Profile of maternal and foetal complications during labour and delivery among women giving birth in hospitals in Matlab and Chandpur, Bangladesh.

Worldwide, for an estimated 358,000 women, pregnancy and childbirth end in death and mourning, and beyond these maternal deaths, 9-10% of pregnant women or about 14 million women per year suffer from acute maternal complications. This paper documents the types and severity of maternal and foetal complications among women who gave birth in hospitals in Matlab and Chandpur, Bangladesh, during 2007-2008. The Community Health Research Workers (CHRWs) of the icddr,b service area in Matlab prospectively collected data for the study from 4,817 women on their places of delivery and pregnancy outcomes.

Evaluation of a primary health care programme in The Gambia. I. The impact of trained traditional birth attendants on the outcome of pregnancy.

In 1983 a primary health care (PHC) programme was introduced into the Farafenni area of The Gambia; an important component of this programme was the identification and training of a traditional birth attendant (TBA) in each village with a population of 400 or greater. The outcome of pregnancy has been documented among women resident in 15 villages which joined the PHC programme and in 26 which were too small to do so, for 1 year before and for 3 years after the start of the programme. In PHC villages 65% of women were assisted at delivery by a trained TBA during the post-implementation period

The Impact of Donating Human Milk on the Health of the Donor and Their Infant: Evidence from Two Systematic Reviews.

Using human milk has been associated with decreased morbidity and mortality in preterm/low birth weight infants. Donor human milk is recommended when maternal milk is unavailable. The benefits of donor human milk for the recipient are well documented, but the impact of donation on donors and their infants is not clear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of donation human milk on donors and their infants. Literature searches were conducted (April 2024) to identify studies (observational, quasi-experimental, and randomized control trials) assessing the impact of human milk donation on donor health

Feasibility of implementing the World Health Organization case management guideline for possible serious bacterial infection among young infants in Ntcheu district, Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is a leading cause of mortality, yet the recommended inpatient treatment options are inaccessible to most families in low-income settings. In 2015, the World Health Organization released a guideline for outpatient treatment of young infants (0-59 days of age) with possible serious bacterial infection (PSBI) with simplified antibiotic regimens when referral was not feasible. If implemented widely, this guideline could prevent many deaths. Our implementation research evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of implementing the WHO guideline through the existing hea

Early Inhaled Budesonide for the Prevention of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: Systemic glucocorticoids reduce the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia among extremely preterm infants, but they may compromise brain development. The effects of inhaled glucocorticoids on outcomes in these infants are unclear. METHODS: We randomly assigned 863 infants (gestational age, 23 weeks 0 days to 27 weeks 6 days) to early (within 24 hours after birth) inhaled budesonide or placebo until they no longer required oxygen and positive-pressure support or until they reached a postmenstrual age of 32 weeks 0 days. The primary outcome was death or bronchopulmonary dysplasia,

Maternal Characteristics and Prevalence of Infants Born Small for Gestational Age.

IMPORTANCE: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) is a risk factor for neonatal mortality and adverse outcomes in the short and long term. The maternal profile in China has substantially changed over the past decade, which may affect the risk of infants born SGA. OBJECTIVES: To analyze the prevalence of infants born SGA from 2012 through 2020 and explore the association of maternal sociodemographic characteristics and other factors with that prevalence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study examined data from the National Maternal Near Miss Surveillance System on

Role of hsa‑miR‑105 during the pathogenesis of paclitaxel resistance and its clinical implication in ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Low birth weight (LBW) is a leading risk factor for infant morbidity and mortality in the United States. There are large disparities in the prevalence of LBW by race and ethnicity, especially between African American and White women. Despite extensive research, the practice of clinical and public health, and policies devoted to reducing the number of LBW infants, the prevalence of LBW has remained unacceptably and consistently high. There have been few detailed studies identifying the factors associated with LBW in California, which is home to a highly diverse population. The aim o

Budesonide and Surfactant Therapy Versus Surfactant Alone on Incidence of Lung Disease in Preterm Infants (BEST Lung): Study Protocol for a Systematic Review and Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis With Nested Prospective Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Combining surfactant with budesonide has been proposed to prevent BPD, but results from existing randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are conflicting. Individual participant data meta-analysis (IPD-MA) synthesises raw trial data, increasing precision, improving assessment of data quality and enabling subgroup analyses. This IPD-MA aims to examine the effect of surfactant plus budesonide versus surfactant alone. METHODS: We will systematically search medical databases and trial regis

The development of multiorgan dysfunction in CDH-ECMO neonates is associated with the level of pre-ECMO support.

PURPOSE: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is the most common indication for neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), but mortality remains at 50%. Multiorgan failure can occur in 25% and has been linked to worse outcomes. We sought to examine the factors that would increase the risk of multiorgan dysfunction (MOD). METHODS: The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) database was used to identify infants with CDH (2000-2015). The primary outcome was MOD, which was defined as the presence of organ failure in ≥2 organ systems. We used a multivariable logistic regression

A Review of Oxygen Use During Chest Compressions in Newborns-A Meta-Analysis of Animal Data.

Background: International consensus statements for resuscitation of newborn infants recommend provision of 100% oxygen once chest compressions are required. However, 100% oxygen exacerbates reperfusion injury and reduces cerebral perfusion in newborn babies. Objective: We aimed to establish whether resuscitation with air during chest compression is feasible and safe in newborn infants compared with 100% oxygen. Methods: Systematic search of PubMed, Google Scholar and CINAHL for articles examining variable oxygen concentrations during chest compressions in term newborns. Results: Overall, no hu
