The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for amplification of genomic fragments of spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae directly from field samples of ticks, tick ova, tick larvae, tick faeces and organs of wild mice was employed for the first time in P.R. of China. Two repeated sequences, plasmids pOV8 and pOV26, were cloned and characterized from the filarial parasite Onchocerca volvulus. We report the rare finding of Strongyloides stercoralis rhabditiform larvae in biliary fluid, here associated with cholecystitis and near total portal vein thrombosis. The role of S. stercoralis leading to atypical clinical presentations and difficulty diagnosing strongyloidiasis in such patients with appropriate geographic exposure is discussed.

This article illustrates a case of S stercoralis. This organism causes the disease strongyloidasis. Strongyloidasis is defined by acute manifestation, autoreinfection, or hyperinfection. It is contracted by skin penetration of the filariform larvae in the soil. Diagnosis and effective treatment is dependent on identification through special techniques with stool samples in the clinical laboratory.

We report the first case of a patient with malignancy (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) and infection of the subcutis and muscles of the hand and forearm. Lytic lesions of the skull due to cysticercosis are described. Encysted larvae in the subarachnoid space eroded the inner table of the skull in a 10-year-old Guatemalan male. In an area with endemic cysticercosis infections, this diagnosis should be considered when round, lytic defects are demonstrated in a skull radiograph.

The prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis is measured by means of stool examinations. Larvae of S. stercoralis are seen in 9.8% of the specimens, eggs of A. lumbricoides in 51.4%, eggs of T. trichiura in 85.2% and eggs of N. americanus in 64.1%. Strongyloidiasis occurs in foci and affects 16.8% of the inhabitants in one of the studied villages.

The authors report two observations of cysticercosis in two pigs breeders living in the western part of Cameroon. Microscopic observation of several pieces demonstrated the presence of cysticercs larvae of Taenia solium. Treatment by praziquantel (Biltricide) was followed by an increase of antibodies rate, but it was not possible to appreciate the effectiveness of this therapy.
