Atrophic maxillary floor augmentation by mineralized human bone allograft in sinuses of different size: an histologic and histomorphometric analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this work were to histologically examine the healing of mineralized human bone allograft (MHBA) in sinus augmentation for elevating a severe maxillary atrophy ridge (≤2 mm residual ridge height) and to correlate the results to the sinus cavity size. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A two-stage protocol was conducted in 23 patients, all having crestal bone ≤2 mm. A mixture of 80/20 cortical/cancellous of MHBA particles was used to augment sinus using the lateral window approach in narrow (NS; <15 mm bucco-palatal distance) and wide (WS; ≥15 mm bucco-palatal distance) sinuses, based

Technique for Foreign-Body Removal with the Use of Transnasal Endoscopic Prelacrimal Approach - A Case Report.

THE RATIONALE: Foreign body (FB) in the nasal cavities is a frequent cause of otolaryngology emergency consultation that sometimes requires surgical treatment. When there is involvement of the posterolateral wall of the maxillary sinus (MS) and of the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF), conventional techniques such as antrostomy and medial endoscopic maxillectomy may not allow sufficient domination of the surgical field. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a woman who suffered from intranasal trauma with epistaxis and pain. DIAGNOSIS: A computed tomography scan revealed a metallic FB at the lev…

Vertebral fracture and splenomegaly in a head and neck cancer producing granulocyte colony-stimulating factor: A case report of systemic complications associated with a cytokine-producing solid tumor.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing tumors are rare and are associated with a poor prognosis when they occur in the lungs and the head and neck region. Positron emission tomography/computed tomography has been reported to show systemic specific accumulation of fluorodeoxyglucose in these cases, but the systemic complications associated with the cytokines produced are not well known. We herein present the case of a G-CSF-producing maxillary sinus squamous cell carcinoma in a 73-year-old Japanese woman with a vertebral fracture and splenomegaly. These findings are known sever…

A Rare Cause of Intranasal Mass: Bilateral Ectopic Nasal Teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic teeth occur in a wide variety of sites, including the maxillary sinus, mandibular condyle, coronoid process, orbital, and nasal cavities. Reported symptoms and signs associated with nasal teeth include facial pain, external nasal deformities, foul-smelling rhinorrhea, recurrent epistaxis, and oronasal fistula. Ectopic teeth occurring bilaterally in the nasal cavity is very very rare. CASE REPORT: A bilateral intranasal ectopic teeth case, which is asymptomatic on the right side and symptomatic on the left side, is presented. The tooth on left side was extracted endoscopi…

A rare coexistence of aspergillosis with actinomycosis.

Aspergillosis is a common systemic mycosis which affects immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. Aspergillus spp. is wide spread in the environment in most countries, which renders an invasive form of disease. The presence conidial heads are pathognomic to aspergillosis in diagnosis. Actinomycosis is a subacute-to-chronic infection that causes sinus fistula, tract or abscess due to the invasion surrounding the soft tissue. Cervicofacial infection accounts for 50%-60% of all actinomycosis cases. The mandible and nasopharynx are the sites of predilection, but maxillary infection is rare. As

Mucormycosis in a patient with AIDS receiving systemic steroids.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection with a high mortality rate. Although mucormycosis is relatively rare, recent studies sugge … ug use. The patient developed acute onset of proptosis, vision loss, and invasive Mucor in the left maxillary sinus that extended along the optic nerve intracranially. Despite aggressive treatment, the patient died. Physicians should be aware of steroid-induced diabetes as a risk factor for invasive fungal infections such as mucormycosis.

High-pressure grease injury of the face.

We describe a rare case of high-pressure grease injury of the face in a 48-year-old man with severe facial edema, soft palate swelling, and bleeding from the nose and mouth. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) revealed multiple low-density areas in nasal cavity, subcutaneous tissue of the cheek, soft palate, right maxillary sinus, and right infratemporal fossa. The patient complained of a dyspnea feeling, and immediate tracheostomy was performed. The grease was removed by the Caldwell-Luc incision approach but was partially left in the infratemporal fossa. After the operation, the patient st…

Erythromycin stearate in acute maxillary sinusitis.

76 patients with acute maxillary sinusitis were treated with oral erythromycin stearate (500 mg twice or 3 times a day for 10 days). The mean concentration of erythromycin in the sinus secretion after 3-5 days' treatment was 0.6 mug/ml with the lower dosage and 1.3 mug/ml with the higher. The concentration of erythromycin in the sinus secretion was, on the average, 10-20 times higher than the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for group A streptococci and pneumococci, and reached MIC values for 15-30% of 100 examined strains of Haemophilus influenzae. 81% of the patients given the smaller …
