Perinatal factors associated with early deaths of preterm infants born in Brazilian Network on Neonatal Research centers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate perinatal factors associated with early neonatal death in preterm infants with birth weights (BW) of 400-1,500 g. ME … ted with the early deaths were identified by stepwise logistic regression. RESULTS: A total of 579 live births met the inclusion criteria. Early deaths occurred in 92 (16%) cases, varying between centers from 5 to 31%, and these differences persisted after controlling for newborn illness severity and mortality risk score (SNAPPE-II). According to the multiv …

Integrating psychotherapy with obstetrics and gynaecology.

As a specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology I then became a specialist also in psychotherapy, including: psychodynamic therapy, group therapy, hypnotherapy, and body-therapy. In the last nineteen years I have been working to integrate the medical and psychotherapeutic approach, including attention to psychosocial factors. After some years, I found our German rate of premature birth to be 7%. This amazed me because prematurity very rarely occurred in my patients, which was down to about 1%. In France they did some surveys and studies. By informing the mothers how to live, and reducing smoking an

Causes of death in neonates born with a heart malformation.

All deceased infants were autopsied in a territory with a population of 1 220 000 inhabitants and a mean of 17 410 live births a year. During a period of 25 years (which preceded the introduction of advanced neonatal cardiac surgery), 393 neonates (6% of all deceased neonates) had died in whom a congenital heart malformation was found at autopsy. 118 (30%) of deaths were due to noncardiac causes. Lethal congenital noncardiac malformations caused death in 38 (10%) neonates. A perinatal disease (including birth trauma) was the cause in 65 (16%) neonates. An association of a noncardiac congenital…

Predicting the chances of having a baby with or without treatment at different time points in couples with unexplained subfertility.

STUDY QUESTION: Can we develop a prediction model that can estimate the chances of conception leading to live birth with and without treatment at different points in time in couples with unexplained subfertility? SUMMARY ANSWER: Yes, a dynamic model was developed that predicted the probability of conceiving under expectant management and following active treatments (in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intrauterine insemination with ovarian stimulation (IUI + SO), clomiphene) at different points in time since diagnosis. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Couples with no identified cause for their subfertility …

Reclaiming Indigenous birth: research framework to assess the economic costs and outcomes of obstetric evacuation and experiences of Indigenous midwifery in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous communities in Canada (First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples) have distinct traditional knowledge and practices for pregnancy and birth, and these have sustained healthy and thriving Indigenous communities for millennia. Indigenous midwives historically held a leading role as primary providers of sexual and reproductive healthcare. However, colonial practices severely disrupted the role of Indigenous midwives and the transfer of their knowledge from generation to generation. The obstetric evacuation policy in Canada requires people who live in rural and remote location

Maternal and fetal risk factors for congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract: a birth cohort study in urban China.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are among the most common causes of kidney diseases in children. Previous studies on CAKUT etiologies have been predominantly focused on non-modifiable genetic risk factors. The existing nongenetic studies are limited by lack of comprehensive investigation of potentially modifiable risk factors and the inability to distinguish among various phenotypes of CAKUT. Therefore, this study aimed to comprehensively evaluate both maternal and fetal risk factors of CAKUT, sorted by disease phenotype. METHODS: A prospective birth c
