The major ferritin species of mouse liver has been resolved by SDS-PAGE into two bands similar to the H and L subunits of rat liver ferritin with the L subunit predominating. Amino acid sequencing has confirmed the major, faster-migrating component as L chain. An additional, electrophoretically fast, minor ferritin was isolated from siderosome-containing subcellular fractions. In denaturing gels it gave a single 'F' subunit band of about 17 kDa, significantly smaller than the L and H subunits (about 20 and 21 kDa respectively). A distinct syndrome in infantile hemangioendothelioma consist of high-output congestive heart failure, hepatomegaly and cutaneous hemangiomas. Early therapy aimed at reduction of the shunt is essential if life is to be saved once cardiac failure becomes manifest. We report a case of infantile hemangioendothelioma with massive A-V and P-V shunt successfully treated by transcatheter embolization.

Case records have been analyzed for 92 patients with primary cancer of the liver. The discrepancies between the clinical and postmortem diagnosis reached 31%. It appeared that the exact diagnosis depended on valid evaluation of the disease history, clinical signs and findings at special examinations rather than on the number of investigations. We have reported a case of subcapsular hematoma of the liver, diagnosed and observed by ultrasonography, in association with the HELLP syndrome. The patient's condition improved with conservative management, but the hematoma was clearly shown to last for more than 12 weeks, which shows the need for extended postpartum follow-up and appropriate patient consultation.

Twenty-three hepatic resections were performed over a period of four years with the use of a Lin liver clamp and an operative mortality rate of 17.3%. Indications for liver resections were: five primary liver malignancies, four metastatic liver tumors and 14 benign liver diseases. All of the 14 patients with benign diseases survived the operation without developing late symptoms or complications. The diagnosis of gallbladder and liver diseases depends primarily on noninvasive techniques (ultrasound and computer tomogram). Gallstones can be detected by ultrasonography in more than 90% of such patients and this is a sufficient indication for operation. Advanced chronic renal failure has been thought of as a contraindication to liver transplantation. We present here seven cases of simultaneous kidney-liver transplant performed for combined end-organ failure. Six of the seven patients are alive with functioning grafts with follow-up of from 6 weeks to 32 months. In one case, the patient chronically rejected his liver graft (treated with successful retransplant) while maintaining good function in his kidney. We present the results of light and electron microscopy studies of the liver in an 8-year-old girl with congenital total lipodystrophy. Liver histology revealed cirrhosis, and ultrastructural study showed mitochondrial abnormalities and an increase in the number of peroxisomes. A potential relationship between the high fatty acid concentration in the serum and the peroxisomal proliferation is considered.

A young man presented with combative psychosis and elevated levels of plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). A solitary vascular pancreatic mass and diffuse vascular hepatic nodules were demonstrated on selective splenic and hepatic arteriograms. These classic angiographic findings are used to emphasize the role of angiography in initial radiographic evaluation and to summarize the angiographic appearance of functioning pancreatic adenomas. Even though this is an aggressive tumor, early diagnosis and intensive treatment may allow prolonged remission, if not cure.

We describe the appearance on MR of hydatid disease of the liver in 2 patients. The lesions were well demonstrated using spin-echo pulse sequences, and could be easily seen with either T1 or T2 weighting; however, maximum information was obtained using both. In these 2 cases, a thin, low signal boundary was noted around the cysts; this finding may prove useful in differential diagnosis.
