can be used to control ambulation within a virtual reality environment (VRE), suggesting that a BCI-controlled lower extremity prosthesis for ambulation may be feasible. However, the operability of our BCI has not yet been tested in a SCI population.

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in HIV-infected individuals and their relationship with immune status.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intestinal parasitic infection is a common entity in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These infections may lead to fatal complications in the immuno suppressed individuals. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in HIV sero-positive patients and their relationship with the immune status of individuals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fecal samples from 100 HIV sero-positive and an equal number of HIV sero-negative individuals were collected and examined for enteric parasites by direct microsco

Prevalence of calcified carotid artery atheromas on panoramic images of individuals with primary hyperparathyroidism.

OBJECTIVES: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), affecting 1% of the population, is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The presence of calcified carotid artery plaque (CCAP) on panoramic images is a validated risk indicator of future adverse cardiovascular events. We hypothesized that military veterans aged 50 years or older diagnosed with PHPT by increased parathyroid hormone and calcium levels would frequently have CCAP on their images. METHODS: We determined the prevalence rates of CCAP on the images of patients diagnosed with PHPT and evaluated their atheroge

Knowledge, attitude, and practices of individuals to prevent and manage metabolic syndrome in an Indian setting.

BACKGROUND: Patients' knowledge, attitudes, and behavior play a large role in preventing and managing the risk factors making up metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS is associated with increased morbidity and mortality per the World Health Organization criteria. The objective of the study was to examine the current health literacy levels, risk perceptions about MetS, and associated management challenges in diverse Indian settings. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed during the period of April-May 2012 by enrolling 125 individuals at risk of MetS from urban, rural, and sl

Pituitary incidentalomas: application of an evidence-based approach at the individual patient and population levels.

With the widespread use of imaging techniques, incidental discovery of clinically unsuspected pituitary adenomas is increasing in frequency and will increase further. The Endocrine Society Task Force on Pituitary Incidentalomas has developed practice guidelines which reflect the best available evidence combined with the opinions of experts in pituitary diseases. For incidental macroadenomas, evidence supporting comprehensive evaluation (for hyperfunction, hypopituitarism and anatomy) and management (whether surgical or careful follow-up) is strong. By contrast, evidence supporting approaches t

Weighing the stigma of weight: An fMRI study of neural reactivity to the pain of obese individuals.

Explicit negative attitudes and blameful beliefs (e.g. poor diet, laziness) towards obese individuals are well documented and are pervasive even among health professionals. Here we sought to determine whether obesity stigma is reflected in a fundamental feature of intersubjectivity namely the automatic neural resonance with others' affective experiences. During fMRI, normal-weight female participants observed short clips depicting normal-weight (NW) and obese (Ob) models experiencing pain. Importantly, participants believed that half of the Ob were overweight due to a hormonal disorder (HormOb

Sensitization via healthy skin programs Th2 responses in individuals with atopic dermatitis.

Allergen-specific responses in atopic dermatitis (AD) are skewed toward a Th2 profile. However, individuals with AD have been shown to make effective virus-specific Th1 responses, raising the possibility that the skin itself contributes to driving the AD Th2 immunophenotype. Therefore, to explore the programming of immunological sensitization by the skin, we examined the outcome of sensitization through non-lesional skin of individuals with AD and healthy controls. Volunteers (controls, AD individuals with filaggrin gene (FLG) mutations (ADFM), and AD individuals without FLG mutations (ADWT))

Airway inflammatory markers in individuals with cystic fibrosis and non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis.

Bronchiectasis is an airway disease characterized by thickening of the bronchial wall, chronic inflammation , and destruction of affected bronchi. Underlying etiologies include severe pulmonary infection and cystic fibrosis (CF); however, in a substantial number of patients with non-CF-related bronchiectasis (NCFB), no cause is found. The increasing armamentarium of therapies now available to combat disease in CF is in stark contrast to the limited tools employed in NCFB. Our study aimed to evaluate similarities and differences in airway inflammatory markers in patients with NCFB and CF, and t

Musculoskeletal physical outcome measures in individuals with tension-type headache: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with tension-type headache (TTH), in addition to headache pain, typically suffer from pericranial muscle tenderness and increased cervical muscle tone. Physical and physiological outcomes related to musculoskeletal function, however, are not commonly assessed in clinical studies and not systematically proposed as outcome measures in headache-related practice guidelines. OBJECTIVES: To review which musculoskeletal outcomes are used in the clinical assessment of patients with TTH and which are associated with headache pain and related dysfunction. METHODS: Literature

Risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma among individuals born preterm or small for gestational age.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux is a main risk factor for oesophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Infants born preterm or small for gestational age (SGA) regurgitate more than infants born at term, and some data support the hypothesis of an association with oesophagitis, Barrett's oesophagus and EAC. This study aimed to assess the association between risk of EAC and preterm or SGA birth. METHODS: In this population-based case-control study, all incident cases of EAC in Sweden between 1st January 1998 and 31st December 2004 with retrievable birth records were eligible as cases. We sampled three

Alcohol induces sensitization to gluten in genetically susceptible individuals: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of cerebellar degeneration attributed to prolonged and excessive alcohol intake remain unclear. Additional or even alternative causes of cerebellar degeneration are often overlooked in suspected cases of alcohol-related ataxia. The objectives of this study were two fold: (1) to investigate the prevalence of gluten-related serological markers in patients with alcohol-related ataxia and; (2) to compare the pattern of brain involvement on magnetic resonance imaging between patients with alcohol and gluten ataxias. MATERIALS & METHODS: Patients diagnosed with alcohol an

The role of causal and intentional judgments in moral reasoning in individuals with high functioning autism.

In the present study, we investigated the ability to assign moral responsibility and punishment in adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome (HFA/AS), using non-verbal cartoons depicting an aggression, an accidental harm or a mere coincidence. Participants were asked to evaluate the agent's causal and intentional roles, his responsibility and the punishment he deserves for his action. Adults with HFA/AS did not differ in judgments of suffering and causality from adults with typical development. However, subtle difficulties with judgments of intentional action and moral judgments

Predictors of a clinical high risk status among individuals with a family history of psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Risk for psychosis can be assessed on the basis of genetic risk, referred to in the literature as family high risk (FHR) or through the presence of clinical high risk symptoms (CHR). Recent studies have also shown that certain risk factors (i.e. trauma, cannabis, migration) may play a role in the development of psychosis, possibly in combination with one another and in particular in combination with a family history of psychosis. It is unknown which risk factors may play a role in the prediction of CHR status among individuals whom are already genetically vulnerable. This study com

Disseminated cutaneous tuberculosis: an atypical presentation of reinfection (secondary) tuberculosis in an immunocompetent individual.

An atypical case of disseminated cutaneous tuberculosis in a young immunocompetent woman is presented. Salient recount of the natural history, clinical connotation, histopathological features, and the relevant laboratory details are described. The role of relative and absolute criteria is emphasized. In the event of inconclusive specific tests, the significance of histopathology and empirical antitubercular therapy as an adjunct diagnostic tool is highlighted.

Individual differences in personality profiles among potential living kidney transplant donors.

BACKGROUND: Although the psychological assessment of potential living kidney donors (PLKD) is part of the recommendations for action for any transplant coordination, there are not many studies that provide data about the importance of selecting donors for improving transplant outcomes. This work aims to raise awareness of potential kidney donors by designing methods for early detection of potential problems after the transplant, as well as by selecting the most suitable donors. METHODS: This is a study of 25 PLKD drawn from the General University Hospital of Alicante. Participants completed t

Perception of access to health care by homeless individuals seeking services at a day shelter.

Homeless individuals experience significant physical, mental health and substance abuse issues. This study describes the prevalence of health issues and perceptions of access to care among 300 homeless individuals who use a day shelter. Approximately 43% described a serious/chronic physical health problem, 53% a serious mental health problem, and 49% a substance use disorder. Those reporting a serious problem were more likely to have insurance and to report greater perceived access to care but perceived access to care was less than expected. Having insurance was also related to longer duration
