Argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) was performed on 60 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma and 59 eyes with capsular (pseudoexfoliation) glaucoma. Laser applications of four different power levels (500, 600, 700, and 800 mW) were directed either at the anterior trabecular meshwork or at the posterior trabecular meshwork. Gonioscopic examination to reveal peripheral anterior synechiae (PAS) formation was performed before and six months after ALT. Peripheral anterior synechiae were found in 26 (22%) of the eyes. The records of 74 patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma were reviewed. Cataract formation in 103 eyes treated with argon laser were compared with eyes in an age- and sex-matched, randomly-selected control group to determine whether cataract formation was hastened by laser iridotomy. Ocular inflammation was induced by intravitreal bovine serum albumin (BSA) injection in one eye of each of six cynomolgus monkeys. The fellow eyes were injected with sterile saline alone. The intraocular pressure decreased by 12.2 +/- 1.3 mmHg (mean +/- SE) 2 days after BSA injection and 4.0 +/- 1.1 mmHg after saline injection. After removal of the supper cervical sympathetic ganglion in cats followed by increase of the intraocular pressure from 20 to 32 mm Hg, the outflow of intraocular fluid was sharply enhanced due to lowering tone of tissues of the eye drainage apparatus in the desympathised eye. Noradrenaline was found to reduce sharply by the 4th-5th day in the desympathised eye's tissues due to degenerative processes whereas accumulation of noradrenaline by the 6th-8th day occurred on account of humoral factors.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) inoculated directly into the anterior chamber of the mouse eye induced an acute inflammatory process in both the injected eye and its uninjected (contralateral) counterpart. The histological features of cystoid macular edema in an early stage are demonstrated in the eye of a 54-year-old patient with an active ciliary body melanoma. Separation of the posterior vitreous face and the inner limiting membrane with accumulation of an exudate in the resulting space, petaloid folding of the inner retinal layers, swelling as well as microcystoid degeneration of Henle's fiber layer, and vertical folding of the outer retinal layers with separation of the central cones from the pigment epithelium are observed.

Nanophthalmos is a rare and blinding disease. Diagnostic features include a small eye, small cornea, shallow anterior chamber, narrow angle, high lens/eye volume ratio, and uveal effusion. Several members of two families with Rieger's anomaly were found to have signs of hydrophthalmia (enlarged corneas, Descemet ruptures, optic disc damage). Two of them revealed normal intraocular pressures during later life without medical or operative treatment. Obviously a spontaneous pressure regulation had occurred. A delayed differentiation of the trabecular meshwork is possibly the cause of self-regulation in these two cases of Rieger's anomaly as in case with congenital glaucoma.

The camel eye shows some distinct features such as a pigmented peripheral cornea, a remarkably thickened Descement membrane, and endothelial-lined pectinate ligament, a cleft ciliary body, long ciliary processes, a horizontally oval pupil with well-developed corpora nigra and a holangiotic retina. Some of these are characteristic of horses, cattle and sheep, whereas others are more commonly found in lower mammals such as the rabbit. The reason for this staggered evolution in the development of the camel eye remains obscure.

A report on results of 186 32P tests is given. Radiation increases of more than 30%, compared with tumor-free areas, were considered as positive. 95 eyes were histologically examined. The 32P test gave 90 correct positive answers and 1 correct negative answer. Faulty positive results were found in 2 cases; faulty negative results were also found in 2 cases. This means that the diagnosis was correct in 95%. The literature is discussed concerning reliability and methods. The dangers of the use of 32P are stressed, and the development of noninvasive nuclear-medical diagnostic methods is suggested

The structure of gap junctions in the rabbit ciliary epithelium, corneal endothelium, and mouse stomach and liver was studied with the freeze-fracturing technique after rapid freezing to near 4 degrees K from the living state. In the ciliary epithelium, the connexons were randomly distributed, separated by smooth membrane matrix.
